3.0 out of 5 stars Great book/Easier way to buy it!
The book is fantastic, but I did notice that you can buy the 6 Dead Space issues a lot cheaper than the book itself. I was waiting forever for Amazon to get it in and I finally ran out of patience and bought it aftermarket. I would recommend the individual books over the expensive hardcover. Just my 2 cents.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story with solid art, December 5, 2008
This review is from: Dead Space (Hardcover)
For those who haven't read the comics, the game Dead Space is the third part of the Dead Space story, and the comics are the beginning. The comics follow Planetary Security officers Neumann and Cortez investigating strange occurrences on a mining colony preparing for a planet crack.

Neumann and Cortez track erratic behavior around the colony while following rumors of a "marker", a supposed religious relic found on the planet during preparations. Diving deeper, Neumann and Cortez hear reports of apparitions, hallucinations, and dementia immediately preceding the ever-increasing outbreaks of violence. With their jobs and their lives at stake, they attempt to uncover the secret behind the violence and the paranoid delusions seemingly shared by the entire crew.

The story is very solid, especially when tying in with the game. Several questions one would find from only playing through the game are answered in this volume. Also, Antony Johnston writes both this book and the dialogue for Dead Space (the game), so both are very similar in feel.

This hardcover won't let Dead Space fans down. The cover graphic is printed right onto its hard-bound cover, and looks quite impressive. The comic itself offers a unique artistic approach that, while not terribly detailed, is accurately dark and bloody, and does a fine job of setting the stage for tale to be told.

Any Dead Space fans that are unsure if this is something they would enjoy should check into it. The comics are the perfect companion to the game. Dead Space: Downfall, the recently released animated movie is the middle ground for the three-part (so far) series, but does little more than provide some quick filler (and a quick buck for the producers.) The real meat of the story is between the game and the comics.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for all Dead Space video game fans, January 6, 2009
This review is from: Dead Space (Hardcover)
The Dead Space Hardcover is truly a wonderful add-on to Electronic Arts' eponymous video game. The comic contains a biography of every protagonist, the full story with its six chapters as well as exclusive scenes not shown in the cartoon version, and artworks of the game. Without going into spoilers, video game fans should know that the comic contains enormous amounts of juicy background information that will bring some light to the whole story. If you love the game, this book is really indispensable!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Unique Masterpiece, October 11, 2009

This book is first rate (both quality and content-wise); one of the most beautiful comics I've ever held in my hands. Anthony Johnston's story and Ben Templesmith's outstanding art style combined with the quality of representation (hard cover, vibrant colors, and fine contours) make this book a `must buy.' It is truly a rare gem in the jam-packed world of comics. I recommend this publication to anyone interested in comic books, sci-fi, horror, or those who simply liked the video game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the movie, June 8, 2009
This review is from: Dead Space (Hardcover)
I watched the comic on PS3 first and loved it. This is the beginning of the Dead Space story and the action does take a little while to get started but when it does it's fantasic. If your a fan of 30 Days of Night's artwork (Ben Templesmith is great!) or just curious how they got that Marker onboard the ship then you'll enjoy this comic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Altman be praised!, September 17, 2011

This review is from: Dead Space (Hardcover)
The comic book prequel to the hit EA video game Dead Space, whose name it shares, chronicles the story of Abraham Neumann and the discovery of a "marker" on a planet that is set to be destroyed for resources. Humanity is in the process of searching the stars for planets that can be utilized for resources and this was a mere routine "planetcrack" until the marker was found. Neumann and others notice depression and bouts of anger and rage in the miners that were exposed to the big rock and the Unitologists, a religious group obsessed with the marker, are making matters worse. It's not until the dig team experiences murders from the crazed miners that things get heated but the higher-ups decide to leave the marker where it is and continue exposing it to the people. Neumann and the resident techie Marla try to contact the orbiting ship, Ishimura, amidst the chaos of the religious committing suicide to become "one with their god" and the crazy going on killing sprees but learn that comms have been down since the leaders of the mission went ahead with their planetcrack. Neumann discovers an alien substance that spreads like a virus and Marla finds out that the aliens do in fact use a recombinator virus to infect others and continuously infect others and they do so but reanimating the dead. At this point, the ship is riddled with Necromorph monsters that are killing everyone in sight and using the dead bodies to turn more Necromorphs and Neumann and Marla, after realizing all the shuttles are destroyed, head to the comm tower to contact the Ishimura but there's no real hope left and Neumann resorts to making one final vidlog as a warning to those that decide to head down planet-side. He reminds them that they might not like what they find if they come looking for him.

So, this rare TPB is a prequel to the Dead Space game starring Isaac and basically shows how the marker brings forth an alien virus that infects everyone and quickly takes over. It doesn't really shed any light as to how the physical manifestations find their way onto the ship or how they grow so abnormally fast but it does show it from beginning to gory end. It was a great read and the art, although some don't like it, was very unique. The coloring was based on where the scene was taking place (so it was easy to spot scene transitions) and it was dark and, when in a chaotic setting, blurry just to make things more tense. The writing was very typical of a sci-fi movie but was decent nonetheless. Overall, I really enjoyed it and it's a really fun read if you've played Dead Space at all! I highly recommend it if you can find it under $100!

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a read, December 16, 2010

This review is from: Dead Space (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful comic! The art is a little strange at first but you come to enjoy it, the story was told well and details were visible. The book tells the story of what happened on the colony and what happened before downfall and gives you a good understanding of the beginning of dead space.

Great artwork and storytelling. All you could ask for in a videogame based comic book. But save yourself a few books and head to the visceral games site and check out there swag store first.
