Golf Murder Mystery July 14, 2003
When a land developer is found floating face down in a water hazard on the golf course of an exclusive Long Island country club, local homicide detective Karl Kanopka is called in to investigate.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Breaznell's (The Star of Sutherland) undistinguished golf mystery, homicide detective Karl Kanopka investigates the murder of a detested real estate developer on the grounds of a fancy Long Island golf course. Kanopka's mechanical, by-the-numbers approach can't prevent further murders, which serve to narrow the already small field of suspects. Longings for his late wife slightly leaven the detective's cynical personality, but he loses the reader's sympathy as soon as he hops into the sack with the cliched attractive widow of the first victim. Despite numerous cheap shots at Agatha Christie, Breaznell fails to sustain character or plot, and his sleuth's solving the crime solely by being targeted by the killer doesn't entitle him to mock the traditions of the Golden Age.

From the Inside Flap

When a land developer is found floating face down in a water hazard on the golf course of an exclusive Long Island country club, local homicide detective Karl Kanopka is called in to investigate. He has little in common with the club's members except a love of golf and a fervent desire to play a round on the club's links.

One of the suspects is the nephew of famed British mystery writer Dame Winifred Randall. He inherited her estate and turned its Gothic mansion and grounds into the country club to try to save it from developers. Suspicion also falls on an arrogant doctor who is more upset about the course being closed than about the murder; a homeless caddy who believes he can beat Tiger Woods; the club's lothario golf pro; and its greenskeeper, a black-power advocate.

The witty, engaging detective and suspenseful plot will grip mystery buffs and the golf humor will appeal to golf lovers as Kanopka follows the clues and eventually solves the crime by taking a leaf from the methods of Dame Winifred's tweedy fictional detective, Peter H. Couloir, a character Kanopka previously mocked as being hopelessly outdated.

5.0 out of 5 stars A suspenseful murder mystery, December 11, 2003
This review is from: Deadly Divots: A Golf Murder Mystery (Hardcover)
Deadly Divots is a suspenseful murder mystery centered about the golf course of an exclusive Long Island country club. Touches of golf humor will appeal to fans of the sport, while conflicting motives and intrigues flavor the meat of the mystery itself. A fascinating whodunit with a twist, Deadly Divots documents Gene Breaznell as a first class author and a master of the mystery/suspense genre.

The ending is a bit of twist but overall an average read at best. If you are a golf fan looking for something different there are better books.
