Book Description

"When reading Dead Stock, it’s difficult to determine what is bigger, Hall’s imagination, heart, or sense of humor. Shambles is an amazing character." --Splice Today

Meet Bert Shambles, a perpetually confused young man whose life mirrors his surname. He is stuck back in his suburban Long Island hometown, enduring a three-year suspended sentence for an act of chivalry gone terribly wrong. He works part-time at a church thrift shop and makes extra money by selling “dead stock”—vintage clothes that have never been worn—to a local boutique.

On a routine pick up for the store, Bert learns that the widow of a recently deceased pro golfer is offering a reward for the return of her dead husband’s favorite putter—and an even bigger reward for proof that her husband was murdered. Bert jumps at the chance, and soon finds himself being chased by a violent, van-driving maniac, romantically involved with a mobster’s daughter, and quite possibly being set up to take the fall by his probation officer and crazy ex-girlfriend. As the forces of good and evil close in around him, Bert must race to clear his name and discover the truth so he doesn’t wind up in prison…or worse.

Filled with twists, turns, and unforgettable characters, and propelled by a truly lovable hero and wicked sense of humor, Dead Stock heralds the arrival of a wonderful new mystery series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stock Worth Buying May 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Here's what I think: when you start this book, be prepared to ignore whatever else is going on in your life and sink into the world of Bert Shambles. Recent circumstances have left him in a bad place, but he's moving on--and you'll love being there as he does. There was a vulnerable honesty to the character that, coupled with author Tim Hall's humor, made this the perfect cozy mystery for a cross country flight. I found myself pausing only to make sure we still had a few hours left before we landed so I could finish reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun mystery December 13, 2013
By rhonda
Format:Kindle Edition

Bert is a likable character who's life is a mess. He lives in a boarding room with no kitchen. He is on parole for three years. He is not happy to be back on Long Island for the next three years. He gets involved in one mess after another.

The mystery is pretty good and leaves you guessing about what all is going on. About who is chasing him and why.

Their is a lot of humor about what is going on in Bert's life. He gets banged up a lot falling out of windows, being chased
and trying to help the women he meets along the way.

The setting is Long Island, New York modern day.

The pace is pretty good. Every time something happens and evens out something else goes wrong in his life.

I wanted things to workout for Bert and his friends. I would read another book by Tim Hall in the future based on Dead Stock.

I was given this ebook to read for review purpose and to be part of Dead Stock's book tour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bert Shambles is on probation. January 31, 2014
By Karen M
Bert Shambles is on probation. Bert Shambles' ex-girlfriend whom he refers to as Devil Girl is part of the reason why he is on probation. The rest of the reason is Bert's instinctive chivalry when it comes to protecting women. He beat up Devil Girl's new boyfriend when she called him for help. Did I mention she has a tendency to lie or at least exaggerate?

Bert's mother hires a lawyer and gets their priest to serve as a character witness for him. Bert gets three years probation and no jail time and is required to work at the church thrift store part time. So, all he has to do is work for the priest, live on Long Island and stay out of trouble. Our hapless hero actually likes his job and tries to stay out of trouble until he gets dragged back in again. Keep your fingers crossed!

The characters are very well written. For me the mystery almost took a backseat to Bert's misadventures and the cast of characters that are his friends. There are a few laugh out loud moments, like when he discovers he has lost his clothes which is the beginning of the mystery and a number of just dumb luck and bad luck situations that made me shake my head. All in all this added up to a very enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quirky cozy July 12, 2014
Bert Shambles is 23, seeing a therapist, and on 3 years probation for aggravated assault. He's not happy about being stuck in his Long Island home town, which he considers "one of the angriest places in the world". Or maybe it's just Bert who's angry. In other words, his life is a shambles. But as a condition of his probation he needs to stay employed, so he hangs onto a part-time job in a local thrift shop and supplements his pay by selling 'dead stock' (older clothes that have never been worn) to a vintage clothing shop in the city.

A confused plot that involves donated golf clothes, a missing putter, an ethically-challenged parole officer, and the daughter of a mafiosi, finds Bert constantly on the run from goons, gangsters and police. In this quirky cozy, things go from bad to worse for Bert. But he's a likeable guy and has a colorful group of friends who are willing to come to his aid. That's enough to make me look forward to reading the second in the series.
