Book Description

Lexy Lomax has run away from her obnoxious husband, taking with her a cool half million of his ill-gotten gains and a homicidal chihuahua called Kinky. Holed up in a decrepit log cabin on the Suffolk coast, Lexy finds herself mistaken for the previous owner of the cabin, a private investigator, now deceased. Before she knows it she's embroiled in a cocktail of marital infidelity (possibly), missing cats (probably) and poison pen letters (definitely). Oh, yes - and a murder or two... ""Crisp prose and a plot laced with animal tomfoolery will keep readers amused and eager for a sequel."" Publishers Weekly ""A delightful romp with an admirable pair of protagonists. . . Highly recommended."" I Love a Mystery

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Set on the Suffolk coast, Hill's droll debut introduces accidental sleuth Alexandra Lexy Lomax. After discovering that her flaky husband, Gerard Warwick-Holmes, the star of TV's Heirlooms in Your Attic, is a crook, Lexy flees London—along with her pet Chihuahua and half a million quid of Gerard's stolen loot—and takes refuge at Otter's End, a log cabin in Clopwolde-on-Sea. Lexy soon realizes that Mrs. Glenda Doyle, the cabin's deceased previous occupant, had been a PI with an ad for discreet services still running in the local paper. How hard can it be, wonders Lexy, who's in need of ready cash (she doesn't dare touch the stolen money for the moment), to trail a possibly philandering wife or locate a missing cat? It turns out to be very hard, indeed, after the wife is murdered and the cat proves more valuable than the average feline. Crisp prose and a plot laced with animal tomfoolery will keep readers amused and eager for a sequel. (Oct.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, funny, delightful mystery, April 2, 2009
This review is from: Dead Woman's Shoes (Paperback)
This mystery has it all-- Kinky the chihuahua, a missing cat, a vet, a policeman, an entire drama club, and of course, an amateur sleuth, Lexy, who must sort it all out even though she is on the run herself! There are twists and turns, capers-many threads woven into a completely captivating tale.

A great escapist read, with a layered plot that keeps you guessing. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lexy is a keeper, March 7, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dead Woman's Shoes (Paperback)
This is the first novel in what I hope will be a long series. Lexy has fled to the Suffolk coast with a half million pounds, proceeds from her husband's latest scam. She is mistaken for the previous inhabitant of the cottage she rents, a private investigator. Desperate for funds (she won't touch the loot) she takes on a couple of cases and sets off, accompanied by her Chihuahua Kinky, to solve them all. The characters are delightful and I'm sure the village of Clopwolde will provide Lexy ample opportunity to improve her investigatory skills in the future. And I expect we will eventually be hearing from Gerard, the husband, in search of his loot.

I admit it, I loved this book and sadly finished it in 2 days. I really enjoyed Lexy and her sidekick, Kinky. She's smart, lands on her feet and is a real survivor. I was kept guessing concerning the villain until the end and was quite worried at one point as to the identity! If it weren't for the final paragraph the book would have received 4 stars. (You'll see - you must read it!) A really cute, fun book, hopefully set up for more (with a potential love interest....??)
