INTO ETERNITY - Dead or Dreaming
-
Canada's Into Eternity is by far one of the most creative metal bands around... Not just in this Country, but in the metal world as a whole. Their styles and influences are greatly varied... it is seldom that a band is able incorporate so many different styles into their music. In addition to their top notch Musicianship, they also use a multi-vocalist assault. (An actual singer /screamer, plus the guitars and bass players lend their voices as back ups.) Which only further adds to their unique Metal Approach. Though I heard this album after their Masterpiece "Buried in Oblivion"... "Dead or Dreaming" still sounds incredible. Granted the production is a bit more `raw' but the song writing is just as good. And even though they've clearly grown as musicians their performance on this CD is still note worth... These guys have a fantastic Rhythm section, Drums are incredible and the Bass is audible and sounds great... And then of course there is the Guitar playing... lots of great licks and tons of classic and some not so classic solos. Easily some of the finest young talent around in todays Metal world.
Favorite Songs: Absolution of the Soul, Distant Pale Future, Selling God, and Cyber Messiah.
-4.5 Stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great find..., July 1, 2004

The last reviewer said these guys are better than Opeth...well I would not go that far (not even close to that far), but they are VERY good. Definitly one of my top 10 bands. I bought this CD though, because of a few reviewers who mentioned that if you liked Opeth you would like these guys. On first listen, I thought, "Ummm...what were they thinking?" After a few more listens I changed my tune. They sound much different than Opeth, yet have many common attributes which is what I think attracts lovers of Opeth...the changes from ultra-heavy to mellow and melodic, the use of solid clean vocals and nice, heavy growling, and the excellent song writing. The music is certainly not as awe-inspiring as Opeth, but in this world where 5 star worthy music is hard to come by, Into Eternity is a joyous discovery.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent Metal, September 10, 2002

Into Eternity is a newly signed band from Century Media hailing from the USA. Their style can best be described as progressive melodic death metal however hints of thrash, traditional, and fussion can also be heard. They sound like a cross between Nevermore, Dream Theater, Rush, Old Megadeth, and modern death. Even though the music is mainly melodic death the vocals are mostly clean which really sets this band apart. I personally listen to a lot of melodic death metal for the great musicanship and heaviness but I don't really like the death vocals I just tolerate them. The vocals remind me a little of Sebastian Bach with a little less rasp. Musically the songs are very catchy, heavy, and while complex still very followable. All songs are in odd meter timings which is cool and fits the bands style. There is some very impressive musicianship displayed by all band members and the production is clear and tight. Really the only complaint I have of this album is the guitar tone is not a total bottom ended muscular one. It is not weak but they could do better. Overall a great album that will get many spins in my CD player.

Standout Tracks: Distant Pale Future, Shallow, Feilds of the Dead, Elysium Dream, Dead or Dreaming, Cyber Messiah

5.0 out of 5 stars Who said metal can't be beautiful, April 24, 2003
This review is from: Dead Or Dreaming (Audio CD)
I grew up on bands like Metallica and Megadeth. I loved the heavy metal sound. At the same time though I was discovering bands like Dream Theater and Queensr˙che and already a fan of Rush. Not as heavy but more complex than "Heavy Metal" music. I loved both so much, I'd wish a day would come when someone could successfully combine the two sounds into one. I find this with Into Eternity. A unique band with a unique album. From keyboards to death vocals, you get a little bit of everything with this album. I suggest this to any metal lover. 5˝ stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative mixture of progressive metal and death metal!, December 25, 2002

Canadian band Into Eternity have provided us with an extremely original and creative blend of progressive metal, death metal, hardcore, thrash and more with their release "Dead or Dreaming". Everyone in the band sings, and they utilize a variety of vocal styles. Most of the album features melodic clean vocals. Into Eternity also has a knack at creating excellent vocal harmonies which are often absent in metal. The other main vocal component are the harsh death vocals. This provides additional texture and aggression. This band toggles between the styles effortlessly and with great contrast. However, my one complaint, despite the skill and originality in the vocal department, is that the vocalists themselves are not very distinctive. Perhaps time will develope vocals with more passion and character.

The music is complex, heavy, progressive metal with melodic death, thrash and hardcore influences. It is always changing directions and shifting styles. This is time-signature madness, with the songs always shifting gears and providing hectic metal madness. There are even some acoustic and classical interludes in the songs. This is an album that balances beauty and brutality to create a stunning mixture of metal bliss.

My favorite tracks would be the almost-poppy "Unholy" and the utterly brutal album closer "Identity".

This album may be a bit rough, but there are tons of ideas crammed into this album. With more experience, Into Eternity may turn out to be one of the most significant bands in Metal. They certainly have created a trademark sound that defies categorization.

5.0 out of 5 stars Into Eternity - The Next Advance in Metal, July 4, 2003

Into Eternity's "Dead or Dreaming" is a mixture of many styles of rock music including Prog rock, death metal, hardcore, and maybe even black metal in a way, if you have a thought process as complex as me =). Into Eternity goes from the melodic Old school sounds of the songs "Unholy" , and "Dead or Dreaming" to, heavy riffs of "Aboslution of the Soul", and "Selling God". The Guitarists have very melodic breakdowns/solos in their music a long with the trio of singers that give Into Eternity a new sound in Metal.

Really awesome album. Into Eternity is unlike the newer metal bands of today. Maybe that's cause they actually play metal. Anyway before I had ever heard of them I saw them live at a Hate Eternal concert. I was so impressed by their performance at the concert I had to buy the cd. I wasn't disapointed.
