This review is from: DeLorme Earthmate BT-20 GPS [OLD VERSION] (DVD-ROM)
I very much like the DeLorme EarthmateŽ BT-20, but I can't say the same for the DeLorme Street Atlas USAŽ 2009 software.
The DeLorme EarthmateŽ BT-20 works like a charm, both USB connected and Bluetooth connected. Via Bluetooth, it's a serial port ("virtual COM port") device. Via USB, I'm using the "DeLorme Serial Emulation Driver for EarthmateŽ GPS Receivers" with it (http://www.delorme.com/support/supporttemplate.aspx?id=319). Hence, via USB, it's also a serial port ("virtual COM port") device. It's working very well for me with the DeLorme Street Atlas USAŽ 2009 software and also with other software that communicates with a GPS device via a serial port. Vis-a-vis the DeLorme Street Atlas USAŽ 2009 software, I like the look and feel of the user interface and I don't have any trouble using it. Features and functions wise, it's great. But, for me at least, the map data is useless. In my neck of the woods (Seminole County in central Florida), its map data is egregiously riddled with errors and omissions: many roads are missing, many roads are incorrectly named/labeled, and many points of interest are misplaced. In the DeLorme Forums, there are user comments that the same is true elsewhere around the country.

I agree with many of the other reviews regarding the awkwardness of the DeLorme software user interface. The software would benefit from a re-write to fix several annoyances that should be easily apparent to both experienced and novice users. Delorme should have users direct the software development team.
On the plus side, the DeLorme software provides excellent utility to portable devices, such as a Palm PDA or Treo. I use my BT-20 with a Palm TX PDA. I export the DeLorme maps to the PDA (through the DeLorme software), connect to the GPS via the Bluetooth link, and have a near-instant moving map position on the display. I also fly aircraft for fun and use the BT-20 to drive the Flight-Master aviation navigation software on my PDA (Note: The FAA has not approved any portable GPS devices for IFR navigation. Portable GPS devices are however recommended for situational awareness). The value of the BT-20 is that I don't have to have a different GPS for flying and a different device for terrestrial use. This unit, when coupled with my Palm PDA, gives me a great solution for both environments. The BT-20 also works with my BlackBerry (along with the free Google Mobile Maps application), and could also probably work directly with my notebook through the BlueTooth connection, although I haven't had much need to try that configuration. It is really convenient to put the BT-20 receiver on the dashboard of the car or plane and have the display on my lap or kneeboard for navigation and situational awareness. Also, when I don't need a GPS, my Palm is still a hand-held computer. I don't have to have separate high-priced devices with me when I drive or fly. The BT-20, and my Palm TX are all that I need for either activity. If you need or want flexibility, the BT-20 is a great option. 5 stars for the GPS receiver. 2 Stars for the Windows-based software. 5 stars for the accompanying Palm application.

I knew going in that this wouldn't be a simple turn on and go anywhere device, but I never guessed how complicated it would turn out to be. The GPS device itself is fine, the bluetooth connected to my IPAQ without any problems, but thats where it ended being easy.
The PC mapping software is very difficult to use, it was a good 30 minutes before I figured out how to even see my own city. The tutorials were useless, and the user interface is useful, but very complex. Also, the maps themselves are highly primitive, not much more than simple line drawings, I'm still trying to figure out if I can get a better map for it. I would only recommend this for those who want flexibility of uses for GPS devices, but not for ease of use.
