Book Description

Dead Drop: A Lawson Vampire Bonus Story (Includes a sneak peek of The Kensei!)

Meet Lawson. A cynical, wise-cracking vampire charged with protecting the Balance between vampires and humans, he is part cop, part spy, and part commando—a James Bond with fangs. Lawson mixes shrewd cunning with unmatched lethality to get his job done. He tries his best to dismantle conspiracies, dispatch bad guys, and live long enough to get home.

This time, Lawson has been given an easy assignment, a "dead drop." That is until an old enemy returns…

In Jon F. Merz's novel The Kensei, a battle-weary Lawson heads to Japan for a little rest and some advanced ninja training. But he no sooner steps off the plane than lands in the midst of a Yakuza turf war orchestrated by a shadowy figure known as the Kensei. With the help of Talya, a former KGB-assassin, Lawson must put a stop to the Kensei's organ trafficking networks, prevent the creation of an army of vampire-human hybrids, and save his own skin in the process.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is how you write a short story February 27, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm not usually a big fan of short stories. It's hard to reach a balance of story elements and character in such a short amount of space. But not only did Merz succeed in Dead Drop, he succeeded in hooking me into the series. It's a good quick read that left me wanting more. If you haven't read any of the author's Lawson Vampire series, this is a great introduction. Just be forewarned, they're addictive!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Potential April 4, 2011
By Suzanne
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read the reviews and knew this was a short story, however when I read a "short story" I expect a beginning, middle and ending. This is just a preview, nothing is resolved. Would love to read more. Is there more? I don't have the answer to this question.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just enough to know you want more July 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This eBook consists of one short story and a preview of a novel. I don't normally read vampire stories but this was a good introduction to the work of a fine writer. The writing's tight, clean, mature. I'll be checking out the others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great intro to series February 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was a great way to introduce people to the series. It was long enough to form an opinion unlike most samples. I'm interested in following the series after this. I like the main character, and the plot. It is a great urban fantasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fixer February 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Lawson is a "Fixer", someone that helps keep the vampire race concealed from the humans. This short story is well worth vampire fans time, the story gives the hero the background going fourth and has a mixer of Japanese culture that makes you want more. If you don't like action, then this story is not for you; because Lawson is a kick ass kind of man in all the right ways. I also appreciate the concept of how the vampires evolved, they came into being from a past belief of humans who drank the blood of mighty animals they killed to gain their strength (the vampires used this concept to evolve as well); haven't heard of that in any other vamp books. :-) Also, the way a vampire can be killed is like no other I have read about either; and that was a refreshing thing as well. I think that I will pick up the full story this week.

3.0 out of 5 stars A preview May 30, 2011
By NancyJ
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was an intriguing preview, but the author suggested it was a story. That turned out to be okay as it was enjoyable for what it was with a different story line. Creative and provacative.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Lawson March 4, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I started reading this short story while in the waiting room at the doctor's office. As I got farther into it I kept finding myself hoping that the call back to the exam room would be delayed. I wanted to finish this story. I got my wish. It's a taut tale, with nothing wasted. Lots of action. It's a great introduction to Merz's character Lawson -- who, I think, can be best described as a vampire cop. I'd never read any of Merz's series, but that didn't matter here. He does a great job of placing the new reader into his world without wasting time or words. The thing that I liked best -- and, after reading the beginning of the first Lawson book, a strength of Merz's as a writer -- is the dialogue. There is a natural feel to it. These are genuine exchanges, something that's not easy to write. So check it out.

More About the Author

My name is Jon F. Merz. I'm an entertainer. I give people an escape from their daily lives - whether it's for an hour, a few minutes, or days at a stretch.

Within the worlds that I've created over the course of more than two dozen novels, novellas, and countless short stories, you'll find yourself whisked away to places that defy the conventional, straddle the realms that we cannot always see, and highlight the violent struggles of good versus evil. When you choose to lose yourself in the stories that I write, you're buying a ticket on a nonstop thrill ride that lasts as long as you keep reading and then lingers for a long time afterward - or at least until you pick up my next book.

It's my job to deliver fun, thrills, excitement, suspense, and the kind of characters you always wanted to meet but never knew how. It's a job I love and one I take very seriously.

Because I love giving people an escape so much, I'm also producing my own television series with the help of one of my best friends, Jaime Hassett. Together, we've assembled a fantastic team of actors and crew and we'll be filming the first of many TV/film properties in the Fall of 2011. THE FIXER is our first project, based on my hardboiled supernatural espionage Lawson series. You'll definitely want to check that out. The official website is here:

I also post news & info for writers under the hashtag #wintel out on Twitter.

Let's face it: there are a LOT of vampire series out there. But none of them are like Lawson. My vampires aren't undead; they're a living race that has evolved in secret alongside humanity for generations. Lawson works as a Fixer - it's his job to keep the existence of his race a secret and he does this by eliminating anything or anyone that threatens to expose that secret. He's cynical, jaded, sarcastic, and conflicted. He's also extremely lethal. I happen to think you'll like him. A LOT. The series is always expanding, but for now, here are the adventures to-date: (blue covers are novels, green covers are novellas, and red covers are short stories)

Here are just a few of the other things I've written. Not shown here are the eleven installments I wrote in the international bestselling series ROGUE ANGEL for Harlequin/Gold Eagle. If you buy a Rogue Angel novel, check the copyright page and if says "Thanks to Jon F. Merz for his/her contribution to this work," it means I wrote the whole thing.

I'm a big ol' fan-o-phile. I love my readers - without you I wouldn't have a career and I make sure I talk to as many of you as I can. I'm not some recluse who spends all his time at the keyboard living in anonymity. I want to hear from you. I want to talk to you. I love answering questions. So below, you'll find a list of places that I hang out. Check me out there and say hello.

In my past, I served with the US Air Force, did some government work, private sector protection stuff, and generally lived through some harrowing encounters. These days, I'm excited to be able to do what I love. I have a wonderful wife and two amazing sons. I'm also a lifelong martial artist with over 27 years of training in various styles including 20 years in my current style Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu/Ninjutsu. I'm fortunate to have one of the best teachers around - Mr. Mark Davis of the Boston Martial Arts Center and his instruction has saved my life numerous times.

That's about it in a nutshell. Make sure you sign up for my FREE newsletter at and I hope you have a great time reading my work. Don't forget to stay in touch!
