5.0 out of 5 stars Essential!!, May 8, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Deadbase Ten: The Complete Guide to Grateful Dead Songlists (Paperback)
If you are a taper, collector, trader, or just forgot what opened the second set in the last Philly JFK show, then this book is a must. Finally make a setlist for all those unidentified MP3s. Check off what you have to make trading easier. Get goosebumps over one of the transitions you forgot about. Kick yourself for working and not seeing the second night. If you collect you gotta have this or wait for the next one coming soon.

Have you ever looked for that perfect show? Ever wondered how many times "Me & My Uncle" was played? Ever was curious about who all were guests at Dead shows? Do you ever trade Grateful Dead music? If you answered "yes" to any of the questions above, this book is a MUST HAVE! It contains setlist from almost every Dead show played from 1965-1995 including helpful timings, "every time played", and "feedback" columns. If you are a Dead trader & you do not own a copy of Deadbase shame on you. It is the bible of Grateful Dead music. Peace.

Have fun, & if you get confused...LET THE MUSIC PLAY!

By A Customer
This review is from: Deadbase Ten: The Complete Guide to Grateful Dead Songlists (Paperback)
You HAVE GOT TO HAVE this book if you're into live Dead. It is ESSENTIAL. There is no substitute, only knockoffs. Superlatives fail, this book is the be-all and end-all of Dead volumes. GREAT fun to browse through, and CRUCIAL for identifying live Dead shows on tape!!! BUY IT!!! USE IT UNTIL THE PAGES DISINTEGRATE FROM USE!!! IT'S THE BEST!!!

If you have a grateful dead tape collection, you need this book. My friends and I have spent hours and hours looking through the pages, comparing shows, reading reviews and checking setlists against our collections. I can't say enough about it. BUY THIS BOOK!

The paperback is much easier to flip through than the hardcover.

5.0 out of 5 stars A road map of the Long Strange Trip, February 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Deadbase Ten: The Complete Guide to Grateful Dead Songlists (Paperback)
If you have tapes of live Dead shows but you don't know the date or place Deadbase can pinpoint the show. If you want to track down the first time the Grateful Dead played "Bertha" Deadbase is there. Regrets- this SHOULD be on CD but the softback makes a great workbook. Also, it is only live shows- no studio recordings.

5.0 out of 5 stars DeadBase X, December 12, 2011
This review is from: Deadbase Ten: The Complete Guide to Grateful Dead Songlists (Paperback)
Each volume of DeadBase has its own unique qualities. One year may have GarciaBase and the next WeirBase. One year may show venue maps while a different year may not.

DeadBase X lists the songlists (setlists) through 1995. This volume has the usual songbase with each song and when it was played over the years. This volume is as complete as it gets. It has everything you need that the very expensive DeadBase XI has except the steep price.

So should you buy this volume? That depends. I have every volume and if you also want the complete set, then yes, you must buy this one. But what if you just want the most complete volume out there? Then you have 2 choices. By the time DeadBase IX came out, which covers shows through 1994, Jerry was gone. However it has a section with the shows from 1995 so you could get this volume and have all the shows but the songbase is only through 1994.

I like DeadBase IX myself, but for most people DeadBase X would be the best volume to get. The Grateful Dead had stopped performing well before this book was compiled and it was printed a good year after Jerry's death. So there isn't anything this book misses. It has the songbase and venus list as accurate as it could be. There are the usual annual features as well as newer features. If you want only 1 volume and you want the songbase to be as complete as possible then you must get DeadBase X.

So what about DeadBase XI? Well if you have hundreds of dollars to spend on a book that has nothing to add to DeadBase X, then go for it. There were no additional shows to enter and it is basically a rehash of IX & X. If you have to have them all, then yes, get XI. I have seen it sold as "cheap" as $200 and offered for up to $750. But it offers nothing worth that price if you can get DeadBase X at a reasonable price. I bought my DeadBase X for only $20.00 and if you plan on really using it, by a cheap acceptable copy and save money. I prefer DeadBase IX because it is usually pretty fair priced (lower than X and way lower than XI) and has everything that X & XI have with the slight difference I stated above.

So, get DeadBase IX if you want a reasonable priced copy and you don't mind it all in 2 sections. However, you must get DeadBase X if you want the most complete up-to-date version at a fraction of the price for DeadBase XI.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny. You have GOT to have this book., July 18, 2003
This review is from: Deadbase Ten: The Complete Guide to Grateful Dead Songlists (Paperback)
If you have a huge collection of unlabeled tapes, this book will help you ID the tape by listing every song played with every song played BEFORE and AFTER it. It's a blast to just leaf through. There isn't another book like it anywhere. You really have to get a copy of this book. It's not like it's an optional purchase. The information in this book is not found anywhere else.
