Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Television anchor Lacie Wagner submits to more gruesome thrills in this sensationalistic sequel to Burnout (1999). On the Nantucket beach where Lacie schedules her exercise runs from her vacation home, a "strange water warrior" Jane Doe washes up, contrary to the likely action of wind and current. The body is oddly marked with lacerations and burns, adorned with diamond earrings and also wearing military-grade diving equipment yet the local and national military establishments deny knowledge of her. Lacie uses this story for her comeback to national news after medical leave (due to action in Burnout) and in the course of her investigation collects a circle of new people: muscular Tom Wheeler, the Nantucket medical examiner; aggressive Assistant DA Hinks; cranky Boston medical examiner Miles McKenzie; and eventually, through McKenzie's contacts, the cartoonishly superlative investigator Nick St. James. The stereotypes and coincidences pile up until Lacie is sure she has been targeted for a weird scheme of torture; the mysterious manipulator behind the scenes feeds her hints about other missing women and sets her up to publicize his macabre trophies as hard news. Disturbing physiological effects, dubious technical gadget descriptions and the preponderance of beautiful, lush-chested women with powerful jobs stalked and tortured by ambiguous handsome men make this work a touch more lurid than Patricia Cornwell's or Linda Fairstein's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dead Tide, March 18, 2004

I agree with all the reviews with one BIG exception. (If you haven't read "Burnout" a far superior book to this one, don't read any further.

I was soooo furious when I came to page 12, and read that Lacie gave Jack
the choice of either being with her , or giving up his job, that it was hard for
me to continue reading. Fine for him to give her the gift of life for herself
and her daughter but not to anyone else because of her fears. As a couple
they had it all. I would much rather read books about Jack Stein. I read
"Burnout" in two days riveted, "Dead Tide" took me six, Please Ms Kadow,
bring back JACK, with or without Lacie.

2.0 out of 5 stars Deja vu all over again, December 3, 2007

This review is from: Dead Tide (Paperback)
In this book, a mad killer is obsessed with news anchorwoman, Lacie Wagner. He uses one of the natural elements to torture his victims and invites Lacie to join him in th element. Of course the killer finally meets his end in the ironic way of being dispatched by the element he chooses to use as his insturment of torture. Lacie can't handle the situation alone, so she enlists the aid of a rogue government man of action who is a pain to his organization, but they keep him around because he is the best at his job. Together, they unravel the truth about a top secret government organization. The rogue government guy is wounded by a gunshot from the evil genius and is pretty much useless in the final battle. Despite his unlimited financial resources, the evil maniac is undone. Oh, did I mention he is also a master of disguise? So what is the point of all this? The point is, reading 'DEAD TIDE' is almost like reading 'BURNOUT' again. The two books are so much alike it was sad. I felt totally ripped off after having read this book and it is safe to say that this is my last Jeannine Kadow book. If you haven't read 'BURNOUT', this would be an okay read at best. It is readable, but really you have to totally suspend belief in reality to accept this plot as even remotely possible. Also I think the fact that one of the good guys just flat out commits murder in the end and everyone is okay with that really seemed out of character.

2.0 out of 5 stars maddening, November 26, 2005

If you haven't read the preceding novel with Lacie
this book will probably be a good read.
BUT..........

don't read any further if you haven't read Burnout:::::::

Leaving Jack out of the book and for reasons which do not match up with the intense relationship that was established in Burnout, threw me right out of the story. Very, very jarring plot line. Colored Lacie in a not so nice light.
I couldn't enjoy the rest of the book. I forced myself to read it.
