Editorial Reviews

DEAD IN THE BOOT brings together B-sides and the odd non-album track from the British bands 13 year recording career. It may be categorized as a B-sides album but the songs here stand shoulder to shoulder with every other Elbow release.

When a band releases its "Best Of B-Sides" record, that's usually an ominous cue that they might be running out of ideas. And yes, I know that on the last tour, Elbow did like a 5-song ballad break in the middle of every set while the band sat around a table and drank whiskey in celebration of their 20th anniversary together as Guy Garvey serenaded them. There's just one problem with the stereotype: this is actually a terrific album that might be better than one or two of their studio albums. Obviously, it being a B-side collection, there's no lead single here, but so what? There wasn't one on their last record either. Instead you get 13 moody meditations on everything from the price of phone sex to the War On Terror.

The reason this record is so good is because Elbow cranks out two or three of these murky, whiskey-and-cigarette infused distorted discontented grumbling drifters for every one of their stadium stompers, and so a ton of gems get left on the cutting room floor for every session. To wit, with their most recent album Build A Rocket Boys!, the lovely little tune Buffalo Ghosts got B-sided while the mail-it-in With Love went on the record. Problem solved: Buffalo Ghosts is here. And don't get me started on the gorgeous EP-that-never-happened that the Leaders Of The Free World sessions produced. Suffice to say that that album's title track, a political stomper that the band still plays at shows, wasn't even the best War On Terror song. That's here, it's called The Long War Shuffle, it'll never get 10,000 people clapping in unison, but it's terrific and even now is more politically salient than 90% of the contents of Newsweek Magazine.

For American fans of this band, their B-sides have been almost impossible to get up to now by any legal means.

I thought The Seldom Seen Kid was a pretty album, and I was curious when I heard about Dead in the Boot. This is an interesting collection of songs (B sides and non-album tracks) that have a very ethereal feel to them. This comes across the strongest on "None One" with its somber piano and eerie synth and vocals. The same verse is merely repeated twice "Hey there/Tell me/Does he/Kiss your eyes?/Do you talk/Like I've died now?". I guess you could say the lyrics are on the opaque side. That is true on a few other songs that are sparse in that department - "Lullaby", "Lay Down Your Cross", "Waving From Windows", and "Every Bit The Little Girl" among them.

This album can give you musical whiplash the way some of the songs are ordered. The most ferocious song "McGreggor" is between the gentle numbers "Lullaby" and "Buffalo Ghosts". I say that rather tongue in cheek, though. It gives the album variety. Other variations include the vocal delivery. On "Gentle As" it is very straight ahead while "Love Blown Down" is distorted. "Lullaby" features rich harmonies.

In the end, Dead in the Boot is a collection of mostly mellow mood music. While they are B sides, they fit together pretty well. I think you should give it try if you like their other stuff.

Being a dedicated Elbow fan I mulled over whether or not to buy this album having read the reviews and listened to snippets of a few songs. My total admiration for all their earlier releases finally overcame any lingering doubts. Oh dear !! With one or two exceptions this collection of so called B-sides seldom reaches the heights of previous Elbow releases. I must say despite the honest album description (a collection of B-sides) I can't help feeling disappointed with the band's decision to release this material. If you are new to Elbow and want to start with their latest release I would advise against starting here. Better start with The Seldom Seen Kid which is probably their strongest and most commercially successful album to date.

This is the first album of Elbow's that I've owned. I simply love it. It took several listens to get all the nuances and to catch all the masterful lyrics, but I think that's the mark of great music: it takes some digestion, like a great meal. The instrumentation on the songs is unique and atmospheric, and Garvey's voice is whiskey glass. I love Long War Shuffle and Macgreggor but also Buffalo Ghosts and.well, all the songs, depending on the mood I'm in. I learned about this band because I saw that Benedict Cumberbatch (my hands-down favorite actor) goes to their concerts, so I checked them out. I am not at all disappointed.

Hands down one of the best sounding vinyls I've ever purchased. Incredibly flat, wonderfully quiet, and well pressed, this is an album that will be played over and over again. Would definitely recommend!!

By the way, my equipment is:

Audio Technica LP1240
Yamaha RX-V659
Polk Monitor 70II

Elbow is by and large one of my favorite bands. Even though they're one of my favorites, I'm still always skeptical when it comes to an album of b-sides and leftovers. However, Elbow did a great job of hand-selecting this collection of songs, and it doesn't disappoint. There are a few stand-outs, like Whisper Grass and Lay Down Your Cross, while others are sedate enough to fall asleep to. Though most of the tracks here are the softer fare in the Elbow catalog, it's still very much Elbow, and will tide their fans over until the next proper album.
