Book Description

June 1, 1999
Temporarily relieved from homicide detail for making the wrong politicians mad, police detective C. R. Payne is forced to work undercover in the seediest hangouts in Atlanta. Pretty tame stuff-until one of the bar's clientele is found dead in a nearby motel. Payne takes the case when he uncovers the victim's powerful political connections, figuring that solving the murder is his ticket back to the job he loves. But there are a few things Payne didn't figure on. Like the FBI. And international arms dealers. And a merciless trained killer who will stop at nothing to finish the job he's started..

Praise for Robert Coram:

"Relentless and fast-paced, filled with usually successful plot twists."-- Publishers Weekly, for Atlanta Heat

"This is a well-written police procedural that is packed with interesting characters and a look at race relations in Atlanta."-- Atlanta Constitution, for Atlanta Heat

[A] taut psychological thriller...gives readers all the action and gory twists they can handle."-- Publishers Weekly, for Kill The Angels

"A shocking, non-stop rollercoaster ride of suspense and horror that will have you hanging on to your seat and holding your breath."--William Deihl, bestselling author of Primal Fear, for Kill The Angels

More About the Author

After running all my life to get as far as possible from my hometown of Edison, GA, now I am running back to Edison; this time to refresh my memories of growing up. All for a memoir titled "Gully Dirt." In July 2011, I will send it to my agent. It will be my 14th book. We shall see.

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing perspective... a very good read!, September 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dead South (Paperback)
This is the first Coram work I have read and I can't wait to get another. The protagonist is a black Atlanta detective whose unusually high degree of mastery in the art of interrogation gets tested to the limits in the case of his career.

Coram's Dead South grants its non-African American readers unique insight into the daily perils of being a minority, with humor and grace that add to the value of his work as much as does his well developed plot. As a Caucasian, I found this perspective very interesting.

Payne's "TV movie of the week" comment at the beginning of the book had me laughing out loud!

Well done, Mr. Coram!

I think this is Mr. Coram's best work to date. The story is captivating and his understanding of police interview techniques is right-on.

Pick this one up, you won't be disappointed.
