Inspired, powerful music,

I agree with the last reviewer who said that the female vocals reminded him of Grace Slick. After the first time through this record, I said to myself, "Jefferson Airplane meets Solitude Aeturnus." The tone of the voice is Grace Slick, but the melodies are similiar to those of Solitude Aeturnus. Very heavy, but catchy riffs, move into accoustic and ambient soundscapes. This may be one of the most unique recordings I have ever heard. An absolute must for any fan of doom.

This is one of the albums I'd like to shoot into space so future alien races will understand why we even bothered making music. I got this CD a few years ago and every time I play it I'm stunned at how good it is. Why don't more people know about this band? All the so called "goth metal" fans should be swooning in ectasy over Madder Mortem, yet very few people are aware of them. In a perfect world they'd be recognized for the freakin' geniuses they are, but in the real world I guess they aren't too marketable. The lead singer doesn't have a "pretty" voice and none of the songs are about shagging, so most humans will never hear this album. That's a real shame. If your tasts are outside the main stream and you don't mind dark, bleak (and I mean BLEAK) music then you need to give this CD a try. It's an aquired tast but well worth the effort. I could go on and on about all the good points of this album but that would be boring and take up too much space. Just buy it!

One of the great albums from metals best kept secret,

Madder Mortem is one of those bands that's hard to categorize; not really because of their uniqueness, but because they are unique in a way which is really hard to describe. This is not a band you can just pick the hits from and "get them" instantly. You need to listen to the whole to get inside the sheer musical awesomeness. This is propably why they are not hailed as one of metals greatest, as they should be.
This is simply put one of the best metal albums I own, and I would highly recommend it to anyone that takes his music listening seriously, not just metalheads. Deadlands is one of those albums where I think genre really doesn't matter. If you know good music when you hear it, get this album. It's dark, it's heavy, it's beatiful and it's deeply emotional. I love it.

The lead singer for Madder Mortem totally sounds like Grace Slick, which is good, since I like Grace Slick. But the songs all sound a little too similar. Good if I'm in the mood for goth rock, but it doesn't wow me.
