5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't turn the pages fast enough
And I thought Another Life and The Flower Man were scary! The suspense in Dead Silence started from the very first page and did not let up: esculating and building a frightening situation, resolving into a terrifying climax. I read all night and continued to do so even when my vision blurred from fatigue. I couldn't put this book down until I'd finished reading it! I...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Chilling Mystery in Seattle, October 6, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Dead Silence (Mass Market Paperback)
In the movies, Seattle is usually depicted as a romantic spot ("Sleepless in Seattle,") and in soap operas as the place everyone disappears to when they're written off the show. In Anders' latest psychological suspense, the streets, alleys, houseboats, high-rise condos and the aircraft industry of the Emerald City are permeated with terror that surpasses even her first two thrillers (Another Life and The Flower Man.) Anders has a terrific sense of suspense and she is a real story teller. I didn't know who the "bad guy--" (Bad girl?) was right up until the end, and I began to glance over MY shoulder to see who might be following ME because I got so caught up in the scariness of Dead Silence. Donna Anders is surely destined to be one of America's top suspense writers, and Dead Silence proves it. Note: Do not read this book alone at night!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mind Teaser, December 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Dead Silence (Mass Market Paperback)
A major fan of psychological thrillers, I found this book to be among the top in this genre. The female protagonist, Liza MacDonough, is compelling, strong, and believable. Although understandably frightened by a string of fatal "accidents" to people close to her, she remains proactive in trying to research her clients' complaints of conspiracy. Donna Anders excels at making every character we meet, a possible anatagonist, so that we, along with Liza, don't know whom to trust. For analytical readers who love to problem solve, this story will delight you. The suspense keeps you caught in its grip right up through the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have Time set aside for this one, November 30, 2000

This review is from: Dead Silence (Mass Market Paperback)
In the same way that I have seen plane passengers enjoy being transported into dust eating denizens of the west by L'Amour books, this latest effort by Donna Anders will make someone look over his or her shoulder as they get caught caught up in the thrilling action of "Dead Silence." Ms Anders pushes all the right buttons. Check your cardiac function and don't plan to fall asleep reading this book. If this is your reading material during a long plane flight, double up on the deodorant!

I went to book reading on a friday night and had Donna sign my book. I had never heard of her and after hearing her talk I decided to give her book a try. Ann Rule was right.. She is an amazing artist. This book was started at 4 saturday afternoon and finished by 7.I had intended to look at the first page.No go. I had to read the whole thing in one sitting. I was floored. It was so scary I didn't want to to put it down without making sure everything was over first. The book is about a woman who works at a Boeing like company in Seattle find that there might be a conspirisy in the hiring firing practices of her company. I can't really tell you much more beyond that, but I will tell you that you are never really sure in this book who to trust and who not too.I love that about a good book. You feel so familiar and them wham that familiarity gets you in the gut. It's one of those books that hits very close to home.I don't think I can ever live in a city agian without thinking about this book. It changes views makes you think a little more. But that's a good thing. A good book stays with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seattle suspense, November 30, 2000
This review is from: Dead Silence (Mass Market Paperback)
Donna Anders' new book, a psychological suspense novel set in Seattle, features Lisa Mac Donough, whose husband has mysteriously disappeared while riding on a ferry boat, as she faces life on her own. Her world begins to gradually darken as she becomes suspicious about layoffs at the aircraft company where she works as a Human Resources expert. Despite the flourishing economy which produces many new orders, people are losing their jobs. Lisa investigates and stumbles upon evidence of corporate espionage. As her knowledge grows, so does her fear---she's being followed, and she can feel safe nowhere, not even in her high-rise condo. She wonders if there is anyone---even Seattle police officers---whom she can trust. Despite the increasing danger of her situation, she remains determined to find out who and what is behind this. Take a break from the hustle-bustle of the holiday season, settle down with a nice hot beverage---and listen for footsteps in the night! If you enjoy riveting suspense, this is your cup of tea.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thrill Ride, November 30, 2000
By
This review is from: Dead Silence (Mass Market Paperback)
Wow, what a book. Twists and turns that left me breathless. I've always been a fan of psychological suspense novels and love Anders' previous works, but this one is surely her finest effort thus far. Along with an intricate plot -- which left me helpless to pin the tail on the villain until the final pages -- I was fascinated by her depiction of the dark underbelly of manufacturing: the world of industrial espionage. I found myself cheering for Liza MacDonough, the main character, who, while fighting to gain control of her own life, finally pieces together the puzzle. The ending gave me chills, but I'll refrain from explaining why to save the surprise. It's too delicious to spoil. I highly recommend this book. Read and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A real mystery, November 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Dead Silence (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm a mystery fan, and this book was a true mystery. I changed my mind several times about the identity of the bad guy (girl), but at the end of the book, everything made sense. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! Yet I didn't want it to be over!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dead Silence by Donna Anders, November 29, 2000

This review is from: Dead Silence (Mass Market Paperback)
Donna Anders'newest psychological suspense novel "Dead Silence" kept me full of thrills and chills. Lisa MacDonough who is a Human Resouces expert deals with people being laid off in mass, even though the company has many new orders, and it's Lisa's job to help them survive in a jobless world. I've worked as a Human Resource manager. Donna's character Lisa MacDonough became a person I cared about.(She could have been me.) Gradually, she realizes that there is something fishy about the lay-offs, and stumbles into a major plot of industrial espionage. At the same time, someone begins to follow her. It's subtle at first, and gradually grows more frightening. As she walks faster, the presence behind her walks faster.(I don't want to spoil the suprises at every turn.) The ending will terrify the anyone, especially someone who are afraid of footsteps in the night and heights.(Warning, don't read "Dead Silence" when your alone.)

5.0 out of 5 stars THUMBS UP !, September 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Dead Silence (Mass Market Paperback)
DEAD SILENCE BY DONNA ANDERS I started with "The Flower Man" and then when "Another Life" hit the stands, I made a bee line for it. I am a definite fan of Donna Anders. I have been eagerly waiting for her next one when my friend e-mailed me that her new book "DEAD SILENCE" was on the shelf in the local bookstore. I'm certainly not the only fan as I got the last one they had. Each book is better than the one before. DEAD SILENCE is THE book to take you away if you want to escape from the daily hum drum, the TV, phone etc. and enjoy yourself at the same time. The pace is quick. The workplace, the characters and the events that surround "Liza" are very believable. That humans can and sometimes do behave in such a manner is all too common. Just read the headlines in the daily paper. Norma Rae, Erin Brokovick etc. The tight character portrayals and descriptions, the way Donna Anders writes, you could paint each place she takes you because you are there, and you can see it. The mental process of Liza keeps you turning page after page. Liza is fragile but she is tough too. She is not the 'Superwoman' of many of today's mysteries, but she is an intelligent everyday woman. I think all of us have at sometime or another been in a situation where we have felt fear. It can be paralyzing or galvanizing. "DEAD SILENCE" is a must read for anyone who enjoys mystery, and suspense. You won't be disappointed. I give it a 'thumbs up' for a great read. From a fan in the Northwest Territory.
