Great concept but let's see how the grate holds up, May 5, 2006
This review is from: DeLonghi Healthy Indoor Grill with Cast Iron Grill Plate
I received one of these for my birthday, and was very excited as I had been eyeing it for awhile. The first meal I prepared on it was steak, and it did a decent job. There's an adjustable thermostat which is really helpful in controlling the cooking.
The steaks turned out with a nice finish -- the design of the grate means you get those nice cross-hatch marks on the food if you flip it a few times.
But -- and here's the issue -- the grate may be made of cast-iron, but the teflon coating must be applied with an old paintbrush. After one use and a subsequent cleaning in the dishwasher, the teflon coating started to peel off in large flakes. At first I thought it was residual steak pieces, but the bacon I attempted to cook on it became covered with flakes!
I have contacted DeLonghi about the grate and am awaiting a new one. I'll stick to washing it in the sink and see if it holds up any better.

Exactly what I wanted!!, September 26, 2009
This review is from: DeLonghi Healthy Indoor Grill with Cast Iron Grill Plate
I bought this little gem from Crate and Barrel and after the first use I could tell it was going to be perfect. I live in an apartment, so I had to settle for an electric grill, and I chose this one because of the cast iron plate. I have been thoroughly unimpressed by other electric grills not heating evenly, like with a George Foreman, I feel like I'm constantly rotating the food because food closer to the hinge cooks faster with the lid closed. The first thing I cooked was some good old hickory-smoked sausage, and it turned out way better than expected. I also didn't have to mess with it as much. About 6 minutes on one side, 6 minutes on the other, voila. Had perfect grill marks, was done through and through. Love the ability to adjust the temperature settings (Off, Low, Medium, High). The fact that the plate AND tray below are removable is great too.
As for cleaning: This IS a cast iron grill. It even says on the box to wash with care by hand washing. Be sure that you are aware of proper cast iron cleaning techniques, such as seasoning, not using soap, etc. If you don't know how, don't let that deter you from buying such an awesome grill, let Google be your friend. This is not the grill for a person who just wants to be able to throw the plate in the dishwasher. That said, the removable pan that catches crumbs and dripping grease IS dishwasher safe.
All in all, by far a great product especially for someone who is constrained to using only electric.
