Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The second appearance of Kate Kinsella, introduced in Deadly Errand , finds the English nurse/PI in the hire of fellow nurse, Vanessa Wootten, who tells Kate she is being stalked. Kate's landlord and friend Hubert, a funeral director, warns her to be wary of the reputedly neurotic Vanessa, who has been admitted to the hospital for a drug overdose and who claims that a former lover, police officer Paul Oakby, raped her. An elderly patient of Vanessa dies, and Kate finds an ambiguous message implicating Vanessa written on the old woman's mirror. Kate follows up on the list of suspects Vanessa gives her, but finds that none is capable of tailing the woman, including the fiance of Vanessa's estranged sister, who was incapacitated in a car accident two years before. After Oakby is killed and the message "You Next, V" is found nearby, Vanessa vanishes, leaving Kate struggling to reassess her evidence in order to save her client's life. Kate's quixotic manner is tempered by Hubert's dourness, making the two an interesting pair to watch.

From Library Journal

The sequel to Deadly Errand ( LJ 7/92) again features private-eye nurse Kate Kinsella in a traditional British mystery. While on duty at Longborough General Hospital, Kinsella meets a paranoid patient (also a nurse) who fears a murderous pursuer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smart and original, November 7, 2001

This review is from: Deadly Admirer (Paperback)
In Vanessa Wooten, Christine Green has created an annoying and unreliable victim for Kate Kinsella to protect. She claims she's being stalked, but she's apparently been saying this for years. She's paranoid and more than a little strange. Right up until the end of this strange little book, we don't have any better feeling than Kinsella does whether the threat is anywhere except in Vanessa's head.

The book does get tangled up in its own feet at a certain point by introducing too many characters and too much information. Still, for me, it gives a lot of hope for the writer/series.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first Kate Kinsella mystery that I really loved, April 21, 2009
This review is from: Deadly Admirer (Paperback)
I think it's the screwball character of Vanessa Wooten that really made this movie for me. The hopelessly paranoid (or is she?) client makes a great contrast for the rather inept detective, and there is honest suspense towards the end as to the fate of poor Vanessa.BTW, one reviewer reviewed the wrong book...no haunted houses in this book. Sorry about that.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Kate Kinsella Mystery, April 28, 2001
This review is from: Deadly Admirer (Paperback)
I enjoyed following the sleuth Kate Kinsella as she roamed the town pciking up clues. It was a very light yet intriguing read and reminded me of the TV show 'Murder She Wrote'.
