2.0 out of 5 stars More of the same (good or bad?) May 23, 2013
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
There's a large chance that those of you reading these reviews and are considering purchasing this game have already played the previous title. I'm breaking up my review into 6 categories for the sake of simplicity.

A direct sequel to the original Dead Island, the story continues for the four main characters, as well as a new Hand-to-Hand specialist. From the Jungles flooded rivers to the dilapidated city streets, you'll find the secret behind the zombie outbreak that took over the resort islands of Banoi and Palanai.

The physics engine and the graphics do not show any improvement exactly, but then again, they were more or less pretty good to begin with: the everything that needs to be beautiful is, and every undead or otherwise disgusting texture is present in sick* detail. Excessive use of explosives and/or flares can cause a bit of a lag. The sound is as good as ever, with eerie zombie wails always keeping you on edge, and synth heavy music that nicely keeps the chills going down yours spine. Another small tweak that I enjoyed is that weapons that have been customized with some sort of FLAME mod now give off ambient light in the darkness, plus being able to toss flares. That flashlight was a joke, right?

On top of importing already leveled up characters onto a new game, there is also the option of starting over fresh and choosing a customizable level-up structure for your character based on TOUGH, SURVIVALIST, BALANCED, or CUSTOM tiers. These pertain mostly to the non character-specific power-ups, but some deviations may be present.

4.0 out of 5 stars and I loved it. I only loved it because I liked ... November 8, 2014
I remember getting the first Dead Island game for christmas about 3 years ago, and I loved it. I only loved it because I liked chopping up zombies, not for it's gameplay. With Riptide, it was about both. This game is pretty amazing, and a bit challenging at times. I used to rage quit with the first game, only because I hated having to focus on a million different quests and side quests that were going on at the same time, but hey, I was 13 and I liked simple games. I've definitely improved. OK, lets break this down know

The graphics in Riptide are almost exactly the same as the original Dead Island. I usually don't judge graphics in video games, because I really didn't care if the picture quality was HD or not, but in this game, I did notice it's quality. A little pixelated at some times, only because of the excessive use of explosions and what not. Overall, I don't give 2 s***s, I liked it.

AUDIO 9/10

The audio wasn't half bad. It's like your standard audio in a game. Maybe just a hint better than Dead Island the original. Sounds really cool with surround sound. Actually everything sounds cool with surround sound.

The gameplay, as I said before, can get a little pixelated (excessive explosions/flares). The story pretty much begins where the original ends. It's a great story, and wickedly fun to find and upgrade weapons. The zombies, at some points, can get freaking hard to kill. They put so many dead in one little place, and they all charge at you and kill you quickly. It took me 2 days to beat this game, and I probably died over 360 times. But I found that if you use your skill points and upgrade weapons, it takes them out easily.

Overall, this game is super fun, I think the critics were hard on it. It's not too hard, but not too easy. It's really great. I highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much improved? No. Fun as the first? YES! May 21, 2013
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Look, don't go into this expecting big changes. There are slight weapon menu improvements and a few things added to the skill trees, however. Plus they added quests you can do to strengthen your team, which is cool because I wasn't even aware I had a team in the first D.I. until they showed up out of nowhere in the cutscenes and confused the heck out of me and seemed this installment makes them more a part of the story.

Storyline is a bit more intriguing.

It's totally awesome you can import your first D.I. character into Riptide with all his/her levels and skills intact >>>BUT<<<...If you play multiplayer and try to play with someone who is just starting from the beginning (say...level 2 to your level 64) keep in mind the zombies will be your level, and the beginning level player will have no chance. Plus, if you try to trade weapons with a much lower-level's pretty much useless because they won't be able to use them. Plus how much fun is it playing with someone who is stealing all the action because they kick zombie butt into next year? The lower player will just be standing there pretty much useless.

Multiplayer is still annoying and lacking. I really hate that you have to divy up the spoils...if you get selfish jerk of a player in your crew who decides to take all the good items you're screwed. If you are playing with friends and have a headphone/mic and can talk to each other to negotiate the spoils it's a little different. AND...the trade menu is still confusing to me.

I had fun with the first D.I. and I had as much fun with this one.
