About the Author

DV Berkom is a slave to the voices in her head. As the bestselling author of two award-winning thriller series (Leine Basso and Kate Jones), her love of creating resilient, kick-ass women characters stems from a lifelong addiction to reading spy novels, mysteries, and thrillers, and longing to find the female equivalent within those pages.

Raised in the Midwest, she earned a BA in political science from the University of Minnesota and promptly moved to Mexico to live on a sailboat. Several cross-country moves later, she now lives just outside of Seattle, Washington with the love of her life, Mark, a chef-turned-contractor, and several imaginary characters who love to tell her what to do. Her most recent books include Cargo, The Body Market, Bad Traffick, A One Way Ticket to Dead, and Yucatán Dead.

Since turning against her boyfriend, a Mexican drug lord, Kate has been on the run. Unable to trust the FBI's witness protection program, she relies on her wits. After moving to small town in Alaska and changing her identity a few times, she begins to relax. Then she witnesses an execution style murder and knows she's been discovered.

She goes to the local police and tells them everything. The Sheriff, knowing he is out of his depth calls in reinforcement. Meanwhile, he assigns Sam, an officer, to protect her. Kate's well-honed instincts tell her to run. She is trying to do just that but the bad guys are making it hard.

I love the Kate Jones series. Kate is a woman I can identify with and in this installment we are treated to a bit of a romance between her and Sam. I can't say enough about Sam's character. This is a short story not focused on him, but his character development is superb. He's not the typical hunky hero who feels a bit like a cardboard cut out, he's three dimensional and believable. I wanted these two people to get it on!

D.V. Berkom does a fantastic job keeping Kate level headed and focused on keeping herself alive while developing the doomed romance. Add to that the non-stop action and you have a story that's impossible to put down. Excellent! More, give me more!

If you haven't read the first five books in this series, you need to read them first or a lot of the stuff in this episode will not make sense as it really can't stand on its own. Here is a link to that series: Bad Spirits - Books 1-5 (Novella) (A Kate Jones Thriller)

Without having a spoiler, the author does a good job of continuing the story - the action pretty much starts within a minute of starting the story and literally doesn't end. As a stereotypical guy, I usually don't enjoy, or read much of, fiction that has a female as the main character - mainly because I can't relate to them. However, D.V. Berkom is one good storyteller and I am looking forward to reading the continuing saga of Kate Jones.

Dead of Winter - Bad Spirits in the Alaskan Wilderness

Rating: 4 of 5
Author: D.V. Berkom
Format: Kindle

Hiking alone in the wintery Alaskan wilderness, Kate Jones witnesses an execution style murder. It is then she realizes that the life she had escaped five years earlier had caught up to her. Running out and stealing money from her south-of-the-border drug-lord boyfriend had turned into a life sentence of constant moving and looking over her back. How he had found her she didn't know, but what she did know is that to stay alive she would once more have to stay one step ahead of her fate. But can she save those around her as well as herself?

D.V Berkom's Dead of Winter is the first book in the second series of books that pick up where the Bad Spirits series left off. Berkom's writing is crisp and fast paced. Her descriptions are so refined and precise I could almost fell the chill and tension Kate experienced each step of the way. Action packed with a heart pounding rate, this brief novel is like a episode of 24 and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat.

I enjoyed this series even more than the first as Berkom has added to the action by introducing some depth through a romantic interest. The pacing is balanced well with no hint of the dues ex machina elements that were occasionally found in the first series of books. The Kindle price is an unbelievable value. You won't be disappointed if you check out this series.

The continuation of the Kate Jones Adventure Series in Dead of Winter was just as good, if not better, than the first five.

Ms. Berkom captures the readers attention from the beginning and maintains that captivating tension throughout the entire story. Kate is a brave and self-reliant person, but life on the run can be lonely.

She has made it a point never to get too close to anyone, until she meets Sam. Ms. Berkom's characterization of Sam is perfect and I found myself as taken by his character as Kate was.

The imagery in Dead of Winter was amazing with the location being in Alaska and the research I'm certain Ms. Berkom put into this book was extensive. She described the trees, shrubbery, and details of Kate's surroundings in this beautiful, though harsh territory, with such detail and vividness that I could almost smell the surroundings.

What is in store for Kate next, as she continues her life on the run looking over her shoulder in hopes that she can see death coming and avoid it at all costs.

I look forward to the next instalment of these wonderful stories from Ms. Berkom.

If you've been following the exploits of Kate Jones, you know she's on the run from Roberto Salazar, her ex-boyfriend and Mexican drug lord. Salazar is not a man to forgive and forget, especially since Kate didn't just leave, she left with a sack full of his cash.
Dead of Winter finds Kate in Alaska, where she's found a nice job and safety from Salazar, she thinks. That hope ends as the pursuing Salazar has discovered her whereabouts. His men leave a trail of death behind them as they zone in on her.
Sam is the local deputy assigned to protect her until she can escape from Alaska. Sam is both good for her and good to her. They have what might've been a wonderful love affair but in her heart she knows she has to keep him relegated to a man she had a fun fling with. Even as she does this, a part of her wishes circumstances were different because he could be so much more to her. For now, she has to keep on running.
