Power
DEWALT-designed electronics have been built into the DCD980L2’s switch to provide maximum life for the tools and batteries by helping to protect them from overheating, overloading, and deep discharge during use. The 20-volt’s lithium-ion batteries provide up to 35 percent more runtime than existing 18-volt lithium-ion battery technology. The included charger has dual voltage capabilities, and it is compatible with both 12-volt max and 20-volt max DEWALT lithium-ion batteries. Plus, the drill’s high-power, high-efficiency motor delivers 535 unit watts out of maximum power for superior performance in all drilling and fastening applications.

Speed
The drill/driver’s patented three-speed (0-600 RPM; 0-1,250 RPM; and 0-2,000 RPM), all-metal transmission allows users to select the appropriate speed for the job at hand and provides a significant advantage for applications that cannot be done at high speed because of torque requirements. While other drills may have to be set to the slowest speed, the DEWALT 20-volt max lithium-ion premium 3.0 Ah drill has a middle speed setting that is more than twice as fast for tasks like drilling larger ship auger bits.

Durability
A heavy-duty 1/2-inch metal ratcheting chuck with carbide inserts provides superior bit-gripping strength—reducing slippage during high-torque applications—thus providing longer tool life. And the all-metal gear housing meets the demand for extreme toughness.

Comfort and Convenience
The premium drill’s design incorporates a slim handle that extends user comfort during long jobs, and DEWALT’s engineering and design team adjusted the product footprint and weight allocation for ideal balance and a lightweight feel. The bright built-in LED work light above the trigger has a 20-second delay that improves visibility in dimly lit spaces.

About DEWALT's 20-Volt Max Lithium-Ion Tools
DEWALT’s line of 20-volt max lithium-ion tools features improvements in engineering and design to provide the performance, the ergonomics, and the innovation that contractors require. The new line consists of 11 tools, two lithium ion batteries, and two battery chargers, as well as a number of combo kits.

Upfront Summary/Comparison to 18 Volt:
+ Same durability and solid build that DeWalt is known for
+ Same power and even longer runtime than DeWalt 18 Volt Ni-Cads
+ Much lighter feel, especially in the battery
+ More comfortable grip than predecessors

I am very impressed with this drill, especially because of its lightweight but long lasting battery. I got it to replace an older 18V XPR DeWalt that is similar (DC987KA). The DCD980 is as fast or faster and is more powerful than the 18 volt, which is impressive since nothing could stop that one.

The biggest improvement is the weight. This drill feels like it weighs half as much as the 18V, especially in the battery. Despite the battery's weight and size it runs much longer than my old drill, even when that one was new. This improvement comes from the fact that this drill is powered by a Lithium-Ion battery instead of the Ni-Cad that the older drills used. My guess is that the increased range comes from the 20V system instead of 18V or possibly because of an improved efficiency motor and gearing. The extra amperage rating on the battery, from 2.4 to 3.0 probably helps too. For me, as long as the range far exceeds the charge time, which it does on this drill, I don't worry too much about capacity, but this drill has it either way.

There are some people who are saying that insides of this new 20 Volt battery is identical to the 18 Volt Lithium Ion batteries that DeWalt makes as replacements for its 18 Volt batteries. Whether this is true or not, I don't know, and to me it doesn't really matter. Marketing gimmicks don't really bother me, if the product that they are selling performs the way that it should. This battery, in this drill, runs for a very long time, whether it is really 18 or 20 volts.

The charger is compatible and interchangeable with the DeWalt 12 Volt Max Batteries as well. It is very fast and well laid out. The charging light on it is brighter than the old ones, and seems to be a little overkill. If you have it charging in a dark room, it will turn the whole room red, it is so bright.

The handle is comfortable. I never minded the wide DeWalt handles, that had to be bulky because of the battery stem, but the new design is very comfortable too. They are better, but the biggest comfort comes from the drill's lightweight. To me, how you hold it isn't as important as how much it weights (or in this case, how much it doesn't).

The chuck is easy to use and holds the bit security. It ratchets for a securer fit. There is a small LED light that comes on when you use the drill. It is pretty bright and shines in the work area. I'm not sure yet how I feel about it. It isn't a distraction and probably doesn't affect battery life, but I'm not really sure yet how useful I find it.

The box is similar to the DeWalt boxes that they've been using ever since they switched from metal a few years ago. Because of the smaller batteries, the box is about half the size of the one for my old drill. It is a compact, lightweight, and much improved package.

