A DOA Paradise Review,
By Hwoarang (New York, USA) - See all my reviews

I purchased Dead Or Alive Paradise because I had enjoyed the original Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball on the first XBox. It was a completely unique game with its hybrid sport/simulator playstyle. Giving gifts? Collecting items? A pool-hopping game? Very odd indeed the first time I played it. However, it was nicely executed and I'm sure many enjoyed playing it as I have.
I will not comment on DOAX 2 since I don't have an XBOX360. As for DOA Paradise, I have to say it is a decent port of what I fondly remember from the original DOAX. From my own personal opinion, here is what I believe are its Pros and Cons: Pros: - The volleyball aspect is fair in execution. It isn't as responsive as the original DOAX, but I don't have trouble doing spikes, passes, setups, or blocks. - I'd rate the graphics good for a PSP port. The girls look similar to how they did on the original DOAX. - There is a radio station, so you can set your own MP3s to either play in daytime or nighttime. - Zack dollars is easier to make in this game. For example, a good spike in the original DOAX would yield you Z2,000. In Paradise, you get Z5,000. - Lisa isn't always your default partner in every new game; variety is a good thing. - The girls accept gifts more readily and don't reject so quickly. Cons: - It is a small PSP screen, so it wasn't uncommon for me to miss where the volleyball went sometimes. - There are loading times involved when changing scenarios or loading a shop. - There can be some lag during volleyball gameplay. Not enough to mess up what I am trying to do next, but noticeable. - There are far less swimsuits/items then in the original DOAX. I'd surmise that maybe only 1/3 is in Paradise. - I've yet to see a Beretta or sub-machine gun for purchase; that was such a good gift for Christie. - The chest physics on the girls is unnatural and rather obnoxious to be honest. For new players, I'd recommend starting with Kokoro, Lisa, or Helena; as they are well-balanced between power/defense/technique. Overall, DOA Paradise is a guilty pleasure. However, I'd recommend this game to anyone interested, to buy it and play it.

I've never played any of the other DOA Beach Vollyball games, but this one seemed ok at first.
Reading other reviews about this game share a general consensus that the never stopping 'bouncing breasts' are somewhat of an issue. Constantly moving breasts even while the character is not moving is highly distracting and sometimes awkward. Especially if someone sees you playing this game. Other than that the mini games are fun and the beach vollyball game was the focal point for this series of games. Like I said, I've never played any of the other DOA Beach Vollyball games and I was unaware of vollyball's importance because of other factors of the game. An example of this is taking pictures of the girls in various swimsuits to add to your photo collection. The more often you secretly take pictures like a creepy stalker, the more bonuses become available. I found that somewhat disturbing and the photos you take don't even come out that well. Another feature is that you can play music stored in your PSP in the game as a radio station, but I never used it much because some kinds of music like Metal and Rock sort of throw off the mood when watching what the girls are doing. But thats just my opinion. I haven't completed the game yet, I got around to 3 of the girls but essentially the gameplay is pretty much the same for each one. Again, thats just my opinion.

Basically a downgraded version of Xtreme Beach Volleyball 2 - with a new character. Fun at first - but boring later. Due to the constant load times as well because it's on a handheld... not too great. It's amazing how they were able to port the 360 version on the PSP - but if you didn't like it before - you probably won't like it now. Rent.

At first I didn't know what this game was about until I got the hang of it. The game is basically about getting clips of the girls doing their own thing while also imitating others. I think it is very nice game to play on the go.

Firstly I bought this game as a drawing ref tool, and I am quite satisfied with it. Particularly because there is a mode where you act as the photographer and you can take shots of the females and save them. Some of the mini games are actually pretty fun. You can change their swimsuits by earning points to buy them in game. I am really having a blast as a photographer. It makes me feel like a sports illustrated swimsuit model photographer.

While there are many positives, I think Tecmo could improve and make this a truly incredible and refined game.
Here's hoping the next installment is up to Tecmo's high quality standards!! |
