Book Description

February 2001
For a decade, writers have been congregating at the misty, mysterious Oregon coast to write ghost stories at the annual Ghost Story Weekend. The agenda for the event is simple: Write a ghost story during the weekend. Naturally, the topic of conversation runs to the universal mysteries, as well as to the confession of fears. Each writer must be creative on demand, and invoke those thoughts, feelings, speculations and spirits that combine to make a good story. And in the end—though many refuse to believe it upon arrival—everybody completes a ghost story by the end of the weekend. And every writer there learns something new about his/herself in the process.

In this anthology of twenty stories, you will read what scares these writers. There is something in these pages for everybody, from the retooled urban legend to the sweetly sentimental to the horrific. We have haunted castles, haunted mirrors, haunted boathouses, haunted houses, haunted train tracks, haunted woods, and to be sure, haunted graveyards.

So light a candle, cozy down and get ready to explore the depths of your own ideas of death, and beyond.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The Ghost Story Workshop presents Dead on Demand: The Best of Ghost Story Weekend, with hair-raising work by 20 writers, including the editor, Elizabeth Engstrom, as well as Banjo Bandolas, Cindy Foster and Dixie Gaede. Tobin Blake's "Grim's Redemption" tells of a dying daughter, her distraught father and a visit by death, in the shape of a man named Grim, that yields unexpected results.

From Library Journal

At Siltcoos Lake on the foggy coast of Oregon, writers have been gathering for a decade for the Ghost Story Weekend. The assignment is simple: write a ghost story before you leave. Editor Engstrom (Lizzie Borden) has compiled 20 of the best stories to emerge from those weekends, produced by such writers as Christina Lay, Lynn Bohart, Alan M. Clark, and Susan Palmer. Many of the stories are set on that same foggy coast, but the similarity ends there. The stories range from terrifying Windigos in the backwoods to haunted rolling pins in cozy kitchens, from adulterous husbands to lost twins, from teenage ghosts to ghosts who switch places with the living, and from the sentimental to the amusing to the totally scary. All the pieces are well written, and the variety of voices and subjects makes turning each page a new adventure. This book is a treat, with stories that will haunt for a long time, and is recommended for high school, public, and academic libraries. Katherine Kaigler-Koenig, Ellis Sch., Pittsburgh

More About the Author

Elizabeth (Liz) Engstrom grew up in Park Ridge, Illinois (a Chicago suburb where she lived with her father) and Kaysville, Utah (north of Salt Lake City, where she lived with her mother). After graduating from high school in Illinois, she ventured west in a serious search for acceptable weather, eventually settling in Honolulu. She attended college and worked as an advertising copywriter.

After eight years on Oahu, she moved to Maui, found a business partner and opened an advertising agency. One husband, two children and five years later, she sold the agency to her partner and had enough seed money to try her hand at full time fiction writing, her lifelong dream. With the help of her mentor, science fiction great Theodore Sturgeon, When Darkness Loves Us was published.

Engstrom moved to Eugene, Oregon in 1986, where she lives with her husband Al Cratty, the legendary muskie fisherman, and their Duck Tolling Retriever, Jook. Liz holds a BA in English Literature and Creative Writing and a Master of Arts in Applied Theology, both from Marylhurst University. A recluse at heart, she still emerges into public occasionally to speak at a writers conference, or to teach a class on various aspects of writing the novel, essay, article or short story. An avid knitter and gardener, she is on faculty at the University of Phoenix and is always working on the next book. Learn more at www.elizabethengstrom.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Spooky and A Lot of Fun, August 6, 2001

The talent of some people never ceases to amaze me. It was such fun to read through all these short imaginative tales. I can hardly wait to take this book with me on my next long airplane trip so I can sit and read uninterrupted and let my mind wander into the world "beyond". I especially enjoyed the selection by Sandra Aikman entitled "Pia". Is it a true story? I got the feeling while I was reading Pia, that it was not a make-believe ghost story. Good writing and good reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection, July 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Dead on Demand : The Best of Ghost Story Weekend (Paperback)
The Best of Ghost Story Weekend is a wonderful collection of short stories. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the writing from mostly novice authors. After I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. All of the stories were very imaginative and not so far "out there" that they weren't plausible. I got goose bumps more than once. It is a definate must-read for anyone who enjoys spooky stories and tales of the "other side." My favorite story is "Pia."

5.0 out of 5 stars Dead on Demand, July 23, 2001

I found many of the stories had very new approaches to the traditional Ghost Story genre and were immensly gripping. I also loved the flavor of nature and the west in general that permiated each story. My favorite was Banjo Bandolas' "One Last Soul." I didn't want it to end. Please write a sequil Mr. Bandolas if you read this! I highly recommend this book!
