5.0 out of 5 stars blows all of their previous work out of the water, June 17, 2006

This review is from: The Dead Walk (Audio CD)
wow, these guys have released quite a brutal album. i'm not a real big fan of hearing palm muting on every single song, but i love hearing the acacia strain play it because they do it better than any other band. this is basically a mix of blood has been shed style breakdown/grooves, sweet two step beats, and math metal reminiscent of a life once lost(track two, right from the start). if you are into hardcore, you'll love this. if you are into metal/death metal, you'll love this. it doesn't matter, the album is that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pantera like Devastation, September 22, 2006

The guitar riffs are thunderous unlike any other band out there. The base and drum are pummeling as other reviewers mentioned. The roaring vocals compliment this apocolyptic presence of the music.. But, this band changes up the tempo during their each song to a very catchy groove.. Overall this a more mature album then their previous ones with a faster tempo and a tighter sound..

I saw them live and these guys rip it up..

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING, June 16, 2006
This review is from: The Dead Walk (Audio CD)
this is an absolutly amazing cd. with influences clearly from a life once lost, the red chord, but not losing the same brutality we all love the acacia strain for. this is about 50 times better than 3750, wich was an amazing album

do yourself a favor and pick this up now.

*Waho! Shut It Down! has one of the most nasty breakdowns ever*

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying, July 9, 2006

LeftManOut (TheCityThatNeverSleeps, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Dead Walk (Audio CD)
When I first got my hands on the long awaited third full length from The Acacia Strain, I can say I was a little disappointed. My expectations had been raised very high by their previous effort "3750", and after my first listen all I could really think of the album was that it just sounded like an overly brutal, generic metalcore album. Thankfully though I took more time to listen to this monster and try and find the charm in it. And after about 5 listens, I found it. While it's not perfect, "The Dead Walk" presents exactly what TAS have always been known for making; Brutal, intense metalcore. It might take a few spins to catch on with you, but "The Dead Walk" will eventually reveal its strengths to your ears.

So if you happen to be unfamiliar with the band, you basically just need to know that The Acacia Strain is heavy. Very HEAVY. If brutally heavy music isn't your bag, then you should stay as far away from "The Dead Walk" as you can. However if you loved the band on any of their previous efforts, this record should have no problem satisfying your needs for some heavy tunes.

A problem that plagued the last record ("3750") was that it was so short. This has been fully addressed this time. "The Dead Walk" delivers 10 devastating tracks (and a short intro). After the eerie effects of "Sarin: The End", "Burn Face" kicks in with its pulsating riffs and sludgy breakdowns, letting you know that right out the gate the band means business. Ditching the three guitar gimmick this time around (as their third guitarist departed the band shortly after the last record), The band is still just as heavy as one would imagine. And also still just as technical (not overly techical though). "4x4" and "Predator; Never Prey", two of the standout tracks, both have over the top rhythms, yet technical solos and riffs keenly placed throughout. The drums are constantly pounding away, and there is no shortage of double bass work found. Vincent's voice is still just as intense, and his bellows perfectly compliment the abrasive atmosphere the band creates with their music. No melodic sections here though. Vincent keeps his raging screams up with the brutality of the music. And once again the band gets points in the lyrical department for being able to go outside the typical metalcore standard and deliver song topics that range from society to religion and humanity in general. While there's a bit of repetitiveness in "The Dead Walk" (some tracks seem to blend together due to their heavy nature), there isn't really anything that a fan of the band won't like.

After giving "The Dead Walk" some repeated listens, I'm really starting to fall in love with its heaviness. If you're looking for a brutal, but yet somewhat repetitive album, then this record should be the perfect fit for you. I'm glad the band addressed the problems that the last record had, and that they still haven't lost one bit of their heavy sound. "The Dead Walk" is a find addition to any brutal-metalcore fan's collection.

