Editorial Reviews

Venture into the dark waters of the Bering Sea with eight crab fishing boats and their crews through the world's two most difficult and dangerous fishing seasons. Captain Sig Hansen of the Northwestern returns to match his skills against his old rival, Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie, and a new challenger, rookie captain Blake Painter of the Maverick. With rough waters and fierce weather, the captains and their crews will be pushed to their limits of mental and physical endurance in their search for the elusive red king crab and opilio crab. Experience the extraordinary daring, skill and endurance required for this time-honored trade in these 11 episodes, and enjoy bonus behind-the-scenes footage capturing the difficulty of day-to-day filming on the rugged seas.

Always like Deadliest Catch, and have missed Phil Harris since he passed...this was a great way to go back and watch some episodes where he was still on the show.
George Waldrop
The backstories come full circle and you really feel like you are right there on deck experiencing both the highs and the lows of crab fishing.

Fans of the show will definitely want to add this season to their collection. Don't worry if you haven't watched the show before; Mike Rowe's narration adds enough information about the crews, crab fishing, and their past experiences to keep a new viewer from getting lost.

It's all here; Blake's rookie season, Phil's frustrations with his ships AND his offspring-turned-crew, the breathtaking Man Overboard rescue by the Time Bandit....

"Deadliest Catch" is reality tv at its best. We're given working-class heroes as a "cast" instead of what a network thinks is hip and photogenic, and VERY REAL danger. The tragedies of the ships Big Valley and Ocean Challenger make the title more than "watch this kids" melodrama; good, ordinary people have lost their lives. (And, lest anyone think this is exploitive - far from it. The tragedies are shown by the filmmakers for what they are - heartbreaking grief and loss).

I never thought about the danger and backbreaking work it took to get that seafood dinner onto my plate. As you watch the show, be sure to say a prayer for the men and women who have made the sea their life and career.

I just received my DVD set today, and after watching the first two episodes, I''m pretty sure they are out of order. The episode titles are correct on the disk one menu, but selecting episode one plays episode two, and selecting episode two plays episode one. I just checked wikipedia's episode guide to verify. I've only watched the first two episodes, so if I find other problems I'll post again.

Aside from the fact that several episodes were out of order (no idea why) we enjoyed this very much. It was great to be able to watch with no annoying advertisements interrupting the program.

This is an addicting little series from the Discovery Channel. The captains have become folk heroes of sorts. I turned into Martha Stewart one day and she was interviewing Sig Hansen and his brother while cooking a crab dish for them.

No matter how much the crew earns on these crab runs there is not a viewer on the planet who would say their overpaid. They have sleep depravation, injuries, work cold and wet, bicker amongst themselves, wrestle 700 pound pots and face the real threat of being washed overboard and freezing in the arctic waters but they struggle onward so we can have our appetizer of crab with drawn butter.

Us loyal viewers learn the jargon of the crews and long to learn more of our favorite captains: Blond and handsome Sig Hansen of the Northwestern, acerbic Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie, the wiley Hillstrand brothers (Johnathan, Andy and Neal) of the Time Bandit.

This is a show that you never lose interest in watching and is well worth your time and money. I'm going to give this same review to each season. bg

This is the best television series ever! Every episode is funny and tense and all-around fascinating to watch. I will never again complain about the cost of buying crab given that people are risking their lives to catch it. I definitely recommend that you try out this series if you have never seen it. Discovery does a fabulous job making this series, especially given the risks their people are taking to film this series. Who would have thought that watching people go crab fishing could make such interesting drama?

DEADLIEST CATCH is one of the most riveting series on TV.

The work alone is incrediblly dangerous and difficult on heaving decks in freezing seas with wind and weather assailing every footstep. The evidence of this lies in the 90 lost souls over the past twenty years of those who ventured to challenge Alaska's Bering Sea.

But the real drama of the series lies in the characters themselves; the Wizard's captain Keith, Jonathan of Time Bandit, the damaged Phil aboard Cornelia Marie (and his sons), Sig and his family on the Northwestern and so many other brave and hearty souls. They become like part of the family as we cheer their victories, grieve their losses and laugh with them in the joy of their work and play. You come to love Jacob, the great-hearted kid on the Cornelia Marie and to see through Jonathan's quirkiness to his heart for his men and his ship. Sig's toughness metls as he reveals the depth of his pain in losing friends and comrades to the Bering Sea.

This series is a brilliant, vivid, dramatic testimony to the "men who go down to the sea in ships." May God bless and keep them.

From the very first episode of Deadliest Catch that I watched I've been absolutely hooked on this series. Despite having 200 channels of Cable TV HD service I very rarely watch tv. Most of the time I spend on my computer with movies playing in the background.

However I make sure I am watching Discovery HD every Tuesday night to catch the latest episode. Having said that it only made sense for me to actually own all the seasons of DC on DVD. Season 3 is really the season where DC starts to shine. Now focused on a smaller set of boats, the audience really gets a chance to get into the lives of each boat crew in depth. The backstories come full circle and you really feel like you are right there on deck experiencing both the highs and the lows of crab fishing.

Blake missing out on his chance to become captain, Nate being arrested in port, unfortunate situations requiring Bairdi crab fishing instead of opilio, it's all there waiting for you to watch. If you are a fan of the show this season certainly won't be a disappointment to you.
