Amazon.com Review

This mystery, part of the popular Lindsay Gordon series, is set in Glasgow, Scotland. Author Val McDermid, who grew up in a Scottish mining community, captures the sharp, colorful dialects of characters who live in newly renovated yuppie flats, low rent dives, and everything in between. On her way to solve the mystery of one friend's murder and another's conviction for the same, scrappy, soft-hearted journalist Lindsay Gordon learns a thing or two she didn't expect--or want-- to learn about the complications of lesbian love.

From Booklist

In her third outing, lesbian ace reporter and amateur detective Lindsay Gordon returns from self-imposed European exile to Glasgow, Scotland, to find her estranged lover Cordelia, who--surprise!--has a new honey, the fetching Claire Ogilvie, whose ex-lover Jackie Mitchell is behind bars for murdering Alison Maxwell, who was another ex of Lindsay's as well as of about half of Glasgow and the defensive line of the L.A. Raiders. Against her better judgment, intrepid Lindsay takes on the job of securing Jackie's release, only to find herself caught up in a maze of lies, alibis with tricky time schemes, blackmail, prostitution, and more as she discovers a seemingly endless supply of suspects with ample motivation to kill the conniving Alison. McDermid's depictions of Glasgow police procedures are a bit incredible, but strongly drawn characters and interesting use of U.K. slang keep the story moving smartly. Whitney Scott

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this deadline, February 29, 2000
This review is from: Deadline for Murder: The Third Lindsay Gordon Mystery (Kate Brannigan Mysteries) (Paperback)
Veteran mystery writer Val McDermid, in this third installment of the Lindsay Gordon series, presents with care an intense potboiler where, regardless of the outcome, emotions are bound to explode. If Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone has a lesbian alter ego, Lindsay is it; her ability to keep her cool and her focus, especially during instances of innuendo when alone with her ex-love, is especially admirable.

Fans of the traditional "whodunit" will enjoy this tale of passion and deception--in more ways than one--and Lindsay's search to find the truth, even at the cost of a friendship. A smooth pace in action and dialogue moves the reader quickly through the 200-plus pages of Deadline for Murder, and keeps one entralled until Lindsay does meet that deadline.

Val McDermid can write and I'm always grateful for her lesbian characters who just happen to be lesbian rather than that being a plot device. Lately though her stuff has had a lot of gratuitous violence and in the last one a rape scene written to titillate - as if there weren't enough of those written by men. So it was great to find her older series with a more straight forward mystery, well plotted and with interesting characters. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ohhhh ohhh ohhh..., January 19, 2005
This review is from: Deadline for Murder: The Third Lindsay Gordon Mystery (Kate Brannigan Mysteries) (Paperback)
This little book is fabulous in a way I can't specifically explain, lest I give away the book's intimate secret's. ;) Anyway, in order to really get the most out of this novel, you need to have read the prior two books in the Lindsay Gordon series. If you have done that, I can pretty much gaurentee you will enjoy, or at least have a powerful reaction to this little critter...