Highlights : "4x4", "See You Next Tuesday", "Predator; Never Prey"

4.0 out of 5 stars Extreme to the max, August 13, 2006
This review is from: The Dead Walk (Audio CD)
The Acacia Strain are one of my favorite bands in the metalcore scene. This album varies just a little from their last two albums, in the fact that since "3750", they have dropped from three guitar players to only two, which makes their sound not so clastrophobic.

Otherwise, this disc is pretty much the same as all the others. An aural pummeling greets you with the second track after the intro, and doesn't let ep from there until the very end. A very talented band, I hope they stick together for a long time to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars I think I'm physically injured!!, January 3, 2007
This review is from: The Dead Walk (Audio CD)
This is one of those albums that just grabs you and then shakes you around then drops you again only to pick you up and shake you again. Is it just me or does Adam D seem to produce most of everything that is good right now.. let me re-phrase anything that is just blindingly heavy and crushing. The Dead Walk is a meshuggah like sludge of off timed beats and brutal vocals. 3750 was pretty dope but this just owns! I bought this during the X-Mas season (it's very holiday) but listened to it and loved every moment.. don't pass it up, it's a great CD and deserves a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now, this is some heavy stuff, June 6, 2007

This review is from: The Dead Walk (Audio CD)
While there are some metalcore bands that suck, there are some bands out there that I like including Despised Icon, Chimaira, Between the Buried and Me, The Red Chord, and especially this band that I'am currently reviewing The Acacia Strain. I got into this band when I heard the song "4x4" on my Music Choice Metal Channel (channel 310 on my television). So I went out and got their new album "The Dead Walk", and I really like what I've heard. In a time where most metalcore bands today just sound the same, that's not even the case with this band. The Acacia Strain come like a cross between the brutality and aggression of Pantera, and the technical complexity of Meshuggah. Frontman Vincent Bennent has got great brutal growling vocals that he just spews right from the guts. The guitarists on here come across a hybrid of the super-aggressive buzzsaw-like tone playing style of Pantera, and the catchy yet complex time changes of Meshuggah. The riffs are very catchy, heavy, and downright catchy. The drumming is very impressive as well with lots of nice tempo and ryhthm changes. My favorite song on here is without question "4x4" which contains heavy grinding riffs, brutal pounding drums, nice tempo changes, and even a guitar solo. Other favorites on here include "Whoa! Shut It Down" which has catchy bobbing rhythms, and the earthshaking riffs and vicious drumwork on "Burnface". "Demolishor" is another favorite which includes some more demolishing riffs, as well as some hefty double bass drumwork and sick gut wrenching vocals. The closing title track "The Dead Walk" features more head pounding riffs, clobbering rhythms, and a nice solo. Overall this whole album is just awesome. So if you're looking for an album, that's just heavy, brutal, and all out abrasive, then this album is yours. Skip anything by 36 Crazyfists, Atreyu, Bleeding Through, and buy this album instead. Enjoy!!

Jeremy's song ratings:

1. Sarin: The End - 4/5

2. Burnface - 5/5

3. 4x4 - 5/5 (Favorite Song)

4. As If Set Afire - 5/5

5. Angry Mob Justice - 5/5

6. Whoa! Shut It Down - 5/5

7. See You Next Tuesday - 5/5

8. Demolishor - 5/5

9. Pity - 5/5

10. Predator: Never Prey - 5/5

11. The Dead Walk - 5/5

5.0 out of 5 stars A Metalcore CD That Isn't The Same-Old, September 19, 2006
This review is from: The Dead Walk (Audio CD)
Many bands these days just hate to sound generic and wish to stand out in the crowd. While certain bands will try but fail, the Acacia Strain is an example of how they break barriers with this CD. With this being their 3rd full-length, the band proves that they haven't let themselves down at all. If you dig guitars that are downtuned to A, you will dig this. If you dig hardcore with elements of sludge metal in it, this will be your new favorite band. And no, this band isn't ALL breakdowns. Recommended for something heavy and fun.
