2 novels in 1 book...,
By Judy Smith "judylynnsbooks" (jamestown, ky United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Dead By Day (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Bks. 4-5) (Hardcover)
This book has 2 novels...Dead to the World and Dead as a Doornail. You really need to read the first 3 books before tackling this or you will be lost. In Dead to the World, Eric is back with Sookie as the main story. She finds the former Viking running down the road naked and he's lost his memory. Eric without a memory of his former arrogant self is hilarious, although it's always a lot of fun when he's around anyway. A bad witch has cast a spell over him because he refused her advances and refused to give her money made from his bar...Fangtasia. Sookie must keep him and protect him until the other vampires find out how to get the spell reversed. In the meantime, Eric plays the meek and helpless act to a t and soon Sookie is infatuated with him. You will laugh out loud at him at times, especially when he appears in the next story Dead as a Doornail. He is back to his old arrogant self in it and I about cracked up when Sookie handed him a broom to sweep up some glass. Imagine an arrogant Viking being ordered to do something so menial. No wonder the vampires are so fascinated with Sookie...such a no nonsense gal. I don't normally read vampire or supernatural stories but I have always loved this authors books and her stories are so lively that I had to get this series. I have laughed my way through 5 stories now and getting ready to read the next in the series. I never cared for the Anne Rice series (too scary for me) but this is like reading a cozy mystery series....well, except for all the vampires, were's, witches, shapeshifters, and some supes that I have never heard of! The stories take place in a small town in Louisiana which is a plus as it's more personal that way. Read them. You'll love them too!

It was very nice getting two books for the price of one. It was also convenient having it in hardback because when I put softcover books in my backpack they tend to tear easily. I do prefer the books as opposed to the television series. I liked the characters and was really glad to see more of Eric and Sookie evolve. I also enjoyed Claudine and her brother Claude. I didn't care much for the werewolf interaction and the whole packmaster ceremony and the Col. Flood's funneral. Also, I am getting a bit bored with Debbie Pelt but hopefully she won't plague too much more of the series.

I truly enjoy reading the Sookie Stackhouse books. I tried the first and couldn't wait to get to the next one. Each new book encompasses the old charactors and introduces new ones. My husband and I are reading these together, and he is enjoying them as much as I am.

I love these editions by SFBC Fantasy. The cover art is "edgier" and in my opinion more attractive than the "Cute" ACE book cover art (although I love the "Dracula" capes on the ACE editions :) I'd recommend getting Dead in Dixie and Dead by Day together, because you get the first 5 Sookie Stackhouse books in 2! Who could pass that up?

I think this is one of my favorites. That's hard to say since I have loved them all. She has such special talent to make us laugh about something that's always been done so seriously. But it's a hoot to read Ms. Harris. You have the feeling she is chuckling the whole time she is writing. This is a subject that has always been done with the lights dim, the sound of winter outside and knowing you will get your blood drained at any moment. But hey! Ya gotta love Bill and now here is Eric with no memory of all the nasty things he has done and just belly flopping in love. Besides Bill is on the outs right now since Sookie thinks he deserted her.
This book came at a good time. I've never been so involved with people in a book as I have with the people of Bon Temp. It's very similar a town where I live, people I know and here along comes vampires. Yes, vampires. When the most exciting thing that happened in Bon Temp is someone is not speaking to someone right now because they misbehaved with their husband at the Country Club dance last week. I love all these books, this one especially because Eric has never smiled, never seemed to like women (or men either). Now here he is all a'dither with lovable Sookie. Thank you again, Ms. Harris and thanks for ganging up with the guys who are making True Blood. The very best show on TV in years. I read your book, I watch the show, read the book, watch the show. There are whole areas on the Internet discussing just how far the show is from the books. But who cares, they are intensely original and as different as a cow and a goat. We love them both.

Great fun, loved it,
This review is from: Dead By Day (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Bks. 4-5) (Hardcover)
Our heroine, Sookie Stackhouse is a waitress in a small southern town. She is basically a normal human, except she can read other peoples' thoughts. Considering there are vampires, werewolves, witches etc, being able to read minds is essentialy normal. Isn't it?
Charlaine Harris, the writer, is obviously influenced by Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Bryant, vampire executioner necromancer detective series; but nevertheless, there are enough originality in the Sookie Stackhouse, mind-reading waitress stories to make it worth reading. Oh yeah, there are explicit sex scenes, so you probably shouldn't be reading this to your kids as their bedtime story. Otherwise, highly recommended. |
