Dead Men Tell No Lies is an absolutely brilliant fantasy novel. Unlike many in the genre, it does not linger on ancient races or the mysteries of arcane magics but rather focuses on characters, story and intrigue. Think of it as a fantasy story as told through a pen reminiscent of John LeCarre. Tons of fun and lots of twists and turns to keep your interest. My only complaint is that I can't wait for the followup volumes.

Lewis crafts a cast of memorable characters centered around two fascinating and complex leads - Cantor, a quirky opportunist and born leader who nonetheless will do anything to ensure his own survival, and Jessica, a determined zealot with a mysterious connection to her deity. The setting and story resound of well-planned realism. Lewis pulls no punches in the story's action sequences, which are bloody ballets of mayhem, carefully crafted and well executed. Plenty of well-loved characters die as a result: brutally, suddenly, comedically, tragically, and from a very great height. The tone shifts effortlessly between personal and political intrigue, to high-seas adventure, to desperate edge-of-the-knife struggles, and back, all while maintaining a characteristically dark and realistic mood. The book is also studded with unexpected gems, such as instantly-memorable bit characters, ever-present gallows humor, and descriptions of exotic places and foods that evoke so strongly you can smell the saffron. Enjoyed every page. Very much looking forward to the second novel.

I haven't had this much fun reading a book in a long time! This has been a great escape with non stop action. I was never bored, which is important to someone like me who only has an hour or so at a time to read. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun escape from reality and doesn't mind a little good, clean, gory fun! EXCELLENT BOOK!!

This is a great novel for anyone who is wanting to read an intense, character driven tale. The story dives right into mystery and has you guessing the entire length of the book. Kudos to Lewis for a very unconventionally written fantasy novel that has you on the edge of your seat trying to keep up! I can't wait for the second book to find out what happens next!
