No Sophmore Slump Here!!!,
By PadreRat (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dead Girls Don't Wear Diamonds (Blackbird Sisters Mysteries, No. 2) (Paperback)
Nancy Martin's second book in the Blackbird series is another winner. We pick up the story the next fall. Libby is close to her due date, Emma has decided to buy a horse and train herself, and Nora gets involved in another murder. At a celebration party for Oliver Cooper (He was nominated for the next Department of Transportation Secretary), Nora runs into her college boyfriend, Flan Cooper. After an innocent private talk, Flan's wife, Laura, finds them and thinks the worst. Nora talks to Laura and finds out she and Flan are having trouble. During their conversation, Nora notices that Laura has changed her appearance to resemble her. Nora's talk to Laura ends with the understanding that Nora is not interested in Flan any longer. The next day, Emma tells Nora that Laura was found dead...an apparent suicide. Flan asks Nora for help; since he can't image his wife would kill herself and realized that he is the prime suspect. Nora starts to snoop around and gets a picture of Laura that she can't believe. Laura is known with the estate crowd as a jewelry thief. There is a new cast of supporting characters, which give this book a different flavor than the last. They are still eccentric so you'll be entertained. Michael is around and ends up helping Nora with her mad capers. This was a great second story with a stronger mystery than the first novel. I can't wait for the next story.

Philadelphia Society Cozy Mystery Series,
By --corinne-- (Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dead Girls Don't Wear Diamonds (Blackbird Sisters Mysteries, No. 2) (Paperback)
In Nancy Martin's second installment to her Blackbird Sisters cozy mystery series, newly-minted society columnist & middle red-headed Blackbird sister Nora attends the party anticipating the appointment of her old college beau's father as the next Secretary of the Department of Transportation. The plot thickens when a body is found in their koi pool the next day.In my opinion, "Dead Girls" read more quickly than the first Blackbird Sister mystery "How to Murder a Millionaire." I looove the knowledge and references to Philadelphia high society rules and parties in this series. The sister's characterizations are nuanced; Mafia don's prodigal son Michael Abruzzo sizzles as Nora's on-again, off-again romantic interest. This is a fun, light-hearted romp through Philadelphia social soirees. Nancy Martin's series is as much fun as Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. Highly recommended.

the perfect bright and light summer read,

This review is from: Dead Girls Don't Wear Diamonds (Blackbird Sisters Mysteries, No. 2) (Paperback)
I haven't had this much fun since Martin's last mystery, How to Murder a Millionaire. Her newest frothy concoction, Dead Girls Don't Wear Diamonds, features the same delightful heroine, Nora Blackbird, the high-society amateur detective whose wit and charm make her everyone's ideal best friend. There's also a suspenseful mystery, a gallery of colorful, sharply drawn supporting characters and a wealth of hilariously wicked social observations. All in all, the ideal light and fun summer read.

brash, flaming and sassy amateur sleuth mystery,
This review is from: Dead Girls Don't Wear Diamonds (Blackbird Sisters Mysteries, No. 2) (Paperback)
Growing up wealthy made it hard for Nora Blackbird to survive when her parents went through the family fortune, skipped town, and began living the high life in a foreign country using funds "borrowed" from friends. Keeping Blackbird Farm is important to Nora so much so that she sold some acreage to a mobster's son who built a used car lot on the property. She now works as a society columnist for the Philadelphia Intelligencer which means going to a lot of parties hosted by friends.Oliver Cooper, who has been nominated as the Secretary of the Department of Transportation, and his trophy wife Doe, throw the latest social event attended by Nora. Nora is alone with her first love Flan Cooper until his wife Laura catches them and causes a public scene. The next day Laura is found dead with Flan, who was having marital difficulties, the prime suspect and Nora a close second. With her freedom at stake and a desire to clear her reputation and that of Flan's, Nora embarks on her own investigation against a murderer not hesitant to kill again. DEAD GIRLS DON'T WEAR DIAMONDS is a brash, flaming and sassy amateur sleuth mystery staring a person trying to be the voice of reason yet always finds herself up to her ears in trouble and ridiculous predicaments. The heroine's relationship with the mobster's son will make Nancy Martin's latest mystery have cross over appeal to romance fans. This is the perfect novel to take to the beach, a book that is light, breezy, and pure fun. Harriet Klausner

Nancy Martin scores again!,

I didn't think Ms. Martin could ever top her first book, "How To Murder a Millionaire", but this latest installment of the hilarious adventures of the Blackbird Sisters is even more delicious than the last one. The vintage clothes, the hunky and slightly dangerous boy friend, the laugh-out-loud humor, the well-drawn characters and the authentic settings all combine for a fabulous read.

Witty and Charming Series,

This review is from: Dead Girls Don't Wear Diamonds (Blackbird Sisters Mysteries, No. 2) (Paperback)
The second book in the Blackbird Sisters' mystery series finds Nora Blackbird escalating her romance with Mick; investigating jewelry thefts; delivering babies (and contemplating one of her own?); solving murders; and trying to clear an old flame - Flan Cooper's name.Nancy Martin does it again with lots of wit and great dialogue. The characters are funny and somewhat dysfunctional. My one criticism (and it's a big one) which only made me give it 4 stars was when Nora shouts out that one threatening word as she is fighting for her life....."polyester!" Pleaassse. There is a point where too much wit makes it absurd. And Nancy Martin's editors should have stopped her with that one. In spite of this absurdity, I will definitely read the next Blackbird Sisters book. On a positive note, one area that Ms. Martin explains very well in this second book is why Nora has never learned to drive.

Nancy Martin's second Blackbird Sisters book is a real diamond in itself. Nora Blackbird and her wacky sisters are at it again running amok amongst the Philadelphia Blueblood set. I am totally hooked on these books, and can't wait for number three.

Dead Girls Don't Wear Diamonds,

When Nora Blackbird is informed that the wife of her college sweetheart committed suicide by drowning herslef in the family pool she feels an overwhelming sense of de ja vu. She knows that Laura did not commit suicide and that somehow she is going to be forced to investigate this murder on her own once again. Laura who Nora had just spent time with the night before her death was having trouble in her marriage and was trying to recreate herslef by trying to look exactally like her husbands first love, Nora Blackbird. Being that she and Laura openly argued at a party the night before Nora knows that her name will soon appear on the suspect list and she therefore must try to solve this before she becomes the no. 1 suspect! To complicate matters Laura was known around town as the local jewel thief and had countless enemies all of whom are suspects in Nora's eyes.
Nancy Martin once again charms us with a lighthearted and fun look into the lives of the hilarious Blackbird sisters and produces a mystery that never takes itself too seriously and is very entertaining. I thouroughly enjoy this series and hope that we see much more of the Blackbird sisters in the future!

This was a delightful book. It was the first of Ms. Martin's that I have read. I will certainly go back and read her first "Blackbird" mystery and have already purchased the third one. I was hooked from the beginning and enjoyed every page. Get this one and you will not be sorry.
