"And it's the grief that accompanies you",

This review is from: Dead Poem (Bonus CD) (Audio CD)
4.5 stars. This is easily the most immediately accessible of all the albums in the Rotting Christ catalog. While a continuance, more or less, from their previous effort "Triarchy of the Lost Lovers," here the sinister Greeks add a glorious mixture of Gothic keyboards and marching rhythms with the occasional guitar lick lashing out like a forked tongue adding a melodic undertone. Overall, this CD is marvellous! The drumming is interesting, the songwriting always feels like it has some place to go, and the eerie backdrop of Gothic keyboards leaves a moody impression. I actually prefer their heavier albums such as "Thy Mighty Contract" and "Khronos 666," but "A Dead Poem" feels, at times, almost ready for mainstream radio. Take that as a compliment or not, I still prefer their darker, Black Metal beginnings. However, this is still a very good album I know I will return to in the near future. This is probably the best first purchase the beginning fan can make because the songs here make an immediate impression. Later on, the more intricate sections make this album a real value. Take it easy.

Possessing Everything That Is Beautiful,
By child_of_the_jester_race "child_of_the_jester... (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews

This album is a collection of beautiful songs. Rotting Christ are a very unique band. Their rhythm is slower than most bands in this genre, and they mix it with melodies and harmonies that speak directly to your soul. Since the beginning they have worked on this sound and they have come to master it with three albums: "Triarchy of the Lost Lovers", this album "A Dead Poem" and "Sleep Of Angels". These three albums a metal fan has to get.
A Dead Poem starts of with the song "A Sorrowfull Farewell" which might be one of the more energetic songs here. However the melodic guitar riffs are present from the start. One cannot help but feel sorrow when listening to this work. The second song "Among Two Storms" might have the catchiest riffs in this album followed by a mighty chorus. Beautiful. The next song, is called like the album "A Dead Poem". It possese everything that an immortal song has to have. It is one of my favourite song here. Starts soft and builds into a massive riffs that can easely hit you so hard as to cry. By now you must already be hooked to this amazing work of art. These first three songs already make this album an epic. But wait... there is so much more. The rest of the album follows in the same steps. My favourite songs are the title track, "A Dead Poem", "Semigod" and "As If By Magic". Amazing tunes. Any of those tracks will get you hooked to this band. Other songs which are above average are "Out of Spirits" and the instrumental called "Ten Miles High". However unlike other bands in the melodic death metal style this instrumental song does not have crazy guitar work. It is basically a song without singing. Very beautiful though. If you love Melodic Death Metal actually if you love any metal do yourself a favour, don't look at their name (as it those not repressent this band well) and get this album, not only will you not regret it but you will be glad. You will then be forced by you unconscious self to get your hands on their other two amazing albums, "Triarchy of the Lost Lovers" and "Sleep of Angels".

Awesome Album!!,

This Album has excelent songs, creating a dark atmosphere, I would define their style as Black/dark Metal, although they have some Gothic influences, they sound a little like old Moonspell, but unlike Moonspell i think Rotting Christ have stayed true to their roots. and for those who don't think the same just listen to Moonspell's last album and see how they've sold out.

A Dead Poem,

Rotting Christ are known more for the controversy of their name rather than their music. Which is too bad considering how good their music actually is. Early albums from Doom bands such as Sentenced and Amorphis mixed with a bit of Death Metal is the best way I can think of to describe it. Vocals are done in the sort-of-but-not-quite Death Metal style reminiscent of early Paradise Lost and early Anathema only a bit more gutteral. the riffs switch from Doom to other styles seemlessly which results in a brutal, almost straight-forward metal sound with an underlying current of majesty and atmosphere. The drums and bass are get the job done but aren't anything spectacular. Overall this is one of those albums just about anyone can enjoy. I can't really compare to the rest of their catalog because this is my first Rotting Christ album but I've heard from people that other releases are quite different. Don't let the name fool into thinking this is just another lame gore and guts Satan band.

GREEK GODS OF BLACK METAL ARE BACK FOR THE ATTACK!!!,
By

Finally, Rotting Christ has returned to their roots in one of the blackest albums of the century! They have definitely set the standard for metal in Europe. The overall feel of the album is as if you are walking into a dark abyss with the mystery of spirits capturing your soul. Their melodic madness of darkness will make your skin crawl. It takes a few listens to get into the record, but once it grabs you it surprises you everytime you listen with undertones of 'symphonic black metal.' Definitely recommended. This will easily turn into your favorite album. ALL HAIL THE GREEK GODS OF BLACK METAL!

a most rewarding listen,

i'm glad a lot of people are missing on this. let them stay mired into the mainstream sludge until they rot. after all they wont understand the music and would even ban it before even giving it a try, because of the band's name. anyway, i personally didnt 'get it' from the first listen. this particular album has many hidden niceties that unveil at every new listen. it has the rare power of evoking (to me at least) the smell of incense, cold & damp cavernous places, and an ancient darkness (if such a figure can be expressed in writing). i came to truely appreciate this after hearing it for maybe 7 or 8 times. maybe i'm thick minded after all, but anyway i dont expect people to like this album at once but in case you appreciate good music under all its forms, you will ultimately fall in love with this truely mystical piece of work.
main highlights are: among two storms, a dead poem, as if by magic, full color is the night, semigod, between times and Ira incensus. check out these equally good albums by the rotting dudes: triarchy of the lost lovers, thy mighty contract.

real chops here,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dead Poem (Bonus CD) (Audio CD)
rotting christ delivers the goods again. For those put out by the name and wallowing in putrid metallica like garbage, its to bad. Cause, above the mounds of filth out there today, rotting christ stands tall, bringing their brand of heavy chops to those who are lucky enough to hear. Put down the deftones and whatever else passes for metal these days and do yourself a favour. Right now. Order this record.

very dark album, produced by an excellent keyboardist,

This album is just very dark, and shows what symphonic black metal is really like. There's nothing wrong with the name, plus they aren't even the most extreme metal band. The keyboards in his album just create the beauty of this album, but isn't necasarily one of the lead instruments, which i'd like it to be. The guitar work on this record is quite good, very Maiden, but of course heavier! The best part to the album are the last three tracks.

Shame,

It's a shame for a band that creates dark and beautiful music like Rotting Christ not to have good support and right distribution because of their ( silly ? ) name .....
