Book Description

Dead on Ice is the first installment of Lauren Carr’s new series (Lovers in Crime) featuring Hancock County Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Thornton and Pennsylvania State Police homicide detective Cameron Gates.

Spunky Cameron Gates is tasked with solving the murder of Cherry Pickens, a legendary star of pornographic films, whose body turns up in an abandoned freezer. The case has a personal connection to her lover, Joshua Thornton, because the freezer was located in his cousin’s basement. It doesn’t take long for their investigation to reveal that the risqué star’s roots were buried in their rural Ohio Valley community, something that Cherry had kept off her show business bio. She should have kept her hometown off her road map, too—because when this starlet came running home from the mob, it proved to be a fatal homecoming.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dead on ice May 21, 2013
Elderly Pennsylvania State lawyer Albert Gordon dies quietly in his rural home - and is found under a mound of junk that the compulsive hoarder had collected, unknown to his neighbours. The Hookstown police get involved when the townsfolk narrowly escape death on cleanup day - a bomb has been planted in the cellar, which explodes.

Local police detective Cameron has her hands full when the body of a woman is discovered hidden in a freezer in the cellar. This porn star named Cherry Pickens disappeared in the 1980s. Cameron's boyfriend is local prosecuting attorney Joshua, widowed. Between his kids and her large black and white Maine Coon cat, which draws shrieks of 'Skunk!' when people notice it, their personal life is hectic. Joshua is also executor to the Gordon estate so Cameron shares case information. The dead woman's fingerprints prove that her real name was Cheryl Smith, a girl who left Hookstown decades ago after she was implicated in the disappearance of another girl in a bout of jealousy.

DEAD ON ICE feels hard to get into: scenes switch and townsfolk are introduced in large numbers at the start; it was hard to figure who the main protagonists were. Only when matters settled down to a straight investigation did I settle in the location. After that the detective work seems solid and the cold cases which arise are linked to the brooding presence of a grudge. "Loyalties have a way of dissolving over the years," comments an older detective, and gradually the truth will out. The couple visit a computer shop and a wealthy winery, a small homestead and a Sunday school class. But matters quickly turn bad, with a shooting, arson and assaults muddying the waters.

DEAD ON ICE is Lauren Carr's sixth mystery and she has filled it with twists and turns. Perhaps the most enjoyable character for me is the large cat, Irving; he livens up many scenes and his meeting with an actual skunk dismays all concerned.

3.0 out of 5 stars I liked her other books better :) January 6, 2013
When poor Albert was found dead in his house under piles and piles of magazines and other things he couldn't throw away, an investigation began. The investigation didn't begin just because of Albert's death but because a dead body was found in the freezer of his basement. A body of someone who disappeared more than 20 years ago.

The investigation went from one character to another, and when I thought I had it figured out it turned out I was wrong each time....I didn't even guess the real murderer in the end. That being said, there were so many characters in this book that I really couldn't keep track of who was who.

The characters were comical in their own ways and likeable, though. I would consider this book to have more of a theme of comedy and love along with an embezzlement going on in the middle of everything instead of a murder.

I like Ms. Carr's books about Mac Faraday much more than these characters, but perhaps they need to grow on me. 3.5/5

I received this book free of charge without compensation from the author in exchange for an honest review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Author's New Series Kick-Off Book May 12, 2013
By Janet
Format:Kindle Edition
I have never read a Lauren Carr book, but having read this book, evidently the first in a series, I will be reading more.
Evidently the main characters Joshua (small town DA) and Cameron (Local law enforcement, love interest) were introduced in a prior series. I will have to backtrack through the author's catalog and discover their roots. I liked both characters. Joshua is a widower with mostly grown children, strongly linked to the town, having grown up there, and has a well developed sense of humor. He puts up with Cameron's Skunk Twin cat, the evil Irving (Irving definitely brings the funny, and I like that!.
The mystery was paced well, the towns "characters" believable, if not exactly likeable, and the dialogue suited me. I am glad to have discovered a writer who doesn't telegraph their ending! I won't say that I couldn't put it down, but it did hold my interest over several days.
The only thing i found difficult was the wealth of characters introduced. Ms. Carr is probably setting the stage for the series, but it was a bit overwhelming.
*I received my copy from in exchange for an honest review.

I love reading books set in my hometown, but I love it even more when Lauren Carr fools me again. Every time I think I have it all figured out - I don't. She never disappoints.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting new series January 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Dead On Ice is the first book in the Lovers In Crime series.

Readers first met Joshua Thornton, prosecuting attorney in Hancock County, WV and Cameron Gates, homicide detective with the Pennsylvania State Police, in Shades Of Murder, a Max Faraday series by Lauren Carr.

This book, set in the present day, centers around the disappearance of 18 year old Angie Sullivan after a skating party in Hookstown, PA. Her body was found seven years later submerged in her car, in a river near Chester, WV. The case has gone cold and the principal suspect, Cheryl Smith, has gone missing.

Moving to the present day, Joshua is concerned for his cousin Albert. He has missed church and nobody has seen him for three or four days. Joshua arrives just as Cameron does. Upon entering the house they find Albert buried under a huge pile of newspapers. Albert has left all his property to his church. Members of the church are at the house trying to clean the house all when Cameron is called to the basement by Doris who has found what appears to be a bomb attached to the floor joists. Just as the last person in the house reaches safety, the house explodes. A clean up crew hired to remove the debris finds a freezer in the basement, undamaged. The police find the body of a young girl in the freezer. The body turns out to be the body of Cheryl Smith. Now Cameron need to investigate why she returned, who killed her and why did the body and freezer end up in Albert's cluttered house.

This book gives the read a very good mystery, a little romance and a little humor. Cameron's "skunk" cat, a black cat with a white stripe down it's back is absolutely hilarious.

A wonderful new series and I am looking forward to the next book.
