Book Description

Opening an old-fashioned five-and-dime shop in her small Missouri hometown has been a great change for Devereaux “Dev” Sinclair. But when she hosts a reading group there, she learns that bad writing can mean life or death.

To keep her new business in the black, Dev opens up her shop to local clubs. But in the first meeting of the Stepping Out Book Club, the speaker storms out after members attack his poetry’s sexism and scorn for small towns. Later that night, the poet’s body is found outside Dev’s store.

Dev can’t afford for the murder to close her down, so she does a little stepping out of her own to investigate, with help from her two sexy suitors, Dr. Noah Underwood and Deputy U.S. Marshal Jake Del Vecchio. But when the killer threatens Dev, they will have to use every trick in the book to solve the case before she becomes the final chapter in this murder mystery.…

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT SERIES LOVE IT!!!!! March 4, 2014
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This third book in the series gave Dev’s witty humor, that had me turn the pages with giggles. Dev is the exact kind of best friend you want in your corner. She has still the two yummylishious men wanting all her attention. Again, I was shocked at who the murderer was. Denise, leaves you in awe at the Who Dun It, when there so many that could be the “one”. I really love being shocked into the AHA moment. As a reader Dev and her family become your family. Also glad that her love for the one person(I can’t give it away) has finally made the way back into the story. Really, can’t wait for book 4 and more fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dead Between the Lines (4.5 Stars) March 4, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Source: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A small town book club meeting gone awry, dark secrets meant to stay buried, and murder! DEAD BETWEEN THE LINES is a juicy cozy mystery that had me hooked from the beginning.

Dev Sinclair runs Shadow Bend’s dime store, and to help make ends meet, she rents out space for local club events. On the evening the Stepping Out Book Club held its meeting, things go terribly wrong. The guest speaker, a local poet, turns out to be a misogynistic jerk who manages to offend everyone. He storms out in a huff and is later found dead in Dev’s trash behind her store. Mr. Unpleasant was harboring some big secrets, ones that made him even more unlikable, if that’s possible.

With an ear to the gossip grapevine of Shadow Bend and an eye on possible suspects, clever Dev becomes an invaluable resource to the police’s murder investigation. I like Dev. She’s a down to earth gal who takes a sensible approach to amateur sleuthing. She also gets some help from the two men in her life – U.S. Marshal Jake and Dr. Noah. Both guys have a thing for Dev, and she kind of has a thing for both of them, which complicates things.

DEAD BETWEEN THE LINES was an enjoyable read. It was a fast-paced and exciting mystery, and I was rather surprised to learn who the killer was. This is the third book in the series, though it could be read stand alone. Recommended to fans of cozy mysteries who like a healthy dose of romance mixed in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Devereaux Strikes Again March 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Denise Swanson has another winner. This is Ms. Swanson second series, and it is good as the Scumble River Mysteries. This is the third one in the Devereaux's Dime Store Mysteries, but it can stand alone.
Dev Sinclair was a successful business woman who gives up her well paying job to come home and take care of her grandmother. She opens a DIme Store and decides to let different clubs rent space supplement her income. With an obnoxious speaker for the Book Club, Dev is plunged into a murder after the speaker's body in found behind her store. Without giving anything way, Dev and her two boyfriends search for the killer who is complete surprise. I usually can figure out the culprit but this one was a complete surprise.
This is a wonderful cozy mystery. The romance in the book is fun. Dev and her grandmother are delightful. Every series has to have a character you love to hate, and this is no exception. Ms. Swanson makes you care for her characters which makes this series for me.
Buy the book and enjoy a wonderful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, great plots March 4, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I say plots because there are two. First is the classic whodunit, and then there is a delightful romantic plot interwoven with it. Love getting to know more about the continuing characters, and love reading their wisecracks observations. A great third book in what I hope is a long series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising! March 21, 2014
By Nancy O
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I love all of Denise's books and this one was no let down. I wanted it to keep going. She left us with a cliff hanger of sorts so hopefully there will be more Dime Store mysteries. Keep up the great work Denise!

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Dev! March 9, 2014
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
Well, I just finished Denise Swanson's latest Dime Store Book. Dev got caught up in a murder investigation after an author was killed outside her store. With all the twists and turns, the story was so well written that I really did not have a clue as to who the killer was. But it all made sense in the end. Plus, the added story line of Dev's love life, the two men vying for her affection, her eclectic group of friends, her family and the townspeople make you feel like you are there in the midst of the action. All of Ms. Swanson's books, including the Scumble River series, are like visiting with old friends. I only wish we didn't have to wait so long for the next book. Cannot wait to see what happens next! Will she choose her old high school boyfriend or the hot detective? (I, personally, am on team Jake.)
If you have not read any of the books in these 2 series, please allow yourself the pleasure of meeting Dev and Skye. I highly recommend them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cozy Romance Mystery March 8, 2014
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Dollycas’s Thoughts

Another great story from Denise Swanson. I categorized this one as a Cozy Romance Mystery because the romantic triangle of Dev, Dr. Noah and Deputy U.S. Marshall Jake is really the prime storyline in my opinion. With Jake back in town and thinking about making that permanent, Dev is going to have to make a decision sooner rather than later. You can only keep these two men in limbo for so long or there may a murder that will be easy to solve. Thankfully I am sure one man will back off gracefully but unhappily when she makes her decision.

I love that Dev opens up the extra room to local groups to make a little extra money. This time it is the Stepping Out Book Club that is featured when their guest speaker turns up dead way too close to the five and dime. I was surprised the entire group didn’t strike him down right in the middle of the meeting. What a first class jerk he was!! I will say that final twist that unveils the killer was jaw dropping. I did not see it coming at all.

This series is filled with very interesting characters and I can’t wait to see where the author takes them next. The possibilities seem endless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, easy read
Generally a nice, easy read that was fun but Didnt require a lot of deep involvement. Could have had a little less "angst" about the choice between the two men.
