looks like me and that other lady got the only two DeLonghi toaster ovens that work! well, actually it's my roommate's toaster oven. but i've gotten tons of mileage out of the thing. what's this about warped heating coils? the coils look fine from here. it's a snazzy looking shiny steel toaster oven, darnit, and it cooks what i need it to cook: toast is fine, bagels are...

This toaster oven LOOKS cool. Everyone who comes into my kitchen comments on it. And frankly that's why I bought it. I figured all toaster ovens are alike, why not get one that looks different. This toaster oven LOOKS cool. Everyone who comes into my kitchen comments on it. And frankly that's why I bought it. I figured all toaster ovens are alike, why not get one that looks different. I'll tell you why. The loud clicking of the analog timer is semi-annoying, but if your toast (or whatever) is ready before the timer runs out, you can't just push a button and turn it off. The timer has to tick through to the end. The timer broke the 3rd week I had the thing (ok I confess, I got impatient and tried to turn the timer off before it was done).

This toaster oven serves to remind me that looks aren't everything.

However it's a roomy little thing and comfortably fits 4 slices of bread. It has a nice baking tray too.

Something splattered on the inside of the glass on the door and I cannot clean it off. I don't bake in it and don't use it much so it's just a few spots but they are buggin me because I can't get them off.

What I've learned? Go digital. :)

2.0 out of 5 stars DeLONGHI'S TIMING SURE IS OFF!, January 13, 2004
This review is from: DeLonghi XR640 Retro Toaster Oven (Kitchen)
A sun dial would be more use to us than the timer on this toaster oven. Jiggling helps but then it heats to the highest burning any bread we had hoped to toast.

Calls to the manufacturer have been futile.

The only thing retro about this item is the way it doesn't work.

4.0 out of 5 stars How can all of you be talking about..., December 28, 2005
This review is from: DeLonghi XR640 Retro Toaster Oven (Kitchen)
...the toaster oven I love so much? I'm surprised by all the very negative reviews. I've found this to be one of the most useful tools in my kitchen and can't remember what I did without one. I've had the chance to use many different toaster ovens over the years (at work and in homes) and I never thought I'd purchase one. I ended up wanting one to toast bagels in because I was getting sick of digging them out of the toaster and then one day I saw one of my children digging one out of the toaster with a fork. I went shopping for a toaster oven the very next day. I wanted one that would toast from both sides and one that looked like it wouldn't be the devil to clean.

Now I use my toaster oven for many things, so many more than just toasting a bagel now and then, and I think many of you who have written negative reviews must lack imagination in the ways that you can put this kitchen appliance to pratical use. It's not that hard to operate! Even my children know where to set the dial to get the perfect toast for them.

Then I laugh at the one thing many of you bought it for--the looks!! That's hysterical! It's the one thing that almost made me NOT buy this toaster oven. Now, after 2 years of use, I have gotten used to its looks. It still looks practically new too, since it cleans up so easily.

I like it so much I am looking for another one for my dad for Christmas. That's how I came upon these many negative reviews and had to respond because I find it hard to believe you are talking about the same toaster oven that has changed my negative opinion about toaster ovens into a very positive one.

1.0 out of 5 stars It may look good..., January 4, 2003
By A Customer

It may look good, but in the long run I would not recommend this toaster oven. I purchased this product September 2001...I threw it away December 2002. After 11 months the timer/auto shut off stopped working...it would still toast, but I had to keep an eye on it or it would burn. I kept the toaster oven because I paid over [$] for it and didn't have the cash for a new one. Finally, it quit altogether and I contacted DeLonghi. I was told that the warrenty was expired and they would not cover for a replacement or repair. I would think that an expensive taoster oven would work in good order for longer then a year. Good thing Santa got me another, less expensive and so far, better toaster oven!

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheap construction, May 6, 2004

I just looked at this item at my local department store because it was on sale for $60, and I was shocked at poor quality of its construction. The knobs were made of very cheap, light plastic, and looked like they would break easily. I'm glad the other reviewers share a similar view-- this one's a dog.

1.0 out of 5 stars It burned my toast!, October 12, 2004

We received our lovely Delonghi toaster oven yesterday in the mail, after purchasing it through Ebay. My husband did some research through Consumer Reports magazine and picked this one on its ratings.

So much for ratings. We immediately tested the toasting function and it failed miserably. It burned 2 peices of toast after setting it at Medium and Light, consecutively. We have to set the toasting level under "Light" in order for the toast not to burn.

I haven't tested the oven/broiling mechanism yet, but plan to soon. We also noticed how easy it would be to accidentally turn the toaster oven on and not notice it. I am very concerned about a fire hazzard w/ having young children in the house.

1.0 out of 5 stars breaks easily, April 4, 2006
This review is from: DeLonghi XR640 Retro Toaster Oven (Kitchen)
We liked this toaster...while it worked. Not long after purchasing it the timer broke and now it only turns off if you unplug it from the wall. As a busy mom who has burned several loaves worth of toast at this point, needless to say I am done with this appliance!

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty happy, March 3, 2006
By

This is the second time we have purchased this toaster oven. The first one we owned lasted for about three years and then the timer broke and it started burning things, as mention in some of the other reviews. For the three years that it did work, We really loved it and it worked fine. It does look great in our kitchen. When we went out to buy a new one we couldn't find one that we liked as much. So, we decided that we didn't care that it would potentially break again in another three years and just purchased it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as the old one!!, August 8, 2005

Our "old" DeLonghi was suffering from over 12 years of fairly consistent use, mostly in oven mode, although it had also made its fair share of toast. We decided to replace it several months ago and assumed a national-store brand toaster-oven at a slightly lower price would be fine. Two months later, that unit was returned having created a fair amount of frustration for both my wife and I in its use - even to just make toast - and its timer would not shut off.

We agreed it was back to a DeLonghi, and this one has proven to be as friendly to use and competent in its work as the "old" one was. We are thrilled - making toast should never be a task one dreads. If it takes a little longer than a pop-up to make the toast, that's fine. We can't make small dinners or bake rolls in a pop-up and this unit is used more for that than it is for making toast. I know my wife is very happy with it, and that alone was worth the extra cost.
