Keith Calder, itinerant gunsmith and shooting instructor, is also a rascal with a total disregard for the law and a skilled poacher of birds of both varieties. Calder is a guest at a shoot in the Scottish Borders when one of the syndicate members dies - apparently by accident, but a bullet is found in his body. Calder has a personal interest in the case, which deepens when the brother of his current girlfriend is arrested and charged with the murder. Calder begins to make his own enquiries but he and Molly find themselves in danger.

This is the first of many adventures we share with gunsmith (and retired rogue) Keith Calder. As we meet him, he is approaching the sleepy little Scottish town of Newton Lauder, living a gypsy lifestyle of itinerant gunsmith and shooting instructor. In quick order see a hunt, a murder, a wedding, a mistaken arrest, and a host of other events with a background of the Scottish sport shooting world. Be warned, if you read this one, you will not rest until you find and read all the other stories about Keith and the other characters populating Newton-Lauder.
