Editorial Reviews

2014 album from the Edinburgh trio. Young Fathers craft Pop songs disguised as Psychedelic Hip Hop disguised as an improvised explosive device. Three musicians comprise the bomb squad: Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole, and G Hastings. They are Scottish of African descent, outsiders by constitution and temperament. Comparisons have been made to Shabazz Palaces, but that analogue does not quite properly fit. Young Fathers have no ancestors. They just slap the listener with concussive bass, rugged sonic layering, and jagged harmonies stacking up like scar tissue. The sounds are scuffed and fucked up; your ears are filled with funky poison. Dead is a blur of instantaneous jams and vocal ideas. Words stick out like lost limbs in quicksand. Synthesizers soar like toxic birds. The percussion alternately cracks skulls and does miniature riffs to ribcages.

The opening track will always be my favorite, but man what a great album! Like a male M.I.A. they have world experimental mix type sound. Excellent rap and catchy hooks.

I'm surprised there aren't more comments about this album. Amazing rhythms, great variety, unpredictable and not at all derivative imo. It deserved the 2014 Mercury Prize. The band describes itself as a "Liberian/Nigerian/Scottish psychedelic hip-hop electro boy band". Yeah, I can see that. The Guardian described the album as "a strange and intoxicating musical universe that feels entirely their own”. Yeah, I agree with that, too. My only complaint...album too short at 34 minutes. Next time, more please.

I heard Young Fathers "Low" on my local college radio station and was blown away! They remind me a bit of TV on the Radio. They are a little weird sounding, but man, they can sing! I guess this is technically a rap album, but I think even those who don't like rap will appreciate it. The combination of the distorted synths, the soulful singing, and great rhymes gives them fresh sound that people need to hear! It's a shame that this album is so expensive- even when it comes out locally. I had to buy the mp3 version. That's my only complaint!
