5.0 out of 5 stars The best introduction to worldview thinking
More people should know about this book! "The Deadliest Monster" puts forward a bold premise: that there is a fundamental difference between Christian thinking and every other approach to the world that's out there. 3.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and well written but simplistic
In this engaging, well-written book, Baldwin asserts that Christianity is validated by the fact that it is the only worldview that teaches the reality of inherent human sinfulness. He runs through the list of ten "major" worldviews (interestingly, even Jehovah's Witnesses make it on the list) and shows how they downplay human depravity and make ourselves the focus of our...

5.0 out of 5 stars The best introduction to worldview thinking, March 1, 2002
More people should know about this book! "The Deadliest Monster" puts forward a bold premise: that there is a fundamental difference between Christian thinking and every other approach to the world that's out there. To make his case, Baldwin employs one of the most inventive metaphors in worldview literature, appropriating Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as the non-Christian 'monster' and Stevenson's Mr. Hyde as the Christian 'monster.' This echoes B.B. Warfield's distinction in "The Plan of Salvation" between the Christian view that God saves man, and the non-Christian view that man saves himself -- but Baldwin pulls it off with so much class that you never suspect how deep the insight is until you've already understood it. That's one of the things that makes "The Deadliest Monster" a superb introduction to Christian worldview -- it equips readers with a simple, effective tool to grasp the worldview concept and use it to start thinking cricially about their culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Book on Worldview, March 5, 2001
By A Customer
I was pained to see that this book is out of print. This would be an excellent introduction to worldviews, but it was helpful even after I had read more famous books like How Should We Then Live. If you would like to see the differences between how Christians view the world and how non-Christians view it, this is a great book. If you're interested in seeing how Christianity affects not just religious opinions, but all of life, this is also a good place to start. The Deadliest Monster avoids both the "head without heart" and the "heart without head" approaches to Christianity and talks about loving God with all of one's being. It's also more lively than many worldview books.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book is Great!!!!!!!, September 17, 2001
Hi! My name is Hannah (don't be fooled by the name they put in here...it's my mom's), and I am from Texas. I am a teenager, and I am reading this book for a school assignment (the author, Mr. B, is my Humanities teacher). I am writing this assignment to say not only is it an awesome book, but it is readable for people my age. It is a great book because it is so well researched and supported, and he makes everything quite clear for everyone. Buy it -- it is a great introduction to worldviews. I understand Christianity a lot more now, and I know exactly how my new age flute teacher is incorrect in her beliefs. Thanks for writing such a great book, Mr. B -- I hope everyone gets a chance to read it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excelent intro to world views, March 3, 2009

This review is from: The Deadliest Monster: A Christian Introduction to Worldviews (Paperback)
"The Deadliest Monster" introduces several of the world's most prominent worldviews from a Christian standpoint. In it, Jeff Baldwin implements the stories of "Frankenstein" and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" to distinguish the largest difference between Christianity and every other worldview, bringing in the "nature vs. nurture" question. He presents a very intelligent and insightful examination of these worldviews that is strikingly deep.

Baldwin's work is well studied and well structured and is a good, informative read for Christians and non-Christians alike. It is intuitive and enjoyable, challenging of your mind and never boring. The book is an excellent source of knowledge for anyone who is interested in worldviews and what is behind those worldviews. It is a deep, comprehensive, and overall great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, Great for Anyone interested in Worldview Critique, June 25, 2000

This book is a great introduction to basic (and not so basic) worldview concepts for anyone who holds even a slight interest in the subject.

Good even if you are not a Christian, this book presents a clear view of many of the dominant philosophies of our day and goes indepth on the "nature vs. nurture" arguement.

I am somewhat biased (Mr. Baldwin was my literature teacher), but in my opinion this is a must read for anyone who would like to understand what and why most people believe what they believe.

It's never boring and very down to earth, while at the same time challenging to your mind and beliefs. Go ahead and give it a read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Encouraging, August 26, 2010

This review is from: The Deadliest Monster: A Christian Introduction to Worldviews (Paperback)
This was an excellent book. I had originally chose this book because I knew it was going to cover some of the "worldviews" that are out there and I wanted to keep up-to-date. This book offered much more than that. J.F. Baldwin has a easy to understand writing technique. I've grown closer to the Lord after reading this book and was encouraged to share what I learned/or was reminded about with my children. He stresses the importance of putting 100% of our trust in God and not in man. This is a book I'll read once a year as a reminder that I am a child of God and there is nothing that he can't do.

I've been a Christian ever since I can remember. This book was instrumental in allowing me to see the big picture and how our worldview affects every area of our life. I am so excited by being able to clearly see how important our worldview is that I want to share this book with the rest of my family and friends. A must read for every Christian home.

5.0 out of 5 stars an insightful introduction into understanding worldviews, September 17, 2001
By A Customer
When i read this book i was simply blown away. It has given me a much better understanding into the comprehension of worldviews. This is simply a must-read for everyone out there, don't worry if you've never heard of it. It is a reprint so the new publisher should give him more visibility and coverage. i recommend this for anyone out there, even if you are not a Christian or don't eveb have a slight interest in the topic. This is the most informative and intellectually challenging look at the subject that i have ever read, comparable to C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity" in its depth and magnitude.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, August 18, 2011
This review is from: The Deadliest Monster: A Christian Introduction to Worldviews (Paperback)
This book is a comprehensive overview of worldviews. Baldwin is a master at compiling thoughts and excerpts from different authors and thinkers whose timeless insight helps shed light on the modern issues of today. This book focuses on how Christianity is radically different from other systems of belief in the world.

Books in this genre tend to come across as preachy or belligerent. Baldwin, however, excellently presents material from both a secular and non-secular viewpoint. I highly recommend this book for students in high school and college. This book will provide you with knowledge of "the other side", and help you understand where others are coming from. The Deadliest Monster helps you to comprehend why Christianity is vastly different from other religions, and gives you tools to share it with others.
