Nara Kilday has a pretty good life. She's 17, beautiful, smart, has a great friend named Hazy, and is a fun person. Well, that is until she starts having dreams about demons and punches her boyfriend in the mouth while in a trance. Then someone has the nerve to stab her to death! And then dead bodies come to life, possessed by evil spirits, killing innocent people! One of these zombies even comes after her friend Hazy, but incredibly, she is rescued by Nara, who it seems, is one of the "Resurrected", a being that death holds no sway over. She is told this by an agent of the Protectorate, an organization sworn to protect mankind from occult menaces, one of which menaces is out to capture Nara and use her for its own evil purposes.
The artwork of Dead@17 can be disarming at first, having a more manga or Teen Titan feel to it. But once you get used to it, the story takes care of the rest. This is just good clean fun, like a more mature Nancy Drew/Scooby-Doo adventure crossed with a George Romero Dead flick. Very entertaining. Recommended. Was followed by 4 issues of Blood of Saints and then 4 issues of Revolution.

I was first turned on to Josh Howard from an early issue of Black Harvest at the first comic-con I attended in Dallas. I was very impressed with the fantastic "pin-up" type artwork and the cliffhanger story. I looked for a while for his work at my local comics dealer, but then I forgot about it. A year later I was cleaning my office and found this early preview issue and thought I would track the series down. Black Harvest, was excellent, and it made me want to find his earlier work. I found Dead@17. Great artwork, and the "pin-up" style continues throughout most of his books. And it was a great story. It had quite a few similarities to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And, I enjoyed this story just as much. I am glad I was able to get the entire series in one trade paperback so that you can have the entire storyline. This is a great read for any fans of the genre.

Reading the synopses for these you may think to yourself: "Self, I've already read Buffy the Vampire Slayer and all that crap why do I need to read this?" To which I would reply: "You read Buffy? Lame!"Seriously though, it's not like that at all, no pat dialogue, no late thirty-ish people claiming to be teens. And certainly no Angel. This independent series by Josh Howard is one of the most startlingly original series to currently be under everyone's radar. I've only read them sporadically as the trades seem to find their way to me, but this is not your avaerage undead-axe-swinging-vampire-killing-hot-barely-legal-teen-in-a-mini-skirt comic in any sense. Real tension, real dread, and the feeling that any character (even your favorite) could be wiped out at any minute make this a real horror comic. Smart, but not Vertigo line. Who knew?
