Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Set on the Suffolk coast, Hill's droll debut introduces accidental sleuth Alexandra Lexy Lomax. After discovering that her flaky husband, Gerard Warwick-Holmes, the star of TV's Heirlooms in Your Attic, is a crook, Lexy flees London—along with her pet Chihuahua and half a million quid of Gerard's stolen loot—and takes refuge at Otter's End, a log cabin in Clopwolde-on-Sea. Lexy soon realizes that Mrs. Glenda Doyle, the cabin's deceased previous occupant, had been a PI with an ad for discreet services still running in the local paper. How hard can it be, wonders Lexy, who's in need of ready cash (she doesn't dare touch the stolen money for the moment), to trail a possibly philandering wife or locate a missing cat? It turns out to be very hard, indeed, after the wife is murdered and the cat proves more valuable than the average feline. Crisp prose and a plot laced with animal tomfoolery will keep readers amused and eager for a sequel. (Oct.)

This mystery has it all-- Kinky the chihuahua, a missing cat, a vet, a policeman, an entire drama club, and of course, an amateur sleuth, Lexy, who must sort it all out even though she is on the run herself! There are twists and turns, capers-many threads woven into a completely captivating tale.

A great escapist read, with a layered plot that keeps you guessing. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it!

I admit it, I loved this book and sadly finished it in 2 days. I really enjoyed Lexy and her sidekick, Kinky. She's smart, lands on her feet and is a real survivor. I was kept guessing concerning the villain until the end and was quite worried at one point as to the identity! If it weren't for the final paragraph the book would have received 4 stars. (You'll see - you must read it!) A really cute, fun book, hopefully set up for more (with a potential love interest....??)

This is the first novel in what I hope will be a long series. Lexy has fled to the Suffolk coast with a half million pounds, proceeds from her husband's latest scam. She is mistaken for the previous inhabitant of the cottage she rents, a private investigator. Desperate for funds (she won't touch the loot) she takes on a couple of cases and sets off, accompanied by her Chihuahua Kinky, to solve them all. The characters are delightful and I'm sure the village of Clopwolde will provide Lexy ample opportunity to improve her investigatory skills in the future. And I expect we will eventually be hearing from Gerard, the husband, in search of his loot.

Lexy is on the run from her TV star ex-husband. She ends up in a seaside town, where she neatly steps into a 'dead woman's shoes' and becomes a private investigator. Loads of fun with a quirky heroine, funny sidekicks, possible romances...? And chihuahuas. Pure escapism! Reminds me a little of Janet Evanovich and Stephanie Plum.

First-time author Kaye C. Hill writes like a pro! I couldn't put the book down and finished it in a day. Lexy Lomax, the tough, bright protagonist who comes from a background of Travelers and environmental protest movements, is on the run from her unprincipled, egotistical former TV star husband who has employed very questionable means to maintain his expensive lifestyle. She's spent the last of her small inheritance on a beater car and a falling-down log cabin on a cliff in Clopwolde-on-Sea on the Suffolk coast, where she retreats with her aggressive Chihuahua Kinky, a legacy from her deceased mother-in-law.

Mistaken for the previous owner of the cabin, an elderly private investigator, and driven by the need to make enough money to feed herself and the dog, Lexy immediately falls into a series of adventures as she looks into the murder of an unpleasant woman who had alienated nearly every resident in the town, a proliferation of poison pen letters and the kidnapping of a prized cat. Along the way, she's beset by a bevy of birdwatchers, a pack of Chihuahaus, the local thespian group and a persistent Detective Inspector.

The book is happily populated with a whole range of well-developed, colorful characters and their pets and I enjoyed meeting all of them. The plot is filled with twists and turns, red herrings and one very dead flounder. The only part of the mystery I was able to solve readily was the breed of the kidnapped cat. I've now started the sequel, The Fall Girl, and hope there will be many books to come in the series!

The writer's style makes her characters and setting very easy to visualize, and I can imagine that this would make a delightful TV series for the BBC.

A good light mystery - a good puzzle - I enjoyed the book. The main character is the one who fills the dead woman's shoes by taking over her detective business with absolutely no training and solving her first mystery. Not overly realistic. I thoroughly enjoyed escaping from the real world for a while. I'd read more of Kaye C. Hill's writing.

Lexy is a bright, funny protagonist. Having just happened into detective work by accident it turned out not so bad for her. I loved the cast of characters. Especially the neighbor Edward. This book is an easy read as it is well written with witty dialogue. I thought I had it figured out but while reading the book my guess changed a few times. I never got it right so the last chapter was a bit of a surprise. I recommend this book as a light easy read. Will probably look the author up to see what else she has to offer.

Great mix of characters. A nice plot with a few twists that brings everything together. The last few sentences leave you smiling. I may have given it 5 stars if it hadn't tried to stereotype peoples views of Romani. Yes, I will be reading the next book.
