I really wanted to LOVE this game,

I read numerous reviews on Amazon (and gaming websites) before I bought this game. Although it wasn't rated that spectacularly, I decided to buy it because I am a huge fan of the show. Although I tried to be as open-minded as I could be, I have to admit that Alaskan Storm does not seem to have long-term playability.
Before I tell you about the game itself, I do have to warn you about the installation (for the PC users out there). Please note that it takes an "extremely" long time to install. I do not mean the file transfer itself, I mean the time it takes for your computer to recognize the game and load the setup.exe application. The first time I put the game in my drive nothing happened for over ten minutes. I ended up going to Greenwave's website and on the FAQ it mentioned that some people reported the game taking over 15 minutes to load. So, for those who have stated that they could not install the game...put the CD back in your drive...don't touch anything...and wait...and wait....and something should eventually happen. As for the game itself, I thought the beginning (tutorial) was interesting. The game teaches you how to drive the boat, place pots, make repairs, etc. Every few minutes a video of Sig Hansen would pop up and give you some "real-life" information that coincides with what you are learning (i.e. after the game teaches you how to instruct your crew to chop ice, Sig explains the effects that ice has on your boat while fishing). I found the videos informative, but a little bit bothersome after a while...I wanted to get through the tutorial and be the captain of my own boat! After you pick your boat (and add a new name and custom paint job if you like), you are ready to hire your crew and begin fishing. This was exciting for about the first 45 minutes, but then the monotony of setting/retrieving pots really starts to get to you. Obviously, the pots are the main part of fishing and dealing with them makes up 75-80% of the game. Unfortunately, though, that 75-80% is the most boring part of playing. You can't speed up the pot process and you have to sit and wait one to two minutes (real-time) while your crew sets, baits and prepares each one. When the pot is ready you then ring the bell that signals the crew to launch the pot...and then you do it all over again...on 40 pot strings. The one saving grace is that every time a pot is launched it counts as five pots in the water, but even doing a string of eight is tedious. (For those of you that are thinking "of course fishing is 75% of the game...what did she expect?" I am trying to explain that the most important aspect...the fishing...seems to be the least thought-out part of the game) Just so you are aware, the PC version of Alaskan Storm does not allow you to play online with other players (as you can on X-box). I think a multi-player option would be helpful, as it would make the game more challenging and would probably keep up your level of interest. Lastly, you don't have the option to play the Time Bandit...which is not a deal-breaker, but is a little disappointing. Overall, even being a huge fan of this show did not save this game for me. I will likely only play it a few times and then put it back on the shelf. If you do end up buying it, I truly hope you aren't as disappointed as I am. Happy Fishing!

After several delays, the game is finally released. I've been playing for several hours, and it's quite fun. I haven't noticed any major glitches, although the game does get choppy sometimes even on my fast system, and it took FOREVER for the installation process to start. If you're familiar with, and a fan of the silly show like I am, then you'll probably enjoy the game. It's a good time passer. I thought the graphics might be a little better, but they're still pretty good. Definitely not cutting edge though. All in all, it's a very good game. If you're not a fan of the show, then it probably won't interest you. The game is currently fairly high priced at $37 too. IMO, it's definitely for die-hard "Deadliest Catch" fans only.

I got this game in the mail a week ago. The graphics are remarkable. The four "career" levels that take you through the game range by dificulty. Every now and then, Sig Hanson or a cast member of the "Deadliest Catch" interrupt your game with a video clip to help guide you along the way. "Missions" (1-4) have to be completed BEFORE the career mode is activated. The rest of the missions are unlocked during career game play. Overall the game is awesome! The only down fall is the actual setting of the pots & pulling up the catch has NO fast forward while that's happening. It makes for a little slow moving at times, but you can always turn up your speakers and hear the sea gulls and waves during this.

Deadliest Catch: Alaskan Storm is very thrilling, real, and entertaining. I love this game because you not only get to choose your crew, where to fish and etc.,but it also let's you choose your boat, customize it and best of all, name it. I will make this short and sweet, I LOVE THIS GAME!
I recommend this game for all ages old enough to play.

Generally when a simulation game is made for console and then converted to PC (with the exception of top road racing games) a lot is left out and traditional PC sim nuts are left wanting more.
I think there is much room for improvement in Deadliest Catch for those who will literally stay up all night (after night) studying water temperatures, ocean floor topography, bait choice, crew morals, provisions to load on the boat, complex info on other vessel's strings and habits, and basically all the complication of the real thing. I gave this 3 stars because I'm able to get what I can out of it and I've logged quite a few seasons. It's fun and not overly tedious.. its just too simplistic. What I really hope is that someone like UBI will buy this license and remake this game in a VASTLY more immersive manner with multi-players working for others (or above players) on ships. I can also imagine that you can play the Coast Guard at times, throw the hook for a living, search for the best prices on parts and crab sales, start out with a very small boat until you can afford another, have your players gain real experience.

I love this game. It would not work on my old PC but works great on my new one. The graphics are excellent and it is challenging enough for kids over 40.

I downloaded a trial on discovery.com and the graphics were way beyond my expectations. The download played smoothly on my computer so I bought it. The only bad thing I have to say is it loads kind of slow. This game is easy depending on the difficulty you choose. I love this game I play this game every day.

Good game that challanges the player to the limit. Play missions, or fish around for crab. Choose between 5 boats, customize them, get a crew at the local bar, buy gas, pots and fuel, and fish it to the limit. After the season, give the crew their pay, and get the boat ready for the next season with minor or major changes. Also gives a chance to learn how the real alaskan fishermen fish for red gold, so it is also educational.

i finally got the game after hearing rumors it wasn't that bad..It is fun because it's different and there are things to do, but like many here said, not enough. If there were more gadgets in the cabin [better radio options/sonar/better gauges, maps, gps etc] better textures, more variety in dialog or weather or on-boat equipment and tasks...it would be more fun than watching the endless seagulls doing their mechanical loop [inside the bridge no less!]
The game has its charms here and there, i laughed the first time at some of the crew responses to things, but there are a lot of bugs as well. Often after a crew accident the rest of my guys just stand there on deck, and won't do anything until the main first-aid [helper] is done and comes back out. Problem is, sometimes they don't, and are just stuck inside the boat, and no one responds to your task changes....frustrating. I've found saving and getting out of the game then going back in sometimes respecify this issue...There are other graphical flickering and some pretty wonky boat physics in rough seas, watching the waves clip right through all your boat and cabin textures...which in reality your boat would have been knocked upside down easily. I've been in seas where my boat was litearlly almost past 90 degrees horizontal and it just bounces back to the other side...i guess there is no rolling these baby's. Also what i really miss, is some kind of stat tracking for your career! Where's your total amounts of fish caught per season? Where's your stats so you can see your progress and/or compare yourself to the other ships? Where's some rpg experience gaining of your captain and crew members? nothin...nadda...just a quick peak at what lbs. and $ you got at the end of each 'season' and once you hit next...the data is gone... :( All in all, if it coulda been modded/fixed [the dev went under i'm told =no support]it would have been a classic. As it is, its a unique one-off, that is fun for the fans, for a little while. But I'm afraid after your career 5-10th season, you will have it on your shelf. It is somewhat collectible though! I still like it for what it is. check me out![]
