More About the Author

I write mysteries and thrillers. I live in Portland, Oregon with my family.

When I was 11, I sent a short story about a six-foot tall frog who loved peanut butter to Roald Dahl, the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He took it to lunch and showed it to the editor of a British children's magazine - and she asked to publish the story! (For no money, which might have been a warning about how hard it is to make a living writing.)

My dream of writing went dormant until I was in my 30s, working at a corporate job, and started writing books on the side. Those first few years - when I wrote a book a year, worked full time, and had a baby - are now thankfully a blur. Now I'm very lucky to make a living doing what I love. I have written 15 novels for adults and teens, with more on the way. My books have gotten starred reviews, been chosen for IndieNext, translated into eight languages and won awards in several states. And Face of Betrayal, which I co-wrote with Lis Wiehl, was on the New York Times bestseller list for four weeks.

I have also reviewed literary fiction, YA literature, and mysteries and thrillers for the Oregonian, and have written articles for both The Writer and Writers Digest.

In 2014, look for two books: The Body in the Woods, the first in the Point Last Seen series, and A Deadly Business, co-written with Lis Wiehl.

Taken from my site:
Mia Quinn is a prosecutor in the Violent Crimes Unit of Seattle, Washington. She’s also a recent widow because of a seemingly innocent car crash her husband was involved in. In this story, Mia is asked some tough questions surrounding her husband’s death. Was it really an accident because he was driving too fast? Or was there something more sinister going on because of her husband’s job? Some things just aren’t adding up surrounding that fateful night.
On top of seeking answers concerning her late husband, Mia must also decide the fate of three young boys who committed a horrible crime resulting in tragedy for one family. Mia must decide whether to charge these fifteen year-old boys as juveniles or adults. One thing is for certain for Mia Quinn in this fantastically-written story. NOTHING is black and white the way it would first seem.

I was very excited to get an opportunity to review a book-especially one of mystery and intrigue like this one. A Deadly Business certainly did not disappoint! There were several twists and turns in this story that made it all the more fun to read. I practically consumed each page as it was a wonderfully written and very descriptive page-turner. I appreciated that it wasn’t challenging with lots of unnecessary jargon or vocabulary. It was simplistic without feeling dumbed-down. I immediately felt for the character, Mia Quinn as she is a widow and a mom of two kids who is trying desperately to be both mother and father. After her husband’s death (which left her deep in debt because of his own secrets), Mia is forced to go back to work as a lawyer. And not that she doesn’t love her job; she does!

This is my first foray into the Mia Quinn series, but it won't be my last. I've already made plans to read the first and third books in this series. The book started a little slow. Because of the pacing, I came thisclose to almost making this a DNF - but I persevered, mainly because the plot was starting to really grab my attention. I won't recap the plot, since it's easily found in the book jacket and Amazon's website.
Although "A Deadly Business" was not as suspenseful as other books I've read in this genre, I liked the main character Mia. I liked her sense of justice and compassion, and family strength. It's rare that I read a suspense/thriller novel that delves so much into the main protagonist's (usually, a female) personal life. Thus, it was refreshing to read about, at least for me.
Also, I liked that the main male protagonist wasn't the stereotypical macho, strong, but silent hero that populates this genre. However, the trope that the author did keep was that he was in law enforcement, but in this novel at least, the twist was, he (Charlie) was not the ONLY hero of the day!
That takes us to Eli. Yet again, I was surprised that he was who he seemed to be - a decent father, attorney, and law professor. So the twist for me was that there was no twist here.
The writing was solid, and the plot was fairly absorbing. Indeed, I read this novel in the span of one day. The other aspects of this novel (maybe this series? I'll find out) was that it was fairly clean in language, the gore was not obscene, and there were no sex scenes. I guess I'm just used to these things being present in this genre, so this was surprising for me.
As I said, this was my first, but not last Mia Quinn novel. I just hope the other novels will live up to my expectation.

Oh.Be.Still.My.Heart! I have waited (it seems like forever ) for the next Mia Quinn mystery. And here it is!
Mia is a prosecutor. And usually her job is stressful and full but today when that twenty-two-year old walks into the courtroom Mia senses/knows that he blames her for his predicament. Uh!Yeah! She did the crime! Honestly these criminals make one SO angry. As the reader can tell this is a one great suspense read! I was SO angry at the criminal . . . a good sign that an author brings out emotion in the reader.
Mia is a single mom because her husband was killed in a deadly car accident. But now Detective Carlson telling her the one thing she really doesn't want to hear. Her husband's accident was probably not an accident! And to! Her husband seems to have been into some shady dealings.
Poor Mia! She is a single mom who wants to blend into the woodwork. She doesn't want these criminals to know that she has a family and where she lives.
This is one of Lis Wiehl's best books! The suspense is, well for a lack of another word, suspenseful! {smile} One of those I'm looking over my shoulder as I read in bed at night! Yeah! That good!

Format: Hardcover
Mia Quinn, a prosecutor in Seattle's King County Violent Crimes Unit, deciding if three fifteen year old boys, whose reckless actions horrifically and severely injured a young woman, should be tried as juveniles or adults. Also Mia, a recent widow, left with two children has discovered a few secrets her husband harbored as well as clues leading to the fact his demise may not have been an accident but rather murder.

Full of suspense, mystery and a little romance as well as civil issues prompting the reader to ask themselves poignant questions. The pace is quick keeping your full attention. The characters felt wooden, the narrative offers a mixed bag of genres with a sense of it being a tad jumbled. The transitions seemed rough and a clear tense feeling between all the players interaction was awkward at best.

A good read with a few flaws, nonetheless entertaining. The fast pace allows the reader to rip through and allow forgiveness for hiccups. Provoking, plenty of legal aspects to educate without being boring. definitely NOT a time waster.
