Take John Mooney. Add a bit more funk, and get him wasted. He might sound like this. There are plenty of blues guitar slingers who can burn up the fretboard. Lisi has the skill to do so, but he would rather just have fun. Lisi calls his band "Delta Funk," and that is a decent descriptor. "Delta" implies delta blues in the tradition of Son House, Robert Johnson, et al. However, Lisi's blues sound draws more from a combination of New Orleans and Northern Mississippi hill country. Then, he throws in some southern funk in a stripped-down trio setting. Basically, this is drunken party music for people with high musical standards. Bringing it back to the guitar, Lisi is sloppy-as-Hades, but the combination of fast fretwork and reckless slide playing suits the sound of the band perfectly. Sonny Landreth is mind-bogglingly brilliant, but if he played on this album with his usual precision, it just wouldn't sound right. This is my favorite Lisi album so far. It is high energy, and it is fun, but don't listen too closely if a bum note every once in a while is going to drive you crazy. Further listening: John Mooney, Tab Benoit, Damon Fowler, Anders Osborne, Richard Johnston. [...]
