Just got this unit. Slim design, good rollers, handy cord storage.
HEAVY UNIT and appears quality made.
I followed the instructions but went a step further when it said to RUN IT ON THE HIGHEST SETTING FOR 2 HOURS in a WELL VENTILATED AREA. I put mine outside and let it run for 2.5 hours......full blast. Glad I did. Even so, when I put it in the basement and turned it on.....there was still a faint odor....not really objectionable.....but like something's burning or is "hot".
I like the handy on / off programmer, but the sliders you push ( like on those lamp timmers) are really tiny and fine. Someone with big fingers might have a dickens of a time trying to move those sliders. The Power cord is a nice length but I wish they would have attached to cord to the rear of the unit rather than the front where the "on" signal light, controls and timer dial sit.
I have a heated lower level on a poured concrete floor... which runs a good 10 degrees colder than the upper level. When we turn the thermostat down at night, it gets mighty cold down there, especially in the winter. I am hoping this unit takes some of the chill out during the night, without having to heat the whole house. The unit is suppose to be large enough to heat a 12x12 room. We'll see. There is a lot of heat coming out of the very top of the register when on the highest setting #3. Not as much heat is coming off the sides though. If you had a ceiling fan, that would help push the hot air down from the ceiling and make the room feel warmer......but as it stands, all the nice hot air is going up towards the ceiling.
If you decide to buy this unit.....I STRONGLY suggest you FIRST run it in the garage or outside. but NOT IN THE HOUSE....cause man does it reek. After 2 1/2 hours on HIGH, the odor is mostly gone.......but you'll still smell a "something's hot" odor......but no fumes.

January 4, 2009 UPDATE
Well, the unit works...... but it's stilL useless in open spaces larger than 12x12. Since hot air rises, and the hot air is emitted from the top of this unit, and the unit stands 2 feet tall, the entire room never gets comfortable. All the heat hangs at ceiling level. The area from your waist down, especially your legs and feet will always be cold. I think in a 12x12 insulated room, with the door kept closed, you'd be fine.....or.....if you put a FAN somewhere to distribute the heat downward off the ceiling this would work. I had a small Homes oscillating heater "fan" I can program to a certain temperature. I placed that unit at ground level to suppliment this unit......and together, it kept the basement at 69 degrees.
Would I buy this unit again.... MAYBE. If I had to keep one small bedroom, nursery or workroom/computer/ bathroom or houseplant room warmer than the others..... or If I wanted my room warm at night, but didnt want to heat the entire house.....then this would be good. HOWEVER... if you're planning on heating a family room or great room with this unit.....you'll be disappointed. I'd buy at a couple oscillating Heater Fan if you need to do a large rec or family room. Something you can put at ground level and that will circulate the heat.

The positives:

* No-nonsense oil-filled heater
* Heats up VERY quickly compared to other oil-filled units
* Very affordable
* Solid construction

A few comments:

* There have been a lot of negative comments posted about DeLonghi oil-filled radiators emitting a foul odor when first used. I found this to be only an extremely minor inconvenience. When I first plugged the unit in I noticed a smell for 30-60 minutes, after which time it disappeared. The bottom line is that different people have wildly different sensitivities to various types of odors, and my guess is that people posting the negative comments have higher-than-average sensitivity. Of course, its possible that I have lower-than-average sensitivity, but if the odor was truly as noxious/toxic as some imply, I don't think these units would be commercially successful.

* There have also been complains about the thermostats not being specifically marked with temperature levels. This is true, however, I think it is unrealistic to expect this on a $30-40 unit. After a couple of days of use you will find the appropriate setting for yourself. DeLonghi does make a higher end unit with a digital thermostat, but you'll pay up for it. I have found the thermostat on this unit basic, but functional. It has a reasonable on-off cycle.

* I bought the unit with no timer, and simply hooked it up to a wall timer. You can buy a wall timer for 10 bucks, and when you're not using it with the heater (i.e. off-season) use it for other appliances. More versatility, and less to go wrong with the heating unit itself.

* This unit has plenty of power. I am using it in an unheated basement office in Vermont that is roughly 600 sq ft, and it has plenty of juice on the low and medium settings to keep the room comfortable. It does a take a while to get the room up to heat (1.5 hours), but so did both previous heaters that I used (both were forced air, one was coil-based, and other ceramic).

Purchased for a large bathroom with stone floor. Connected to a separate plug in timer so it warms the bathroom before we get up. Works well. It can get quite hot.
Definitely run outside for 2-3 hours fist use to avoid odors mentioned in other review.
Definitely recommend for the price.

I purchased this heater based on the brand name. I have an older model that has served me well for 20+ years. My older one has individual vanes that the oil circulates through, giving a large area to reflect the heat. With a small fan behind it, it heats a large room. This new one is solid -- can't tell that from the photo as there are decorative pieces of metal that look like vanes from the angle of the photo. But this design give much less surface area to reflect heat. Also, the thermostat has no numbers on it like the older one, so it's really guess and by golly to get it set right. But the main reason I've graded it a 1 and will be returning the heater is the noise. It makes a very loud almost constant clicking noise once it heats up. Loud enough that it kept waking me last night even though it was in an adjacent room. Very disappointing purchase from the company who first marketed these oil-filled radiators.

Having used a DeLonghi heater for many years, it was time to get a few more for other areas of the house. Living in Central NY with 10-foot ceilings creates quite the heating cost. This heater does a phenomenal job of heating 1 room at a time, and saving the cost of heating the whole house. My heating bill has dropped by half, and I am toasty warm sitting near this heater. The new design is much safer, pets and people cannot get burned by touching the heater's housing - a MAJOR plus since the cats want to live on it.

I have used this heater for one winter and on cold fall days. I have not had any problems with this heater. It is used all over the house because it has wheels and can go just about anywhere. I have 2 of them at present but plan to buy some more as well as give them as gifts. If you are looking for a cozy room or to add to your present heating source this one is it. I stay cold all year long (low iron in blood) and this is my standby for creating a warm envinronment. It did take me a minute to understand the timer feature but I just set it to cool itself off for an hour for maintanence of the product and then I use it all day long. Price is good in comparision to what it produces. It is a good buy!

Despite only using this lightly, a few hours a day at the most, during last year's mild winter and then into this one, the unit stopped working. DeLonghi sticks to their 1 year pretty firmly so until other units I have purchased from them, this one is poor quality and I would urge you to look elsewhere. A year and a couple months is substandard and so was the response from DeLonghi customer service.

This radiator came nicely packaged, with no dings or dents. I ran it for a few hours in the basement to "burn" off any start up smells it might have. After that it has been fine, and I am sensitive to smells. It heats up a 15 x 8 bedroom (with the door closed) nicely. Also, we have not noticed any noises coming from our unit, it is very quiet.

This heater was purchased to heat our Greenhouse over the winter months and it works great for that purpose with no bad or toxic fumes to harm the plants!
