Book Description

January 1, 2007
Every year two million people are accidentally poisoned by something they encounter in or around the house, and more than half of them are children. While most parents know to keep medicines, cleansers, and anti-freeze safely locked away, many are not aware of other potential hazards, like freshly cut azaleas, daffodil bulbs, or the takeout Chinese food left sitting on the counter. Deadly Daffodils, Toxic Caterpillars is the first consumer guide to identifying household poisons, as well as preventing and treating accidental poisoning.

More than 150 common and uncommon substances are identified—from medications to mushrooms, morning glories to daylilies, leftovers to alcohol, caterpillars to spiders. This easy-access guide offers all the information you need to keep your family safe from hazards, and explains clearly how to take effective action should an accident occur. It even includes a section on safety for household pets.

The first ever single-volume, all-inclusive book on poisons written for family use, Deadly Daffodils, Toxic Caterpillars belongs in every home. This important—and potentially lifesaving —book should be required reading for parents, school nurses, teachers, and administrators, as well as camp counselors, babysitters, and other child-care workers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Suggestions to Read Before a Toxic Emergency+, April 30, 2008
By
This review is from: Deadly Daffodils, Toxic Caterpillars: The Family Guide to Preventing and Treating Accidental Poisoning Inside and Outside the Home (Paperback)
This book is a medical emergency feather-weight.I would not recommend thumbing your way through it,in the event of a real situation.I would say you should read through it beforehand, and familiarize yourself with some of the tragic scenerios.Eighty percent of the first actions for aid is to call the Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222).Well,that seems like common-sense.It basically gives minor first aid suggestions before getting real assistance from medical professionals. The knowledge is of value for novices and technicians alike. How to handle accidental medication and herbal overdoses. How to handle toxic plants, shrubs, trees, and mushrooms.Recognising toxic snakes and poisoness toads. Avoiding dangerous stinging insects.Chemicals to avoid being tangible with.Microscopic water creatures around that should be avoided.Being wary of food poisoning,at home and in the market-place.Keeping your kids safe from poisons in the nursey and playroom.Setting safeguards for your curious pets. And a complete list of resources concerning poison prevention and response. This book is a good guide to read over and keep on hand.Yet,two problems with the book.Firstly, you should be familiar with any potential stressful emergency situations beforehand. And that may be impractical .And more first aid knowledge should be presented, beyond just contacting Poison Control for instructions.Luckily, your cell phone is commonplace thesedays and is of valuable assistance in itself.
