More About the Author

Writing has always been in my blood. Since the age of thirteen, when I coauthored a cheesy romance novel in a spiral bound notebook, I knew I wanted to pursue writing as a career. But somewhere along the way, I lost my voice. Sure I could craft a witty email or write marketing copy for other authors, as I did in a previous job, but to write that great American novel seemed just out of reach.

As is often happens, life simply got in the way. I got married, had three children, and adopted a black Labrador. As a stay-at-home mom, I was lucky to get an hour a day to myself. And when I found those few precious minutes, they were spent reading a good book. A voracious reader, I've been researching the mystery and suspense genres for more than two decades.

It was in my search for my own identity after staying home with the kids that ultimately lead me back to my love of writing. My first mystery novel, "Dead Like Me," debuted in November 2012. The manuscript won a 2011 Florida Writers Association Royal Palm Literary Award. It was also named a semi-finalist in the mystery category of The Kindle Book Review's 2013 Best Indie Book Award competition.

I'm currently writing the second book in the Detective Kate Springer series. Check my blog out to see where I am on my writing journey.

You can tell by reading this book that she knows and loves each character and wants to introduce them to the reader.

My source for the book: Paperback provided by author in exchange for honest review

WHAT I LIKED:

This was completely beyond the realm of what I normally read. I don't usually care for first person and I generally prefer romance. That being said, this book hooked me from the very first chapter. It was exciting, kept me on the edge of my seat, and I adored the characters. There was plenty of humor and sarcasm to the dialect and Kate's personality was amazing. It is rare that I can so completely drop into a book as fast as I did with Dead Like Me.

Life has been hectic and I couldn't always find time to read, but this was one of those stories that stuck with you, poking at you to squeeze in 10 minutes to find out what happens next. The relationship between Kate and Patrick was very well done and it was obvious how much they cared about each other. All in all, this book had some of the best characters I've read in a while and had a great plot.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:

There really wasn't anything I didn't like. Kate keeps a secret from her partner through the bulk of the story and while I understood her reasons, there were times that I wanted to reach into the pages and shake her and say "Patrick will understand!! Tell him!!" That being said, I'm glad Kelly Miller approached things the way she did.

OVERALL VERDICT: 5/5 Blue Duckies!!!

This was a phenomenal book and I CANNOT wait to see more from this author. If you're looking for a fantastic mystery on par with the mysteries of J.D. Robb (just without the romance), definitely check out this book!!

Read straight through it a a few hours. Fast paced if a little predictable. Would recommend it for a fill in between something a little more brain taxing. Reads a little like a TV crime drama but keeps you guessing as to how she will pull it all together in the end.

What a great book. I could not put it down. The author has such wonderful insight into her characters thoughts and emotions and really connects with her readers. I am looking forward to more Kelly Miller books!

This was a decent effort for a beginner--much better than most Kindle freebies. The author did a great job explaining the shame and confusion felt by victims of child sexual abuse. BUT--and this is a biggie--there were ridiculous plot errors, the most obvious one being the character's failure to report her rapist's identity. For all her tough cop talk she showed incredible naiveté in dismissing him as a suspect just because he seemed too frail. I'm not a cop and even I saw through that. Maybe the author needs to go read some more crime novels.

Last but definitely not least is the author's apparent ignorance of very basic rules of grammar and punctuation. She thanks a whole bunch of people in her acknowledgements; is it possible not one of those people noticed her rampant abuse/misuse of commas, semi-colons, and that most misunderstood of punctuation marks: the Apostrophe? Ah well, that's why writers have editors. Hopefully she'll find a good one and reach her full potential.

I downloaded this book when it was free. It was a great story to take to bed with me, to help me fall asleep faster.
The main protagonist was a little to whiny for my taste, and the character of her partner was not sufficiently developed.
And then there was a colleague that spilled the beans to the press - but never got called on it.

I don't know who decides on the prices of books, but currently the Kindle version sells for $7.99.
Considering you can buy Kindle books by established authors like Michael Conolly, Kay Hooper, Scott Turow and others for only a dollar more, why would anyone spent that much on an unknown writer? It's not a literary masterpiece by all means.
Most first timers sell their books for anywhere between $0.99 and $2.99, which I think is a lot more realistic.
(I know this part has nothing to do with the content of the book - it just caught me by surprise).

When I first started reading this book, I thought it was a crime/detective/who done it type book with another hard-as -nails woman detective. This book is so much more than that. Some authors write from the head and some from the heart. I can always tell the difference. This author writes from the heart and the book brought tears to my eyes. She obviously has an understanding of the psychodynamics of a pedophile. She understands the heart of the child who has been sexually abused and how it affects that child as an adult woman.

Not only did my intellect get challenged. My emotions went haywire. Thank you so much, Ms. Miller.

This author could be the next Karin Slaughter! Really good read. I enjoyed the tough and damaged female detective and her male sidekick; the tension increased as they tried to find the killer of a 13 year old girl- the mom? the boyfriend? had she been sexually abused? Read it and see! As it was a kindle freeby I reckon I hit pay dirt. I'll definitely look out for more by Kelly Miller.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Not too in-depth about the supporting characters, I was still really curious to see how this would end. Life after child abuse, revenge, redemption, and the message about taking your own life back resonated for me. Not particularly graphic, though I wouldn't recommend this book for young readers due to the subject matter.
