DEADLINE! The Book a Serial Novel by Paula L. Tutman,

This review is from: Deadline! (Paperback)
I wanted to reach over & grab the sequel, but it wasn't there! Pooh!! The storyline was riveting. The characters keep you wanting to know more. PS is a character that most women can relate to whether or not you are in the news business. Book 2, WHEN, WHEN, WHEN???!!!

Read the book in 1 weekend -- couldn't put it down. Great character development and exciting storyline. Can't believe the author left the readers hanging like that! Can't wait for Book #2!!

Decent story, poorly edited,

There are about 800 pages in the two volumes of "Deadline!" With a good editor, this story could have been told well in 300 pages or so.
Part of the problem is that "Deadline!" is loaded with gratuitous asides about the incompetence of virtually everyone in the television business except for the lead character, a reporter. The author is a TV reporter and says the story is based on something that actually happened to her, so it seems likely she's settling scores with former co-workers. The descriptions of a TV reporter's life, on camera and off, certainly sound authoritative and are often interesting. Unfortunately, there are more than a few reminders that TV reporters typically write words only they will have to read. Spelling and grammar errors abound throughout the book (twice, for example, "breaks" is used for "brakes"). Ironically, at one point the lead character berates her boss by saying, "If you're going to produce a newscast, learn to speak English properly would you?"

This was an interesting first book. There were lots of twists and turns but in the end very little resolution. Perhaps that was to entice you to read the second book in the series.
I found it very disconcerting that there was so much left unfinished in the first book that you had to read the second book to find out what happened.
