This review is from: Deadly Effects: Wound Ballistics "What Bullets Do to Bodies" (DVD) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I first viewed this video on VHS tape approximately 20 years ago and the information provided in this film is just as relevant today as it was when it was first released in the late 80's. The truth is the truth no matter how you slice it and the fantastic amount of realistic and practical information provided in this film is simply timeless.

The host of this film is very engaging and you can tell that he knows what he is talking about and that he is very passionate about the subject. The other primary participant in this film is Colonel Martin Flacker, M.D., who is a combat medic and avid shooter who has dedicated a significant portion of his life and career to the study of what bullets do to the human body and what they don't do. His knowledge is priceless and his common sense approach to the subject are simple yet genius at the same time. The host expels a lot of the myths and untruths concerning the subjects of; "Stopping Power," "Shocking Power," and "Knockdown Power," which seems to be so prevalent even today with experienced shooters who should know that these terms are part of the old dogma that just doesn't stand up to the evidence presented and plain old common sense. Now this is probably going to cause quite the stir with some people and if that is you, then you really need to sit down and watch this video with an open mind because it may very well save your life one day.

This film is very informative and truly a pleasure to watch for the production quality and presentation of the material is top notch. My only complaint was that it ended far sooner than I would have liked. I should also caution you that there are some pretty graphic images presented throughout the course of this film in order to provide you with real-life examples of what bullets do to the human body. Personally, I would like to have seen a lot more with some actual autopsy footage included, but hey that's just me.

Here are the ultimate truths when it comes to determining the deadly effects of handgun bullets on human tissue in their order of importance.

1. Proper shot placement is EVERYTHING! No matter what you are shooting, if you don't hit the proper target, it isn't going to be as effective as if you do. Learn how to shoot and where to place your shots and you will be further ahead of the guy who carries a .454 Casul and can't hit the broad side of a barn, let alone a small target such as the brain or heart.

2. The bigger the hole the more damage that you cause to human tissue! The larger the diameter of the bullet, the larger the hole and the amount of damage caused as the bullet travels through human tissue, which brings up the next indisputable truth...

3. The farther a bullet penetrates through human tissue, the greater the damage! If a bullet goes through only 6 inches of human tissue, it will only cause damage for 6 inches and the diameter of the bullet, but if it goes through 12 inches of human tissue, it will obviously cause twice as much damage. Common sense!

4. The weight of the bullet is a far greater factor on penetration depth than the velocity of the bullet. Slower heavier bullets will penetrate farther through human tissue than lighter faster bullets (handgun bullets).

5. Temporary cavitation has little to no real factor on determining the effectiveness of handgun bullets on human tissue.

6. Multiple hits in the proper target area are more effective than a single hit in the proper target area.

So to sum it all up, you should always use the largest caliber bullet in the most reliable and mechanically sound firearm that you can safely and comfortably handle while consistently and accurately placing your shots in the proper target areas.

I strongly endorse and highly recommend that you purchase this DVD along with this book, Gunshot Wounds: Practical Aspects of Firearms, Ballistics, and Forensic Techniques, SECOND EDITION in order to further expand your knowledge concerning firearms, self-defense, and ballistics.
