The Carolus Deene mysteries are always interesting and fun. Leo Bruce is an author I always enjoy. A man is thrown overboard, or committed suicide, while on a cruise, and Carolus is hired to find out the truth. Characterizations are good and the story line quite interesting. I think if a reader tries Leo Bruce mysteries they will be very happy. I know I was and have purchased all his books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dead Man's Shoes, May 29, 2011
In this, the fourth Carolus Deene mystery by Leo Bruce (published in 1958), we meet Wilbury Larkin, who is sailing from Tangier to England to face a murder charge. Larkin manages to insult everyone on the boat before disappearing overboard shortly before the ship lands in England. The official verdict is suicide, but Deene has his doubts about this as well as the original murder case which Larkin was involved in.

The first half of this book is very entertaining, with a baffling mystery and more than a dozen suspects, as well as Bruce's usual humor (Deene's obnoxious teenage sidekick, Rupert Priggley, is not to be missed). Unfortunately, both the humor and the plot lag a little in the second half, as it gradually becomes pretty obvious who the real murderer is. Nevertheless, it's a fairly good read throughout.
