Book Description

Dawson Scott is a well-respected journalist recently returned from Afghanistan. Haunted by everything he experienced, he's privately suffering from battle fatigue which is a threat to every aspect of his life. But then he gets a call from a source within the FBI. A new development has come to light in a story that began 40 years ago. It could be the BIG story of Dawson's career one in which he has a vested interest.

Soon, Dawson is covering the disappearance and presumed murder of former Marine Jeremy Wesson, the biological son of the pair of terrorists who remain on the FBI's Most Wanted list. As Dawson delves into the story, he finds himself developing feelings for Wesson's ex-wife, Amelia, and her two young sons. But when Amelia's nanny turns up dead, the case takes a stunning new turn, with Dawson himself becoming a suspect. Haunted by his own demons, Dawson takes up the chase for the notorious outlaws. . .and the secret, startling truth about himself.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Domestic terrorism provides the backdrop for this uneven romantic thriller from bestseller Brown (Low Pressure). Dawson Scott, a veteran journalist traumatized by his work in Afghanistan, rejects the fluff piece his editor urges him to write, and instead travels to Georgia to cover the trial of Willard Strong, accused of murdering his wife and her lover, Jeremy Wessum, and feeding them to his fighting dogs. Dawson can't resist reporting on the case after his godfather, a former FBI agent, tips him off that Wessum might be the son of a pair of famous terrorists. The journalist comes prepared for some courtroom drama, but what he's unprepared for is falling in love with Wessum's former wife, Amelia. The death of the nanny of Amelia's two young sons suggests that a murderer may still be on the loose. Dawson and Amelia's contrived, torrid love affair undermines an otherwise straightforward whodunit. Readers should be prepared for some cringe-worthy dialogue before reaching the propulsive final scenes. Agent: Maria Carvainis, Maria Carvainis Agency. (Sept.)

"Deft characterizations and eye for detail make this a winner...Satisfying, vintage Brown storytelling."—Kirkus on DEADLINE

"DEADLINE is both a breathtaking and heartbreaking story; one that will stay with the reader long after the book is finished."—freshfiction.com

"Sandra Brown meticulously develops a stellar cast of characters, weaving them into a tense, gritty thriller that offers numerous plot twists leading to stunning revelations and a nail-biting conclusion....I'm now wondering why I waited so long to enjoy this talented author's work. I highly recommend Brown's Low Pressure. Its multilayered, intricate and suspenseful storyline is enriched with vivid descriptions and crisp dialogue. If you enjoy romantic suspense, Low Pressure is a book you'll want to read in one sitting."—USA Today on LOW PRESSURE

"A good old-fashioned thriller, and a winner..."—Kirkus on LOW PRESSURE

4.0 out of 5 stars A Complex Mystery and Romance September 24, 2013
By gpangel
Format:Kindle Edition
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Deadline by Sandra Brown is a Grand Central Publication and will be released on September 24, 2013. Amelia is a widow with two children. She has removed herself from public life as much as possible. Her deceased husband, Jeremy, was murdered by his lover's husband and now Amelia is having to testify at his trial. This has brought out reporters and other media, causing Amelia to attempt to keep a low profile. However, she never suspects someone would go so far as to move in right next door and break in to her home and spy on her. Which is exactly what Dawson did, and he got he caught- by Amelia. Dawson, like Amelia's former husband, is suffering for PTSD. Dawson was a reporter covering the war effort. He came home with horrible nightmares and has resorted to popping pills and drinking too much. When he gets a phone call about covering this trial, he has other reasons for agreeing to it. He never expected to be so drawn to Amelia or her two boys. Amelia is furious at being spied on, so she and Dawson get off to a rather rocky start. But, Amelia's boys just love Dawson and before long, Amelia grudgingly opens up to Dawson a little. However, there have been some rather odd occurrences going on around Amelia's home. She suspects Dawson at first, but he swears he knows nothing about it. Then during a storm, when Amelia's nanny goes into to town for some supplies and never comes back, the investigation opens up the possibility that Jeremy may not have been murdered by his lover's husband after all. While we are pondering on all that, we are given excepts into Jeremy's childhood through a diary his mother kept. Jeremy's parents were vigilantes and his father was particularly cruel. Jeremy didn't fit in with that lifestyle so his parents gave him to a friend to raise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sandra Brown is a sure buy for me October 8, 2013
By BeMa
Format:Kindle Edition
I own and have read every one of Sandra's books. Okay, some I have read numerous times. I read this one in a day and didn't get a thing done except the book. Loved it. Her characters are so real. I'm not going to do a byplay of the book, I think others have done that quite nicely. This book has a twist that I didn't see coming. I know some did. I loose myself in Sandra's books and don't 'look' for twists...I just snuggle in and enjoy. I will read this one again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mystery/thriller?...falls a little short. September 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've been waiting for Ms. Brown's Deadline for many weeks, but it falls a little short of good. I wasn't impressed with this mystery/thriller, in my estimation no romance involved. The plot was overlaid and overlaid and overlaid, but I still had the mystery solved almost from the beginning.

Dawson Scott an investigative reporter returns from Afghanistan with PTSD. He goes to Savannah at the request of FBI Agent Headly, his godfather, to check out the trial of a man accused of killing Jeremy Wesson, the son of Carl Wingert, the criminal who got away from him decades ago. Agent Headly has hunted this man for decades and wants the case solved before he retires. Dawson sees Amelia, Jeremy Wesson's ex wife; falls in lust kind of. Although the prosecutor did not have a body, it appears he had a good case that Jeremy had been murdered. Following starts a story of murder, stalking, snipers, and bumbling local police with over large egos getting in the way of apprehending Carl Wingert, a megalomaniac sociopath with thoughts to destroy anything and anyone who gets in his way. I'll not go into any further description of the story because I don't want to ruin it for others.

The book was well written with a lot of twist and turns, but I did not see a great connection/chemistry between Dawson and Amelia, the supposed heroine. All the characters were good, but none was outstanding. I was disappointed in the ending because I didn't really see a HEA but maybe others might.

Good reading all.

Very slow for the first part of the book. It wasn't until the last that it got good. It was almost like two people wrote it. The last part was more like Sandra Brown.