There isn't that much to say about this drill. It does everything that it is supposed to even better than previous DeWalt models that were already outstanding. I highly recommend it. The only people who won't want to jump on board with this new generation of DeWalt products is those folks that have invested heavily in the previous generation system and don't want to have to deal with two different types of batteries.

In my college days, I got a B&D cordless drill with the 500-bit set or whatever they come with these days. It was cordless, and was fine for dropping screws into the wall to hang heavy frames or adjusting the address numbers on the front of my apartment. A few years go by, and now I'm married with a house and a thirst to build some furniture instead of paying hundreds of dollars for the same stuff from the high-end home decorating stores. After finishing a small project, in which I fought with my starter drill the entire time with its weak power and battery life, and being a disciple of the 'buy quality, buy once' philosophy now that I'm a little older, went for the DCD980L2 to keep me drilling for years to come. The batteries come to a full charge (identifiable by the light on the charging dock going from blinking > solid) in about 45-60 minutes, and run at high-powered strength for about 120 minutes with average use. The fact that this package comes with two batteries is something that puts it over the top - with the use/charge times as they are, you'll never run at anything less than full strength.

The speed/torque settings seem adequate - I admit that I haven't had much of a need for it at anything less than the highest torque, but tiny honey-dos like tightening up cabinet doors or building cheap pre-constructed shelving (aka stuff from that big four-letter Scandinavian place) are knocked out without it breaking a sweat. Then again, if you're looking at drills at this level, you probably have an adequate beater drill for tasks like that, but it's perhaps useful to know it can do the slightly more delicate tasks in addition to the high-resistance tasks.

The light on the front, for its theoretical usefulness, seems to be aimed straight ahead and not a touch upward, where it could better illuminate the actual spot being drilled. Working on the bottom of a 10'x4' 300 lb. farmhouse table which doesn't flip over easily would be a nice time for the light to shine (pardon the pun) though I found myself aiming the light at the spot, then tilting it back down and working blindly, then stopping and tilting the light back over the hole again, etc. This is a fractional niggle and nothing which should deter you. Heck, buy a $5 clip-on light if it's a dealbreaker.

The chuck, forever a cause of many calluses and sore hands after struggling with my old B&D, is a one-handed piece that ratchets firmly into place and only needs to be retightened after a few dozen screws have been countersunk, predrilled, and screwed in. Even after some extra-tight ratcheting, it's fairly easy to disengage to swap bits. In sappy wood, heavy wood, wet wood, it was the bit which failed me, and not the drill. Anyone who does a lot of work like this knows that bits are, at the end of the day, disposable. Your drill is not, and this holds up to the test.

Feel can be an important part of a drill that's used frequently. As a 6'3" guy with above-average sized hands, this neither gets lost in my grip nor feels unwieldy or difficult to manage even when used in high-torque situations. I could see it being a strain on someone of smaller stature, though ultimately the weight and quality of a drill like this should be worth the trade-off for anyone.

I hope Dewalt maintains their uniformity in battery type, or at least respects its customers enough to continue producing the Li-Ion batteries even when something later & greater comes along, as I have a feeling the batteries on this thing will die long before the drill itself does. It's taken the typical swan dives off the workbench, triple backflips off the top shelf of the utility cabinet, and even the occasional belly flop out of my hand, but it's never crossed my mind that I'd be picking up a broken drill. Speed, power, and durability HAVE to be present when doing what I like to do, and the DCD980L2 has it in spades.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
We are not people you would consider Do-It-Yourselfers by any stretch of the imagination. I would go so far as to say if there were practical exams required for home ownership, we might still be living in an apartment.

Our current drill is an inexpensive Ryobi. It's not a bad drill, but the main issue is that the batteries take forever to recharge. We aren't big on planning ahead, so it's a bit of a pain to have to remember to start charging your drill the night before you are ready to work on a project. That isn't a problem with the Dewalt. The one hour quick charge batteries are ready by the time breakfast is done, and with two batteries you can always have one charging and ready.

When I opened the carry case and started to inspect the contents, I wasn't sure about the need for the side handle. I have to admit, while I do not use it every time I drill, it has come in handy. It does a great job of steadying the drill, which is more powerful than I would have expected. I love the light above the trigger; it is a neat feature that you don't appreciate until you need. I thought it was kind of silly at first, but it comes in handy when you need to drill in the dark.

Overall, this drill is more than you will need for the occasional house hold chore; it's hefty and well made. The drill bits are easy to change out, and the multiple speeds make this drill perfect for any job.

My only complaint about this set, and it's a minor one, is that the side handle doesn't have a pronounced spot in the case. It fits in the case just fine, but you kind of just stick it in wherever it fits so that the case will close.
