Although this book did not surpass "You've Gotta Play Hurt" in my estimation, Jenkins is no less racy and raunchy and hilarious in Dead Solid Perfect.

I have no doubt that this book could have been written this year and still rings true, although maybe not all the dope smoking.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dead Solid Pancaked
Why did I forget that the lame mores of the 50's pancaked our society into monotonous sameness? Well, "Dead Solid Perfect" reminds me of that sameness with its tone deaf vocabulary stereotyping Texans, women, golfers, etc.

Though members of each of those groups may well deserve toasting from time to time, Dan Jenkins gets it wrong for the 50's or the 21st...

Although this book did not surpass "You've Gotta Play Hurt" in my estimation, Jenkins is no less racy and raunchy and hilarious in Dead Solid Perfect.

I have no doubt that this book could have been written this year and still rings true, although maybe not all the dope smoking.

Like many of Jenkins' books, the story revolves around the Texas mystique and a man who can ace his avocation but fail miserably in his personal life. This book mixes enough politics, gambling, golf and sex to become one of the funniest books out there.

Jenkins' style is love-him-or-hate-him, but you if like this one, you'll be searching more used bookstores for other books that are out-of-print.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the funniest book I have ever read., August 23, 2001

An incredibly funny account of golf, shapely adorables, gambling hustles and general all around characters. I laughed out loud so hard I cried a couple of times. The bit about Kenny Lee Puckett and Spec Reynolds creating a fictional West Texas town in order to bet on the football team and try and pull one over on their bookie is pure genius(dont worry, I gave nothing away). In todays smoothed over, politically correct world this throwback is actually quite unlike anything you will read. I have read this book twice I liked it so much. Order one used if you cant get it new.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a keeper - you either love or loathe Jenkins, October 23, 2000
This review is from: Dead Solid Perfect (Paperback)
It's clear from the reviews on this page that not everyone likes Dan Jenkins. However, those who like him are hardcore fans, jealously guarding their out-of-print copies, even though they would love to share the joy with their friends.

Jenkins is no liberal - his politics are straight out of the south. Having said that, the most sympathetic character in this book is a liberal woman, so I wouldn't call Dan Jenkins prejudiced.

What really comes through in this book is Jenkins' love of sport, and golf in particular, and for people who live life to the full without preaching, or listening to preachers. It's also a gripping story which will appeal to sports fans who must always stay to bitter end, just in case the sport offers up a million-to-one surprise ending, so that they can tell their grandchildren: "I was there".

The most important thing about Jenkins is that you feel that he cares - about his characters, and about sport. It's nice to have a bit of passion in a book, and maybe passion is by definition politically incorrect.

Dan Jenkins strings together this hilarious take on the life of a PGA Tour golfer with deeper social issues and rolls it all together into a dimpled ball of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book!, July 8, 1999

What a great book! Dan Jenkins obviously has a gift, and golf is lucky Jenkins has shown an interest in the game. This book is hilarious. Randy Quaid is perfect in the small-screen version, but the book stands head and shoulders above the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent humerous golf book for golfers!, October 9, 1997
By A Customer

I have read this book at least 10 times. Each pass through reveals some insight into why I play golf. But more than that, this book entertains the reader. I still laugh till I cry when I re-read it. Dad Jenkins truly understands the golfer mentality.

5.0 out of 5 stars a Great Read, but not for those with high brows..., February 16, 1998
This review is from: Dead Solid Perfect (Paperback)
As golf novels go, as sports novels go, and as humorous novels go, Dan Jenkins is - to go with the lingo - "da man!" Although a little too peppered with ribaldry for the highly intellectual reader, the novel (and all of his books, in fact) do a wonderful job of making the reader feel like a drinkin' buddy. These are laugh-till-you-cry books that leave you wishing you actually knew a few of the characters. This one is probably his second-best behind "You Gotta Play Hurt."

Still, after more than 30 years, the best golf book ever written...

Funny, hilarious, irreverent...Willard Peacock's slice...nobody could (or can)cuss like ole Willard..after all this time, it's still funny.

Dan Jenkins at this best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Missing Links but still enjoyable., February 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dead Solid Perfect (Paperback)
I am a slow reader, and I read this book in two days. Very entertaining. It did not have quite the plot that Missing Links has, especially on the golf course, but it was just as humorous. I highly recommend it to any golf enthusiast.

This book is a fast read and a completely irreverant and bawdy look at the inside world of Pro Golf. I had to set it down so many times to wipe my eyes from laughing so hard that it interrupted the thoughts...well nearly. There is a character in it who just can't play the game at the level of his Pro buddies and his string of epiphets are of legendary friends who I used to play with. Even down to my friend throwing his golf bag into a lake in Davis, Ca. "...blasted thinrodoit, rummy, farking, recalcitrant morunetated, gibble strak!!Dipple f*&^ing grunt!" among others...as his ball sliced off through the trees into the next fairway. GREAT READ. I would like to add the writer skilfully added a personal touch of troubles in his life and a great ending.
