5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Coffee AND Spices...yes I said Spices...:), June 1, 2010
This review is from: DeLonghi KG40 Electric Coffee-Bean Grinder with Stainless-Steel Blade (Kitchen)
While this excellent grinder does a great job on coffee beans, many users now use coffee grinders to make fresh ground spices (without the high cost). Many coffee grinders struggle with coffee beans alone and simply fail (or die trying) to grind the harder spices.

Using durable stainless steel grinding blades (something that many grinders do not have), the KG40 grinds coffee beans, cinnamon, basil, rosemary, mustard seed, coriander, cumin, peppercorn, bay laurels, and many other spices. These are contained in a hopper that is covered by a lid with transparent sidings allowing you to see into it to the progress so your end result is exactly what you want.

The top of the lid incorporates the switch that activates the grinder. As a safety measure and to prevent the coffee grounds and spices from getting strewn all over your kitchen, the lid has to be properly closed before the switch can be pressed and held down to start grinding. When the grounds reach the desired consistency, simply stop pressing the switch.

The hopper is removable so you can pour out the ground spice instead of scooping it. A brush, which is stored inside the body of the KG40, is supplied for a quick clean. You will need to wash it thoroughly with soap and water though if, after grinding spices, you want to use it for coffee beans otherwise you will have coffee that tastes like the last thing you ground up! I highly recommend you get 2 units so you can always have a clean hopper and you have a backup main motor unit if you need it later on after the warranty expires.

Below is my comment on the 2 star review that is posted by another user.

Why in the world would you have to trash the item when you are 1 month into a 12 month warranty? Sounds a little fishy to me. Heck Amazon would have replaced it themselves had you asked. So the question here is why would be believe anything you say when it doesn't seem to follow logic. (For the record to my knowledge you can add to a feedback but NOT change the amount of stars given, so understand that "edit" part is a lie as well).

5.0 out of 5 stars Serious Coffee Lover!, June 2, 2010
This review is from: DeLonghi KG40 Electric Coffee-Bean Grinder with Stainless-Steel Blade (Kitchen)
Anyone who is a serious coffee lover grinds their own coffee. What first attracted me to this grinder was the brand. I currently have a DeLonghi coffee make and just adore it. This is my first time using one of their grinders, I'm very please. It's nice and small and can be easily placed in the cupboard. Although I don't leave it out on the counter I do appreciate the overall appearance of this grinder. The black and clear with a hint of stainless feel sleek and modern alone with the overall shape. Like most coffee grinders the blades are stainless steel and seem very durable. I feel very safe leaving on my counter with the safety lock feature. My little tot is getting to the age of climbing on the counter so that is always a concern of mine. I think the amount of coffee it holds works well. In my experience the grinders that can hold more do not seem to handle grinding that much. I love the pop out container and included brush. The price was exactly what I was wanting to pay for a new grinder. Overall I've been very pleased with this grinder, much better than my old Krups grinder. I prefer finely grinded coffee and it does the job great. I would highly recommend this to any coffee lover. I have not used it for spices yet but that is a great idea and I will defiantly be trying that. I'm thinking this might even be a great Christmas gift this year. I absolutely love mine and it's a very affordable gift. So, from one happy customer to you, this is a terrific buy. DeLonghi has a gained a lifetime customer.

This review is from: DeLonghi KG40 Electric Coffee-Bean Grinder with Stainless-Steel Blade (Kitchen)

Update: What a short life this grinder had. While it worked, it was excellent. It just could not take the work-out I gave it. It was great while it lasted (1 month). I took my five stars away and am replacing with two due to having to trash the item.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lacking key features, but does well, January 19, 2011
This review is from: DeLonghi KG40 Electric Coffee-Bean Grinder with Stainless-Steel Blade (Kitchen)
This grinder (the KG40 model) is lacking two key features:

1) Grind time adjustment: On this model, there's no setting or dial that allows you to select a desired grind time. So you totally have to guess at how long you should grind your beans. This is a key feature for me, and my old $19 Hamilton Beach coffee grinder had this! (the next model up, the KG49 does have this) Because you cannot really see into the chamber, this is a total guessing game.

