Book Description

August 1997 9004106979 978-9004106970
The Dead Sea Scrolls probably represent the most significant historical manuscript discovery in recent history. In 1993 Brill published all available DSS photographs on microfilm together with an extensive guide to them. But because microfilm offers less than optimal access, all film has been transferred onto CD-ROM which mean that the digital computer technology is making such tasks as cross referencing, interpretation and comparisons much easier and faster than before. "The Dead Sea Scrolls Electronic Reference Library" project takes the form of an ongoing archive. Brill and Oxford University Press, granted exclusive rights by the Israeli Antiquities Authority to produce this CD-ROM edition of the Dead Sea Scrolls, will publish new volumes in the series on a regular basis. Volume 1, a 3 CD-ROM package, comprises over 3,500 black and white images and detailed support information. Success in scholarship today is increasingly a function of the speed and convenience of source access and interpretation. The rich material detail combined with the unprecedented manipulative capabilities of the computer mean the "DSS Electronic Reference Library "leaves all alternatives far in its wake. Optiware software System requirements: - Windows 3.1 or higher. - Processor: 486 or higher - RAM: 16Mb (minimum); 32Mb (recommended) - Monitor and graphics card: SVGA and 256 colors - 4x CD-ROM player (minimum); 32x CD-ROM player (recommended) Note: For Windows XP, a patch is necessary. Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The two discs that comprise Volume 1 provide high-resolution photographic images of all the 800 texts from the caves of Qumran (2700 photos of Dead Sea scrolls and scroll-fragments). Scroll images can be searched in a variety of ways, including by cave number, by biblical passage, by Brill microfiche reference (to the set published by Brill), by facsimile edition number, or by scholarly publications; the system allows for Boolean and proximity searching as well as truncation. The capabilities are quite remarkable (zoom, contrast, brightness ?even rotation of the image?all combine to allow excellent viewing opportunities), and considering the sophistication of the technology, the disc is relatively easy to use. Having said that, we must add that the product will be penetrable mainly by biblical scholars: the search system has been designed to serve serious, long-term study. Bottom Line: Recommended for libraries serving graduate- and postgraduate-level biblical and Jewish studies scholars.

Review

'..".a laudable research tool which exploits the manipulative powers of the computer...It will open new opportunities to study this sample of early Jewish; it will offer a new resource for studying paleography; and it will enhance textual criticism of sacred and apocryptahl texts... a first rate product...the scholarly community can look forward to the upcoming volumes.'
Douglas Mohrmann, Computers & Texts, 1998.
