My Grandfather,
This review is from: Dead River Rough Cut Director's Cut (DVD)
I was just looking around and found dead river rough cut, and was curious what people thought of the movie that my grandfather, Bob Wagg and his best friend, Walter Lane, made. I would also like to add that listening to Walter recite the cremation of Sam McGee in person when I was little was very interesting. I watch my grandfathers movie all the time and love hearing Walter recite that everytime. Even though it was much betta in person. I'm glad that before they both passed on they were able to get this movie made. I'll close now but wanted everyone to know I appreciate their good reviews.

This film is not everyone's cup of tea. Two Maine backwoodsmen, a bit "woods-queer" as exteme rural Mainer's have been called, allow their lives to be filmed and their opinions to be heard. The greatest social event, involving 4 people, is the slautering of a pig. From then on we learn about working oxen in the woods, making snowshoes, trapping beaver and rural Maine in the heart of winter. The notes about the production and the interview of one of the men years later are well worth watching in the special features. So is the recitation, from memory of "The Cremation of Sam McGee." Aside from the general warning that this is not for the squemish or oversensitive (particularly women, who take some hard hits as a species) this is a good study of the life of these hard working recluses.

The lifestyle and humor indicate what a life in the bush is really like. The Maine woods have always been the domain of unique characters, and in this dvd you get two of them. Highly recommended.

This DVD was discribed to me as "the most requested DVD in the Maine prison system." Had to buy it. The movie was put together by a couple of guys from the "Forks" in Maine. They followed Bob Wagg and Walter Lane for a couple of winters of beaver trapping in the wilderness of upstate Maine. Bob and Walter are two individuals you will want to have breakfast with at the Forks. Very well edited. You will watch the whole movie with a grin on your face. The directors comments about the movie are also entertaining.

A friend of mine lent me this DVD. Within minutes of watching the video and all of the special features, I was online ordering 2 copies to send to family members. As others have said - the film is not for the squeamish or the easily offended, but this is true backcountry Maine - a Maine that so few from away have ever seen (or would want to see, I suspect). I suspect there are still a few guys like Walter and Bob to be found in the Maine woods, but they are getting rarer and rarer. I have no doubt that members of my family will see themselves reflected in Bob and Walter!!

This is my favorite movie of all times. You have to put your self aside for a while and just take in this movie. Yes, they kill a pig and yes they are offensive to women at times, but if you can get over that enjoy. The movie teaches you humility, and sets you back to take a look at your own life and realize how important the little things are. I watch this movie every Sunday, it's kind of my church. It is fun to watch two souls live the way that they wanted to. Two amazing souls who have since passed on leaving this footprint for the rest of us to examine.Enjoy

Back-woods Maine anyone ? A delightful look into the lives of two Maine trappers. Some of the best commentary on work, women, and dentistry that I've ever heard. The perfect gift for the Mainer in your life.

Maine - The Way Life Should Be,
This review is from: Dead River Rough Cut Director's Cut (DVD)
Just back from the North Woods of Maine from our annual guys' weekend, where we once again screened Dead River. What a great view on simple living and honest opinions of Mainers! I'm in here to order DVDs of the film as our VHS copy is getting old from over-viewing. If you don't like the film for its honesty and natural beauty alone, then you didn't deserve to watch it.

This reminds me of the days when I was much younger, and my dad was still alive! This was not a couple of actors! These were two, crazy men who chose to live a very simple life without the burdens of todays society. I envy them in some ways-definitely not in other ways...I thoroughly enjoyed it, as did my husband.