2) Bean measurement: Again, my old $19 grinder from Wal Mart had measurement marks on the side of the chamber so I knew how many beans to add based on the size of the pot. WIth this one, you just have to guess.

Basically, I want to be able to get up in the morning, put in a measured amount of beans, grind for a measured amount of time, have a very consistent grind, and make coffee. This grinder does nothing to help with this. Even the most sophisticated coffee experts would have problems getting things just right with this grinder.

Additional frustrations:

3) On/Off pressure: To turn this grinder on and off, you have to press down on the top of it. This requires a good amount of pressure. Someone who is shorter or smaller would really have to "put their back into it."

4) Cheesy brush: On my old grinder, I regularly use the brush. It had stiff bristles, and did a great job of cleaning out the chamber. This is NOT the case here. The brush's bristles are very soft and flimsy, rendering it unusable.

5) Doesn't stay clean: As other reviewers have mentioned, this grinder has 2 major pieces. a) The chamber where the grinding happens, and b) The lid that fits over the chamber that you press down on to activate the blades. This design lends itself to lots of coffee grinds falling into the motor housing and your countertop as you lift the top lid up. This is because coffee grinds stick to this top lid, and then fall all over the place.

Bottom line: I would not buy this again if I had the choice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, December 29, 2010
This review is from: DeLonghi KG40 Electric Coffee-Bean Grinder with Stainless-Steel Blade (Kitchen)
A friend has a Delonghi; small, and super quiet. That does NOT describe this model!
It is huge (the image deceives), noisy, and takes as long to grind as my very old and dull-bladed Krups I wanted to replace. Worst of all, you have to exert a ton of double-armed-pressure to activate. I'll keep using my Krups till it falls apart, thank you.
Also, that thing sticking up turns out to be a loosely set in handled-brush for cleaning. It is too easy to knock out of its holder, and is pointless and gimmicky. Returning.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Design Flaws, July 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: DeLonghi KG40 Electric Coffee-Bean Grinder with Stainless-Steel Blade (Kitchen)
I finally replaced my original DeLonghi grinder after many years of use. I did not read the reviews first, nor did I look seriously at the design. This is a flawed grinder that will bring any serious coffee lover to tears. The top piece fits over the bean area so that when you go to replace the top after removing it, the ground residue falls out and makes a real mess, unless you bother to tap the thing to death first. There is no indicator light to let you know how fine the beans are being ground, so it's really a guessing game since you cannot see into the bean depository. The top operating on/off button takes a gorilla's strength to push, and the cord does not smoothly disappear to anywhere. It is really hard to manage when dumping the grounds to a receptacle, mine is a Chemex coffee maker. Please do not waste your money on this model unless you wake up in a really good mood in the morning!

1.0 out of 5 stars DeTerrible DeLonghi DeProduct, December 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: DeLonghi KG40 Electric Coffee-Bean Grinder with Stainless-Steel Blade (Kitchen)
This coffee grinder is a joke. Honestly, this is really all that needs to be said. Please follow the advice of the low ratings from other writers here and ignore the hype. Had I seen this item hands on in a store, I would have walked away. It has a bulky cheap plastic feel it. The accessory brush for cleaning the machine is about as cheap as you will ever see on any product. The bristles are so weak that after two uses (even being quite careful), they will snag on the side holder and fray. Totally useless too boot. The lid (on my model) does not fit snug which allows for more vibrational noise than necessary. I may chalk that one up to quality control though. And finally, as stated here a couple of times, the amount of force it takes to depress the "push" area on top of the lid is, well, completely uncalled for.

So please, take my advice as well as the others who have taken the time to inform you . . . do NOT buy this grinder!

1.0 out of 5 stars Great Grind - for two days, September 5, 2011
By
This review is from: DeLonghi KG40 Electric Coffee-Bean Grinder with Stainless-Steel Blade (Kitchen)
The grinder did a good job while it lasted. It did feel from the beginning that you had to line up everything just perfectly to make it work. Now two days later, it will not work at all. So, though there is a glowing review, I now see that others have had these grinders fail far too quickly. Oh well, back it goes.

Does not run unless held down with excessive pressure. Blade is dull too and does not produce a burr.
