five stars,

This review is from: Dead Presidents: Music From The Motion Picture, Volume II (Audio CD)
In my opinion, many 70's R&B compilations (Pure Funk 1 & 2, etc.) tend to focus heavily on funk and danceability, often at the expense of many slower but beautiful soul songs. I'm not one to dispute the greatness of funk or James Brown (whose 2 tracks on this album are both great) but it is nice to see a compilation of slower and equally great soul songs. Anyhow, I strongly reccomend the album, maybe even more than the first volume of the Dead Presidents soundtrack. My only qualm is that it includes a version of "we people who are darker than blue" from the early 90's rather than the original version from the album "Curtis")

Love this soundtrack. If you're looking for a good conglomeration of 60's and 70's r and b (soul) music, this soundtrack will provide it. However, I think Volume I has the better hits. Still a good purchase.

in many cases, films about the 1960s and 1970s have been a limited experience because they are coming from a limited perspective. and so much of the music of these decades gets ignored.
this is not the cast with 'dead presidents'. personally, i could have taken or left the story behind because i know that somewhere in this world there is an experience of this time that is more joyous than this. but before i get nailed, i want to say that the film is still visually exciting and is well acted. but what is REALLY exciting to me is this soundtrack. isaac hayes, the dramatics, danny elfman's closing track--it's all so visceral and well selected. just hearing the music made me remember the men and women i used to see when i was a kid. they may have wanted the same things as the characters in the film and come to the same end. the music helped bring the period to life so much more than any other element of the film.

I ENJOY LISTENING OLD SCHOOL R&B. IT SET A MOOD IN THE ROOM WHEN I LISTEN TO ALL THE SONGS.
