Book Description

March 1, 2011 A Books by the Bay Mystery
While walking her poodle, Olivia Limoges discovers a dead body buried in the sand. Could it be connected to the bizarre burglaries plaguing Oyster Bay, North Carolina? At every crime scene, the thieves set up odd tableaus: a stick of butter with a knife through it, dolls with silver spoons in their mouths, a deck of cards with a missing queen. Olivia realizes each setup represents a cliché. And who better to decode the cliché clues than her Bayside Book Writers group?

5.0 out of 5 stars Stories within a story... March 3, 2011
By Marlyn
Format:Mass Market Paperback
On the Saturday before Labor Day, while walking her dog on the beach near her home, Olivia Limoges comes across a dead body, obviously the result of foul play. It soon occurs to Olivia, who is helping her friend Laurel write an article for the local paper, that the murder might be related to a rash of home burglaries in the seaside town of Oyster Bay, North Carolina.

As a member of the Bayside Book Writers Group, Police Chief Sawyer Rawlings feels comfortable asking his fellow writers to help him ponder the available evidence. He doesn't expect that Olivia and the other members of the group will get involved in a more active way and possibly put themselves in danger.

Ellery Adams (a pseudonym for J.B. Stanley) is a gifted writer. Not only is A Deadly Cliché the sort of book one wants to read all the way through in one sitting, during the course of the story Olivia edits sample chapters of the books that members of the writers group are working on. The chapters are included, and they could easily turn into engrossing stories themselves!

The volume includes the first chapter of the third book in the series, to be titled The Last Word.

Olivia is enjoying her quiet life in Oyster Bay, North Carolina. The Boot Top Bistro, her five-star restaurant is doing well and she has her eye on a building she is thinking of buying, renovating and converting into a new waterfront restaurant, to be called The Crab Shack. The Bayside Book Writers continue to meet weekly to critique and discuss each others works-in-progress. They have not only become great friends, but great support systems for each other during the writing process. Olivia, with her beloved poodle and loyal companion Captain Haviland at her side, never thought she would be close to this motley crew of characters. But here she is, friends with a computer geek, a stay-at-home mom, a bartender, and the police chief. Ah, the police chief.... Could there be romance in the air? Or is that simply a fresh ocean breeze?

On the cusp of a potential major hurricane, and while the citizens of Oyster Bay are busy preparing, Olivia is on her morning walk hunting for treasures when she stumbles on a body buried in the sand, naked as the day he was born, with just a bucket over his head and shovel in hand. Not only does Chief Rawlings have his hands full with this murder and the impending hurricane, but there have also been some bizarre home robberies he has been working. While the robberies are normal in the sense that the homeowners are gone while they are burglarized, and the big ticket items are taken, something odd is left in their wake. The robbers' MO is to leave something behind that represents a different cliché. Now it is up to the Bayside Book Writers to put their plotting skills to use and help Chief Rawlings figure out not only who murdered the man on the beach, but to figure out if and/or how it may be related to the robberies.

Olivia continues to be the fairy G-dmother to her friends, as well as to the town and people of Oyster Bay. She continues to do the little things that will enrich their lives, at times without them even knowing she is the one behind the good dead. But with everything else going on around her, Olivia could be in for the surprise of her life. Could the father that was once presumed dead, lost at sea during a terrible storm, actually be alive? What will Olivia find when she seeks out the truth? And more importantly, will she be able to handle what she finds out? Will the truth set her free?

Ellery Adams has another solid hit on her hands with her second Books By The Bay Mystery (see A Killer Plot). I loved seeing the continued growth in the friendship between Olivia and the rest of the Bayside Book Writers. And I give huge props to the author for not only writing one amazing story, but for also writing a new chapter for each of the writers' works-in-progress. That takes a huge amount of talent; talent this author clearly displays. Oyster Bay, and its inhabitants are, the perfect blend of the comforts one would find at home and the ease of a blissful summer vacation by the bay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Trip To Oyster Bay!!! March 3, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
We are back in Oyster Bay, North Carolina with Olivia and The Bayside Book Writers. The quiet seaside town has seen a rash of burglaries of late and as Olivia and her wonderful dog Haviland, have discovered a body while on their morning walk along the beach. Add to that there's a tropical storm headed straight for Oyster Bay and you have the beginning of a great Books By The Bay Mystery.

Are all the crimes connected? The Bayside Book Writers are busy deciphering the clues left by the thieves. At one scene a stick of butter in left out on the counter with a knife through it. Another is a deck of cards with a queen missing. Yet at another, dolls with silver spoons in their mouths. It doesn't take Olivia long to realize each clue represents a cliché.

Now they just need to figure out who is leaving the clues and why and follow the clues to find the killer.

There is also an old mystery solved in the pages of this book, one that has plagued Olivia for years. Will she find the answers she has been looking for? Will she be able to forgive others and move on with her life?

The author of this series is truly talented because these books are not just one story, but several stories tied together in the pages of each book. Not only does she have to write the main mystery for us to enjoy, she also must write all the stories that the Bayside Book Writers are writing, that they get together to critique each week. She has to write all this is such a way that we immerse ourselves in each and every story while following the clues to solve the actual Oyster Bay crimes. While I am sure this is a difficult process, by the time these books reach our hot little hands, it seems effortless, and we fall right in to all of them and escape into the pages of each book.

This book also picks up where the last one leaves off as the friendships of the characters continue naturally and Olivia continues to help those in need. One thing I love about the books by Ellery Adams is that she can write a well multifaceted books that are so more than wonderful mysteries, they are relate-able stories of the lives of the people of Oyster Bay. We, the readers, are taken to the seaside town and become part of their stories. Her way with words, her vivid descriptions, the character's conversations, make us feel right at home as we take a mini vacation to this beautiful seaside town. I can't wait to set off on the next trip when the next book in this series hits the shelves. Thank you Ellery for a great "escape" into another wonderful book.
